Pleomorphic adenoma of submandibular gland: An uncommon occurrence.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common tumor of the benign salivary gland neoplasms, and the most common gland to be involved is the parotid gland. Its occurrence in the submandibular or the sublingual gland is uncommon. We present a case of a histologically proven PA involving the submandiblular gland.

Oncocytic carcinoma arising in the submandibular gland with disseminated bone metastases.

Oncocytic carcinoma of the head and neck is a very rare neoplasm. It usually occurs in the parotid glands. Only 11 cases of oncocytic carcinoma of the submandibular gland have been reported, and no cases have shown distant bone metastasis. A 67-year-old man presented with a tingling sensation in both hands due to a herniated cervical disc. A whole body bone scan and PET-CT showed disseminated bone metastases. Neck CT revealed a 1.7 cm calcified left submandibular mass. The submandibular gland and bone marrow biopsies were consistent with oncocytic carcinoma. Our case is the first report of onc

Salivary Gland Disorders: Rapid Evidence Review.

The major salivary glands are the paired parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Salivary gland disorders can affect the glandular tissue or its excretory system. The parotid glands are the largest and produce aqueous serous secretions that are less immunogenic. They are more susceptible to infections and neoplasms. The submandibular glands produce mucinous secretions that are high in calcium and phosphate salts through a long submandibular duct that flows against gravity. The submandibular glands are responsible for more than 80% of salivary stones. Sialadenitis can be acute or chronic

Safety and efficacy of transcervical resection of parapharyngeal space neoplasms.

There are several surgical approaches for resection of parapharyngeal space (PPS) neoplasms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate local disease control, facial nerve injury, and need for mandibulotomy associated with resection of PPS neoplasms via the transcervical approach with submandibular gland excision. A retrospective chart review of 33 patients who underwent resection of a PPS neoplasm between October 1991 and July 2000 was performed. Of the 33 patients, 3 patients developed local recurrence after a median follow-up of 24 months. None of the patients experienced facial nerve paresi

Gland-preserving surgery can effectively preserve gland function without increased recurrence in treatment of benign submandibular gland tumour.

The most widely accepted treatment for neoplasms of the submandibular gland usually involves excision of the entire gland. Our aim was to establish a gland-preserving operation for benign tumours of the submandibular gland and evaluate its efficacy. We treated 40 patients from January 2007 to December 2008 with benign submandibular gland tumours who were listed to have an operation that either preserved the gland or sacrificed it. Duration of operation, extent of injury to the nerve, postoperative function of the gland, aesthetic appearance, and recurrence were assessed. We found no significan

Anterior facial vein and submandibular gland together: predicting the histology of submandibular masses with CT or MR imaging.

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that the relationship of the anterior facial vein to the submandibular salivary gland and a mass in the submandibular fossa could help identify the origin of the mass at computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with 14 palpable submandibular masses, surgical and histologic confirmation, and contrast material-enhanced CT images (12 patients) or MR images (one patient) that showed the anterior facial vein were identified with review of files from 1985 to 1997. Six patients had submandibular gland diseas

Oncocytoma of the Submandibular Gland: Diagnosis and Treatment Based on Clinicopathology.

Background. Submandibular oncocytomas are rare benign salivary gland neoplasms. They are typically found in Caucasian patients aged 50-70 years with no gender preference. Due to the overlapping histological and clinical features of head and neck tumors, they are often misdiagnosed. Methods. We report a case of unilateral submandibular gland oncocytoma in a 63-year-old Caucasian man. Results. The patient underwent unilateral submandibular gland resection and histopathologic analysis of the tumor specimen. On follow-up at 2 weeks and 1 year, no recurrence was identified. Conclusion. Submandibula

[A submandibular swelling: the salivary gland?].

Four patients, three men aged 32, 51 and 74 years, respectively, and a woman aged 34 years, presented with a submandibular swelling. In all four patients, the swelling was caused by submandibular salivary-gland disease. The first patient appeared to have chronic sialoadenitis due to sialolithiasis, in the second patient the diagnosis was sialoadenosis due to anorexia-boulimia, the third patient had a pleomorphic adenoma and the fourth had a malignant neoplasm of the floor of the mouth causing obstruction of the submandibular gland. A submandibular swelling may have many different causes. It is

Submandibular salivary gland tumors: Clinical course and outcome of a 20-year multicenter study.

The purpose of this retrospective chart review study was to review the nature and clinical course of benign and malignant submandibular gland tumors at 2 major university-affiliated tertiary medical centers. All patients who underwent submandibular salivary gland excision between 1990 and 2010 were included. Clinical and disease-related data were collected from the medical charts. One hundred ninety-three patients were identified, of whom 108 (56%) had non-neoplastic disorders (sialolithiasis and sialadenitis). The remaining 85 patients (44%) had a submandibular salivary gland tumor. The most

Primary desmoplastic small round cell tumor of the submandibular gland: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a sporadic, highly malignant tumor with a poor prognosis. The abdomen and pelvis have been reported as the primary localization sites. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are few reports on primary DSRCT in the submandibular gland. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 26-year-old Chinese man with a mass in the right submandibular gland. Imaging studies showed a hypoechoic mass in the right submandibular region. Intraoperative pathology revealed that the tumor tissue was composed of small round tumor cells and a dense desm

Warthin tumor in an unusual site: a case report.

Warthin tumor (papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum, adenolymphoma) is a benign neoplasm from salivary glands and is almost restricted to the parotid gland and the periparotid lymph nodes. Its etiopathogenesis has been associated with tobacco smoke. Several authors believe that the tumor develops from heterotopic salivary gland tissues or through the attraction of a heavy lymphoid reaction. Most cases involve the lower pole or the tail of the parotid. Since its description, a few cases have been reported in other sites, like the submandibular salivary gland. This study aimed to describe a rare

Unusual salivary glands adenocarcinomas: a retrospective study.

Malignant tumors of the salivary gland ducts exhibit variable morphological patterns and biological behavior. This group of neoplasms includes some uncommon lesions that originate from the intercalated ducts, such as polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma, epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma and basal cell adenocarcinoma, and other that arise from the excretory duct, such as the salivary duct carcinoma. One hundred and seventy-seven malignant neoplasms of the major and minor salivary glands were reviewed. There were 23 cases of uncommon types of ductal carcinomas. Age, sex, location, size of tum

MRI findings of papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the submandibular gland.

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma is an extremely rare malignant tumor of the salivary glands. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of this lesion have not been reported in the literature. Herein, we present a case of papillary cystadenocarcinoma arising from the right submandibular gland. MRI showed a 5-cm mass composed of solid and cystic components in the mildly enlarged gland. Pathologic evaluation revealed papillary cystadenoca

Pediatric trans-oral submandibular gland excision: A safe and effective technique.

INTRODUCTION: In the pediatric population the submandibular gland requires removal in a number of conditions including, refractory recurrent sialoadenitis, sialolithiasis, salivary gland neoplasms and debilitating sialorrhea. In comparison to the traditional trans-cervical approach, the trans-oral route avoids a cervical scar, potential keloid formation and decreased risk of injury to the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. This approach also eliminates the potentiality of remnant duct disease since the entire duct and papillae are removed. The article demonstrates the appropriaten

Synchronous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of tongue and pleomorphic adenoma of submandibular gland.

Presentation with synchronous salivary gland tumors is rare, with the most typical combination being Warthin's tumor and pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland. Involvement of minor salivary glands in such occurrences is extremely uncommon. We report a case of simultaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tongue and pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland in a 40-year-old woman. The submandibular mass was initially considered to represent regional lymph node tumor metastasis but later was shown to be an intraglandular primary neoplasm.

Clear-cell myoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary glands: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural study of two cases involving the submandibular gland with review of the literature.

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MC) is an uncommon neoplasm of the salivary glands, and cases of the clear-cell (CC) variant are extremely rare. Two cases of MC of the CC variant arising in the left submandibular gland are described herein. Both cases, which involved elderly women, almost exclusively consisted of large glycogen-rich CCs. Both cases were immunopositive for several epithelial and myoepithelial markers, and electron microscopy (EM) demonstrated hybrid epithelial and myoid differentiation in both. Case 1 arose in a pre-existing pleomorphic adenoma ("ex mixed tumor MC"), while Case 2 was

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis of the submandibular and parotid glands: a report of a case and review of the literature.

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis (also known as Küttner tumor) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the salivary glands, first described by Küttner in 1896. Clinically, the disease cannot be distinguished from a true neoplasm. The submandibular gland is affected more commonly than any other salivary gland. This report is of a case of widespread swelling of the salivary glands in which histologic features of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis were seen in the submandibular and parotid glands. The etiology, pathogenesis, and differential diagnosis of this disease and the clinical outcome of this c
