Immunoreactive parathyroid hormone is present in subretinal fluids of the human eye.

(44-68) human Parathyroid hormone (hPTH) was studied in subretinal fluids (SRF) of 20 human eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. A (44-68) hPTH carboxyl mid-regional radioimmunoassay was used. Depending on the extent and the duration of the retinal detachments, (44-68) hPTH ranged between normal serum levels (ca. 100-300 pg/ml) up to excessive amounts of 4000 pg/ml with longstanding disease and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Aqueous humors (AH) of one patient with bilateral iridocyclitis and complicated cataract ranged at 90-132 pg/ml (44-68) hPTH, whereas a control population under

The effect of metabolic inhibitors on retinal adhesion and subretinal fluid resorption.

Retinal adhesion and the resorption of subretinal fluid were studied in Dutch rabbits, with two experimental techniques. In the first, small local detachments were made in vivo by injecting a small amount of fluid under the retina with a micropipette, and the time for resorption of the detachment was monitored. In the second, strips of eyecup were maintained in a physiologic bathing medium, and the force required to peel retina from the pigment epithelium was measured. Using these techniques, we have found that both the mechanisms for removing subretinal fluid and for maintaining retinal adhes

FACTORS PREDICTIVE OF PERSISTENT SUBRETINAL FLUID IN ACUTE CENTRAL SEROUS CHORIORETINOPATHY.

PURPOSE: To identify the clinical parameters predictive of persistent subretinal fluid in acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). METHODS: Clinical data of consecutive eyes diagnosed with first-time, acute, treatment-naïve CSC followed up for at least 6 months from symptom onset were evaluated retrospectively. Acute CSC was defined as CSC in which symptoms were noticed within 3 months of presentation. Subretinal fluid, central retinal thickness, subfoveal choroidal thickness, and fundus autofluorescence were examined. RESULTS: Of the 48 eyes in 48 patients, 38% exhibited subretinal flu

Evolution of septated cavitary subretinal fluid after treatment of choroidal metastasis.

An 83-year-old man presented with a 10-day history of decreased vision in the left eye. He was found to have choroidal metastases from lung adenocarcinoma that exhibited unilateral septated cavitary subretinal fluid on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). This fluid evolved into atypical lamellar sheets after treatment with systemic chemotherapy and orbital radiation prior to resolution. This is the first description demonstrating cavitary subretinal fluid pockets on spectral-domain OCT from lung cancer; attention is given to its unusual course and proposed pathogenesis.

Microsurgical technique for drainage of subretinal fluid with the aid of a sclerotomy retractor.

In order to open the scleral incision during the whole length of microsurgical drainage of the subretinal fluid, a simple retractor was designed which allows the edges of the sclerotomy wound to spread out without the additional help of the surgeon's or assistant's hands. By elevating the instrument, traction release of subretinal fluid is also possible, even in areas far behind the equator.

Drainage of the subretinal fluid and injection of saline solution into the vitreous body.

In a group of 250 cases operated upon for retinal detachment, drainage of the subretinal fluid was carried out in 96%. Since in 54 cases, i.e. 22%, a large quantity of subretinal fluid was evacuated, saline solution was injected into the vitreous. The following complications due to drainage were noted: intraocular haemorrhages (16%), incarceration of the retina (1%) and temporary iridocyclitis (2%). None of these complications prevented reattachment. In 54 cases in which injection of saline solution into the vitreous was carried out, we have noted: temporary occlusion of the central retinal ar

Subretinal fluid correlates with increased macular volume in diabetic macular edema.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and clinical phenotype of subretinal fluid (SRF) in eyes with diabetic macular edema (DME). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in treatment-naive patients with DME. The presence of SRF, hard exudates, and cystoid spaces with hyperreflective material (HRM) on OCT B-scans, along with central macular thickness (CMT) in the 1-mm, 3-mm, and 6-mm central areas, were assessed, and the correlation between the presence of SRF and macular thickness was estimated using linear mixed-effects models. RESULTS: Of 101 eyes from 63 patients (49% me

Persistent subretinal fluid in neovascular AMD: clinical significance and implications for treatment.

INTRODUCTION: In neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), complete resolution of retinal fluid has traditionally been regarded as the hallmark of successful treatment, yet accumulating evidence suggests that residual subretinal fluid (SRF) may not be uniformly harmful. In this report, the cumulative evidence supporting and qualifying an 'SRF-tolerating' treatment approach is summarized. AREAS COVERED: Relevant articles were identified through a search of the PubMed/MEDLINE database until April 2026, using terms including 'subretinal fluid,' 'intraretinal fluid,' 'neovascular AMD,'

MicroRNA Expression in Subretinal Fluid in Eyes Affected by Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment.

Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is an abnormal intraocular scarring process that can complicate cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). Although previous studies have examined the relevance of microRNAs (miRNAs) in ophthalmic diseases, only a few studies have evaluated the expression profiles of microRNAs in subretinal fluid. We hypothesized that the expression profiles of specific miRNAs may change in response to RRD, in the subretinal fluid that is directly in contact with photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). We looked for a potential correlation between t

Photoreceptor morphology and correlation with subretinal fluid chronicity associated with choroidal nevus.

BACKGROUND: Subretinal fluid (SRF) can be associated with choroidal nevus and can cause progressive change in the morphology of overlying photoreceptors. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was performed using optical coherence tomography to assess nevus and SRF features, as well as photoreceptor morphology over time. RESULTS: There were 232 choroidal nevi that presented with or developed SRF. Photoreceptor morphology at presentation was classified as normal (n=60, 26%), shaggy (elongated) (n=73, 31%), retracted (stalactite appearance) (n=76, 33%), or absent (n=23, 10%). There was a

Serous business: Delineating the broad spectrum of diseases with subretinal fluid in the macula.

A wide range of ocular diseases can present with serous subretinal fluid in the macula and therefore clinically mimic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). In this manuscript, we categorise the diseases and conditions that are part of the differential diagnosis into 12 main pathogenic subgroups: neovascular diseases, vitelliform lesions, inflammatory diseases, ocular tumours, haematological malignancies, paraneoplastic syndromes, genetic diseases, ocular developmental anomalies, medication-related conditions and toxicity-related diseases, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and tractional reti

The effects of external subretinal fluid drainage on secondary glaucoma in Coats' disease.

PURPOSE: We sought to investigate the effect of external subretinal fluid drainage (SRFD) on secondary or impending secondary glaucoma caused by bullous exudative retinal detachment for saving eyes with Coats' disease. METHODS: By retrospective chart review, we collected the treatment results of 56 patients younger than 15 years of age with Coats' disease. External SRFD was performed when exudative retinal detachment became bullous enough to cause anterior displacement of the lens-iris diaphragm or when secondary angle-closure glaucoma occurred. Treatment results were regarded as successful w
