Co-Occurrence of Substance-Related and Other Mental Health Disorders Among Adolescent Cannabis Users.

OBJECTIVE: Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit substance in the United States and is increasingly being legalized throughout the United States. Many believe that cannabis is relatively harmless, and some believe that cannabis is not addictive. We wondered what the rates of cannabis abuse and dependence might be among adolescents referred for substance use evaluations and also about the incidence of co-occurring psychiatric illnesses and substance use disorders among those individuals. METHODS: Herein, we analyze intake data from 483 adolescents referred for evaluation at an adolescent

The relevance of personality traits in impulsivity-related disorders: From substance use disorders and gambling disorder to bulimia nervosa.

Background and aims The main aim of this study was to analyze and describe the clinical characteristics and shared personality traits in different impulsivity-compulsivity spectrum disorders: substance use disorders (SUD), gambling disorder (GD), and bulimia nervosa (BN). The specific aims were to compare personality differences among individuals with pure SUD, BN with and without SUD, and GD with and without SUD. In addition, we assessed the differential predictive capacity of clinical and personality variables in relation to diagnostic subtype. Methods The sample comprised 998 subjects diagn

DSM-5 reviewed from different angles: goal attainment, rationality, use of evidence, consequences—part 2: bipolar disorders, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, personality disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, neurocognitive disorders.

Part 1 of this paper discussed several more general aspects of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and offered a detailed, paradigmatic analysis of changes made to the chapter on depressive disorders. This second part focusses on several other disorders, including bipolar and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The respective changes and their possible consequences are discussed under consideration of traditional psychiatric classification, particularly from the perspective of European traditions and on the basis of a PubMed search and review papers. Transgender-related discrimination and substance use, substance use disorder diagnosis and treatment history among transgender adults.

BACKGROUND: Substantial research gaps exist regarding the relationship between transgender-related discrimination and substance use outcomes for transgender adults, with few studies accounting for other experiences of victimization. METHODS: Transgender adults (N = 600) from Massachusetts and Rhode Island completed a survey online or in-person. Multivariable linear and logistic regression models examined the association between lifetime experiences of transgender-related discrimination using the validated 11-item Everyday Discrimination Scale (theoretical range = 0-44) and substance use outco

Reactive and Regulative Temperament in Relation to Clinical Symptomatology and Personality Disorders in Patients with a Substance Use Disorder.

Temperament and personality traits are important factors underlying the vulnerability for both the initiation and continuation of addictive behaviors. We investigated the influence of reactive and regulative temperament and their interaction in relation to clinical symptomatology and personality disorders (PDs) in a sample of 841 inpatients (68.1% males) with a substance use disorder (SUD). To assess reactive temperament we used the Behavioral Inhibition and Behavioral Activation Scales (BISBAS) and to assess regulative temperament we used the Effortful Control Scale. Clinical symptomatology a

Emergency department use trajectories over a 10-year period among patients with substance-related disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Overutilization of the emergency department (ED) is costly and often reflects unmet needs and suboptimal care, raising concerns when patients rely on the ED persistently over many years. Long-term ED use trajectories for patients with substance-related disorders (SRDs) have never been investigated. This study aimed to identify ED use trajectories over a 10-year period and examine associations with patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, quality-of-care indicators, and subsequent adverse outcomes. METHODS: A cohort of 9642 patients with long-standing SRDs was exami

Correlates of Perceived Discrimination Related to Substance Use Disorders Among Patients in Methadone Maintenance Treatment.

This study sought to examine demographic, treatment-related, and diagnosis-related correlates of substance use disorder (SUD)-related perceived discrimination among patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). Participants were 164 patients at nonprofit, low-barrier-to-treatment-access MMT programs. Participants completed measures of demographics, diagnosis-related characteristics (Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18) and Depressive Experiences Questionnaire (DEQ)), and treatment-related characteristics. Perceived discrimination was measured on a seven-point Likert-type scale ranging

Patient-control association study of substance P-related genes in unipolar and bipolar affective disorders.

In the search of genes potentially implicated in the aetiology of affective disorders (AD), SUBSTANCE P (SP) pathway is receiving increased interest. SP receptor antagonists, such as MK-869 and L-759274, have been shown to have antidepressant effect. Results from preclinical and human studies implicate SP and its pathway in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. We investigated a possible association between 20 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPS) among four SP-related genes and unipolar and bipolar ad (UPAD and BPAD) in a first sample of 92 UPAD patients and 92 control individuals and in a

First episode schizophrenia-related psychosis and substance use disorders: acute response to olanzapine and haloperidol.

BACKGROUND: Co-occurring substance use disorders, mostly involving alcohol, cannabis or cocaine, occur commonly in patients with schizophrenia and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Available but limited data suggest that substance use disorders (especially cannabis use disorders) may also be common in first-episode patients and appear linked to a poor outcome in these patients. Strategies to curtail substance use form an important dimension of the treatment program for both first-episode and chronic patients. We report on rates of co-occurring substance use disorders in pa

Individualized approach to primary prevention of substance use disorder: age-related risks.

BACKGROUND: The misuse of legal and illegal substances has led to an increase in substance use disorder (SUD) in the United States. Although primary prevention strategies have been successfully used to target chronic physical diseases, these strategies have been less effective with SUD, given misconceptions of SUD, shortages in behavioral health professionals, and the population-based focus on specific substances. A developmental approach to the identification and primary prevention of SUD that does not fully rely upon behavioral health workers is needed. The purpose of this paper was to exami

Substance use-related factors and psychosocial characteristics among Turkish adults with early- and late-onset substance use disorder.

The onset of substance use is a strong predictor of substance use disorders and related problems. This study examined the differences between early- and late-onset substance use in personality and substance use characteristics, traumatic experiences, and social support with a sample of 100 Turkish adults with substance use disorders. Early onset (<18 years) was associated with more traumatic experiences, increased risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and higher levels of depressive symptoms compared to late onset (≥18 years). Also, depressive symptoms, living, and working s

Risks and mitigations of substance use disorders with dental procedures-related opioid prescriptions: A systematic review.

Dental opioid prescriptions remain one of the most common initial exposures to opioids worldwide. Although opioid prescribing in dentistry has declined, even limited exposure to opioids may be a significant risk factor for developing Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), particularly in younger populations. This review evaluates the existing literature on dental opioid prescriptions and the development of OUD, identifies procedural and patient-related risk factors, and assesses the effectiveness of existing intervention strategies. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was co

An International, Multidisciplinary Consensus Set of Patient-Centered Outcome Measures for Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders.

Background: In 1990, the United States' Institute of Medicine promoted the principles of outcomes monitoring in the alcohol and other drugs treatment field to improve the evidence synthesis and quality of research. While various national outcome measures have been developed and employed, no global consensus on standard measurement has been agreed for addiction. It is thus timely to build an international consensus. Convened by the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), an international, multi-disciplinary working group reviewed the existing literature and reached con

Somatic symptom and related disorders in pediatric patients: Associations with parent psychiatric and substance use histories.

Parental response to pediatric patients with somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs) can impact symptom presentation. However, little is known about the impact of parent psychiatric and substance use disorder (SUD) history on the functional status and medical healthcare utilization of patients with SSRDs. The current study explored the associations between parent psychiatric & SUD history and patient somatic symptoms, functional disability, and hospital course in a medically hospitalized sample of pediatric patients with SSRDs. The electronic medical records of 375 pediatric patients wit

[DSM-5--what has changed in therapy for and research on substance-related and addictive disorders?].

The new edition of the DSM, which was published in May of 2013, has brought the following changes in the now called category "substance-related and addictive disorders". The terms dependency and misuse or abuse will be replaced by the terminus "substance use disorder". There is a moderate substance use disorder, if two or three criterias are fulfilled for a period of 12 months. To speak of a severe substance use disorder, it has to be four or more criteria for the duration of 12 months. Furthermore, pathological gambling will be a part of the DSM-5 as a non-substance use disorder, but rather a
