Subject-Specific Head Model Generation by Mesh Morphing: A Personalization Framework and Its Applications.

Finite element (FE) head models have become powerful tools in many fields within neuroscience, especially for studying the biomechanics of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Subject-specific head models accounting for geometric variations among subjects are needed for more reliable predictions. However, the generation of such models suitable for studying TBIs remains a significant challenge and has been a bottleneck hindering personalized simulations. This study presents a personalization framework for generating subject-specific models across the lifespan and for pathological brains with significa

Effect of head and shoulder positioning on the cross-sectional area of the subclavian vein in obese subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Head and shoulder positioning may affect cross-sectional area (CSA) and location of the subclavian vein (SCV). We investigated the CSA of the SCV and the depth of the SCV, depending on the head and shoulder positions. METHODS: In 24 healthy obese volunteers, the short axis ultrasound images of the SCV and adjacent structures were obtained in three different head positions (neutral, 30° turned to the contralateral side, and 30° turned to the ipsilateral side) and two different shoulder positions (neutral and lowered). Images of the right and left SCVs were obtained in the supine and

Cortical blood flow during head-up postural change in subjects with orthostatic hypotension.

Regional cerebral blood flow was measured with the 133-Xenon inhalation method in seven healthy subjects with orthostatic hypotension not due to autonomic failure (i.e. non-neurogenic clinical disorder). Measurements were performed during supine rest and during head-up tilt (70 degrees). All subjects had a consistent drop in systolic blood pressure and the typical symptomatology of orthostatic hypotension. The results showed lower mean hemispheric blood flow during head-up tilt than during supine rest. In addition, a consistent and significant redistribution of the regional flow values was see

Release of vasopressin, cortisol and beta-endorphin in tetraplegic subjects in response to head-up tilt.

Plasma levels of beta-endorphin, vasopressin and cortisol during head-up tilt were measured in tetraplegic patients and in normal healthy subjects. In tetraplegic patients rapid tilt from the horizontal to 30 degrees or 60 degrees head-up induced orthostatic hypotension and increased plasma levels of cortisol, beta-endorphin and vasopressin. In control subjects head-up tilt failed to alter plasma levels of these hormones. These data show that the head-up position in tetraplegics causes various endocrine reactions.

Screening of [18F]Florbetazine for Aβ Plaques and a Head-to-Head Comparison Study with [11C]Pittsburgh Compound-B ([11C]PiB) in Human Subjects.

Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of amyloid-β (Aβ) has emerged as a crucial strategy for early diagnosis and monitoring of therapeutic advancements targeting Aβ. In our previous first-in-human study, we identified that [18F]Florbetazine ([18F]92), featuring a diaryl-azine scaffold, exhibits higher cortical uptake in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients compared to healthy controls (HC). Building upon these promising findings, this study aimed to characterize the diagnostic potential of [18F]92 and its dimethylamino-modified tracer [18F]91 and further compare them with the benchmark [11C

Characterizing Head Acceleration Events in Law Enforcement Cadets During Subject Control Technique Training.

Law enforcement cadets (LECs) complete weeks of subject control technique training. Similar sport-related combat training has been shown to expose participants to head acceleration events (HAEs) that have potential to result in short- and long-term impairments. The purpose of this study was to describe the number and magnitude of HAEs in LECs throughout their training. 37 LECs (7 females; age = 30.6 ± 8.8 years; BMI = 30.0 ± 6.0) were recruited from a law enforcement organization. Participants wore instrumented mouthguards, which recorded all HAEs exceeding a resultant 5 g threshold for traini

Evaluation of the ventilatory effects on human subjects in prolonged hip-flexed/head-down restraint position.

BACKGROUND: The restraint chair is a tool used by law enforcement and correction personnel to control aggressive, agitated individuals. When initiating its use, subjects are often placed in a hip-flexed/head-down (HFHD) position to remove handcuffs. Usually, this period of time is less than two minutes but can become more prolonged in particularly agitated patients. Some have proposed this positioning limits ventilation and can result in asphyxia. The aim of this study is to evaluate if a prolonged HFHD restraint position causes significant ventilatory compromise. METHODS: Subjects exercised

Simulative investigation on head injuries of electric self-balancing scooter riders subject to ground impact.

The safety performance of an electric self-balancing scooter (ESS) has recently become a main concern in preventing its further wide application as a major candidate for green transportation. Scooter riders may suffer severe brain injuries in possible vehicle crash accidents not only from contact with a windshield or bonnet but also from secondary contact with the ground. In this paper, virtual vehicle-ESS crash scenarios combined with finite element (FE) car models and multi-body scooter/human models are set up. Post-impact kinematic gestures of scooter riders under various contact conditions

Brain single photon emission computed tomography in anosmic subjects after closed head trauma.

Anosmia following head trauma is relatively common and in many cases is persistent and irreversible. The ability to objectively measure such a decline in smelling, for both clinical and medicolegal goals, is very important. The aim of this study was to find results of brain Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) in anosmic subjects after closed head trauma. This case-control cross sectional study was conducted in a tertiary referral University Hospital. The brain perfusion state of nineteen anosmic patients and thirteen normal controls was evaluated by means of the SPECT with 99mtc

The influence of the biomechanical parameters of the hip on the outcome of treatment of hips subject to avascular necrosis of the femoral head.

We were interested in whether or not the biomechanical status of the hip influences the course of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. To investigate this, we used a computer aided system based on a three dimensional mathematical model for determining the stress distribution in the hip joint from standard anteroposterior rentgenographs (X-ray images) of both hips and pelvis. Based on the results of our study, we suggest that the biomechanical parameters of the hip play an important role in the outcome of treatment of hips affected by avascular necrosis of the femoral head.

Dynamics of circulatory adjustments to head-up tilt and tilt-back in healthy and sympathetically denervated subjects.

1. The initial circulatory adjustments induced by head-up tilt and tilt-back were investigated in six healthy subject (aged 30-58 years) and six patients with orthostatic hypotension due to pure autonomic failure (aged 33-65 years). 2. Continuous responses of finger arterial pressure and heart rate were recorded by Finapres. A pulse contour algorithm applied to the arterial pressure waveform was used to compute stroke volume responses. 3. In the healthy subjects, head-up tilt induced gradual circulatory adjustments. After 1 min upright stroke volume and cardiac output had decreased by 39 +/- 9

Cardiac output variations in supine resting subjects during head-out cold water immersion.

Five men, aged 31.2 years (SD 2.3), under semi-nude conditions and resting in a dorsal reclining position, were exposed to thermoneutral air for 30 min, followed immediately by a cold water (15 degrees C) immersion for 60 min. Cardiac output was measured using a dual-beam Doppler flow meter. During immersion in cold water, cardiac frequency (fc) showed an initial bradycardia. The lowest values were reached at about 10 min after immersion, 58.3 (SD 2.5) to 48.3 (SD 7.8) beats min-1 (P < 0.05). By the 20th min of exposure, fc had gradually risen to 70.0 beats min-1 (SD 6.6, P < 0.05). This chang

Subjective cognitive complaints and decline among aging individuals with prior repetitive head impact exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) can precede Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. SCC in the absence of objective impairment is termed subjective cognitive decline (SCD). This study aimed to characterize SCC and SCD among a sample of aging individuals with and without prior repetitive head impact (RHI) exposure, the former of whom are at risk for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). METHODS: RHI-exposed (N = 167) and non-RHI-exposed (N = 317) Boston University Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) participants and their informants completed subjective measures

Differences in the Movement of the Glenoid Over the Humeral Head Between Subject-Specific and Generalized Glenohumeral Motion.

Hill-Sachs lesion engagement, which is used for clinical decision-making in shoulder instability, is typically based on a static assessment, but would ideally be dynamically evaluated. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences between subject-specific and generalized glenohumeral motion. For five arm movements (forward elevation, scapula abduction, coronal abduction, external rotation at 90° abduction and external rotation at rest) of 20 participants, the average rotation and translation of the scapula and humerus throughout the forward movement were calculated. Metrics (length, distan
