RATIONALE: Addiction theories posit that drug-related cues maintain and contribute to drug use and relapse. Indeed, our recent study in cocaine-dependent patients demonstrated that subliminally presented cocaine-related stimuli activate reward neurocircuitry without being consciously perceived. Activation of reward neurocircuitry may provoke craving and perhaps prime an individual for subsequent drug-seeking behaviors.
OBJECTIVES: Using an equivalent paradigm, we tested whether cannabis cues activate reward neurocircuitry in treatment-seeking, cannabis-dependent individuals and whether activa

This experiment compared the effects of exposure to masked phobic stimuli at a very brief stimulus-onset asynchrony on spider-phobic and non-phobic individuals. Participants were identified through a widely used questionnaire and a Behavioral Avoidance Test (BAT) with a live, caged tarantula to establish baseline levels of avoidance. One week later, they were individually administered one of two continuous series of masked images: spiders or flowers. Preliminary masking experiments showed that independent samples of participants from the same populations failed to recognize these stimuli. Part

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders are associated with neurobiological disruptions in subliminal and supraliminal emotion processing. There may be additional variation based on sex and the presence of self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs). Examining individuals in remission allows us to understand trait-like emotion processing characteristics that persist in the absence of symptoms. This study investigates neural processing in response to supraliminal and subliminal emotional stimuli based upon mood disorder diagnosis, sex, and SITBs.
METHODS: Seventy-five participants with a history of any m

Revenge-planning refers to individual differences in the tendency to actively seek out hostile confrontations with others. Building on past theory, we hypothesized that revenge-planning would be related to preattentive vigilance for angry facial expressions. By being vigilant for such expressions, individuals could more readily notice and prepare to confront social challenges. We conducted 2 studies to test this prediction. Across studies, results indicated that participants high in revenge-planning had significantly longer color-naming latencies for masked angry expressions presented in a sub

In a proposed rat model for anxiety (electrical stimulation of the periaqueductal grey region), progabide (a GABA agonist) and diazepam both increased the latency to escape to a safe compartment and also the current needed to induce the escape response (escape threshold). Furthermore, the effects of progabide and diazepam were greater than additive in their actions on the escape response as when given together in normally subliminal doses, the combination exerted a marked anti-aversive effect. These actions of the drugs alone or in combination could not be explained by non-specific motor effec

Thirty-two agoraphobic patients were randomly allocated to four groups and treated by repeated exposure to cine-films at twice weekly intervals for three weeks. Three of the groups saw the same cine-film, comprising a range of agoraphobic scenes, and a control group saw a potter working on his wheel. The three groups seeing the phobic cine-film included one who viewed it at an illumination level below the visual threshold (subliminal group), one seeing it under normal conditions (supraliminal group) and one which underwent graduated exposure from subliminal to supraliminal viewing levels as th

Fifteen agoraphobics took part in a study to investigate their responses to repeated presentations of a phobic motion pciture. Five patients were shown the film supraliminally, five were shown it subliminally, and the remaining five formed a control group. Subjective feelings were assessed with visual analogue scales, and three physiological measures, heart rate, skin conductance, and respiratory rate, were recorded. An earlier report showed that both subliminal and supraliminal presentation produced significant improvements in phobic fear and avoidance, and the present results show that the s

UNLABELLED: Tinnitus is a public health issue in France. Around 1 % of the population is affected and 30,000 people are handicapped in their daily life. The treatments available for disabling tinnitus have until now been disappointing. We report our experience on the treatment of these patients in neurosurgery.
PATIENT AND METHODS: Between 2006 and 2008, transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was performed following several supraliminal and subliminal protocols in 16 patients whose mean age was 47 years (range, 35-71). All patients underwent anatomical and functional MRI of the auditory cor

OBJECTIVE: Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) has been hypothesized to modulate γ-aminobutyric (GABA) transmission in the human brain. GABA in the motor cortex is highly correlated to measures of automatic motor inhibition that can be obtained in simple response priming paradigms. To test the effects of tVNS on GABA transmission, we measured tVNS-induced alterations in behavioral and electrophysiology during automatic motor inhibition.
METHODS: Participants were 16 young, healthy adults (8 female). We combined a subliminal response priming paradigm with tVNS and EEG measurement. In

Attentional bias toward addiction-related stimuli has been implicated in the development and maintenance of addiction disorders. Several previous studies have reported an attentional bias toward pornographic cues in individuals with problematic pornography use (PPU). Since attentional bias can occur without conscious awareness, the purpose of this study was to use electroencephalography to examine whether individuals with a high tendency for PPU exhibit attentional bias at the level of the preconscious processing. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while male participants with high

When people are presented with backward-masked images of fear-relevant stimuli and only some of these images are paired consistently with electric shocks, they can predict the occurrence of shocks even though they do not consciously know which images they have seen. We postulated that they may use the perception of visceral cues from the conditional fear response to facilitate the prediction of shocks. In this study, ability to detect heartbeats was used to index sensitivity to visceral cues. The results showed that subjects who could detect their heartbeats performed better than chance in pre

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation has become an established clinical option for treatment of refractory chronic pain and angina pectoris, but its precise mechanism of action is unclear. We investigated the effect of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) on heart rate variability (HRV) and evaluating its influence on the sympathetic/parasympathetic balance in chronic pain. MATERIALS AND PURPOSE: Seven patients (three men, four women) with SCS due to chronic pain were included. The SCS was programmed in three different ways: (i) to stimulate at an amplitude known to generate paresthesias (ON-state), (

Cerebral asymmetries for emotion processing are controversial, the right hemisphere being considered either superior in the recognition of all emotions, or superior in the recognition of negative emotions (together with the left-hemispheric superiority for positive emotions). In a number of previous studies, tDCS was applied on the left/right prefrontal cortex (PFC) in order to disentangle this issue, but the results remain controversial. We applied hf-tRNS/sham stimulation over the left/right PFC, during the presentation of neutral, angry and happy faces presented as broadband images (suprali

BACKGROUND: Neurocircuitry models of anxiety disorders suggest dysregulated mechanisms encompassing both automatic and elaborate threat processing. However, the extent to which these processes might be differentially modified by psychotherapy and the neural basis of such changes are unknown. We examined the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in patients with anxiety disorder on brain responses to subliminal and supraliminal threat.
METHODS: 3-Tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess neural responses to disorder-related stimuli, presented during two backward-ma

This monograph contains descriptions of the single fiber electromyography (SFEMG) method and of the more recently implemented method of recording jitter with concentric needle electrodes (CNEs). SFEMG records action potentials from single muscle fibers (SFAPs), which permits measuring fiber density (FD), a sensitive measure of reinnervation, and jitter, a sensitive measure of abnormal neuromuscular transmission (NMT). With voluntary activation, jitter is measured between two SFAPs with acceptable amplitude and rise time. With activation by axon stimulation, jitter is measured between the stimu

Research on D-cycloserine (DCS) has demonstrated a significant effect on symptom reduction in human studies that utilized conventional exposure-based approaches. Recent studies have offered promising results for targeting fears through subliminal paradigms. In this double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled study, 45 spider fearful individuals received DCS or placebo pills prior to completing a subliminal cue exposure task to images of spiders. Participants completed self-report questionnaires and a behavioral approach task to a live caged tarantula. After repeated exposure to subliminal spid

STUDY DESIGN: Flexion reflex study in motor complete human spinal cord injury (SCI).
OBJECTIVES: To examine changes in the magnitude of the flexion reflex following functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the rectus femoris (RF) muscle.
SETTING: Bioengineering Unit, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, UK.
METHODS: The flexion reflex was evoked by electrical stimulation of the sural nerve, and was recorded in the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle. RF muscle conditioning stimulation was performed at 0.7, 1, and 2 times motor threshold ( x MT) over a range of conditioning test interva

Emotional information is typically encountered in dynamic and context-rich environments, yet mood-congruent bias in major depressive disorder (MDD) has largely been studied using static stimuli. Subliminal emotional information modulations on behavioral and neural responses are investigated using a novel dynamic emotional video processing paradigm. In total, 126 participants (MDD: n = 60, Control: n = 66) completed an fMRI task in which happy or sad videos were presented while subliminal facial expressions (happy/sad; 16.7 msec) were flashed every second. Participants categorized video emotion

The latency of consecutive H-reflex responses of single human triceps surae motoneurones varies up to 2,500 μs. A large part of this variation was shown to occur at the synaptic transmission. A moderate increase in stimulus strength from the threshold value shortened the mean latency and reduced the latency variation, presumably as a result of spatial summation of excitatory inputs. Further increase to maximum strength lengthened the mean latency, increased the variation, and resulted in a dropping out of some responses which was not produced by collision by antidromic impulses. These effects
