Development of a framework for action to advocate for a coherent prevention policy for tobacco, alcohol, and foods high in fats, salt, or sugar: a mixed-methods approach.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco, alcohol, and foods high in fats, salt, or sugar (HFSS) are health harming products. Limited progress in prevention is partly due to health-harming industry lobbying. Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), Alcohol Health Alliance, and Obesity Health Alliance collaborated with the aim of developing a framework for action to address the saturation of these products in our environment. METHODS: We used a mixed-methods approach. Focus groups with academic experts, local government, and national government, recruited through snowball sampling were held in Nov 3, 2022 (14 participa

Sugar reduction and associated biochemical changes in pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit juice during non-alcoholic fermentation by Kluyveromyces marxianus.

The reduction of high fructose and glucose content without affecting other important biochemicals is a challenge for healthier pomegranate juice, which was attempted using non-alcoholic fermentation by Kluyveromyces marxianus (isolated from kefir grains). For optimization of sugar reduction, static fermentation was undertaken with varying temperature (20 to 37C), pH (3.5, 4.0), and duration (up to 21 days). The reduction of fructose, glucose and formation of ethanol was measured periodically using HPLC for 21 days. The maximum sugar reduction by 34% (glucose 42% and fructose 18%) without ethan

An innovative method for simultaneous separation and determination of monosaccharide and sugar alcohol isomers associated with glycometabolism in beagle plasma using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Tracking changes in plasma concentrations of monosaccharides and sugar alcohols related to glycometabolism, which plays a role as the main source of energy, is of great significance for the treatment of metabolic diseases. However, analysis of monosaccharides and sugar alcohols has always been a difficult task due to the high polarity of the polyhydroxy structure and the presence of a large number of isomers. So far, no suitable method has been developed for simultaneous determination of monosaccharides and sugar alcohols in beagle plasma. RESULTS: This work performed an innovativ

Causal Relationship Between 38 Dietary Factors, Including Sugar and Alcohol Intakes, and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Study.

PURPOSE: Emerging evidence suggests that diets high in sugar consumption may be implicated in the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but the causal nature of these associations remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the potential causal links between 38 specific dietary factors (including alcohol and added sugar), particularly sugar-sweetened beverage intake, and the risk of PCOS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach was employed using genome-wide association study summary statistics. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method served as

Stereotypical diagnostic bias for alcohol-induced ketoacidosis could lead to death: Normal blood sugar levels in SGLT2 blocker-induced severe diabetic ketoacidosis.

BACKGROUND: Ketoacidosis, a life-threatening disease, can be caused by diabetes, alcohol consumption, and severe malnutrition, which are not uncommon in psychiatry. Diabetic and alcoholic ketoacidosis (AKA) are particularly frequent, and differentiating between these two is essential in terms of the substantially different treatment interventions. In recent years, the advent of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors has made this distinction more difficult, mainly due to the increase in euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (euDKA)-ketoacidosis in normal or near-normal blood sugar level

Sweeteners: erythritol, xylitol and cardiovascular risk-friend or foe?

Hyperglycaemia harms vascular health and promotes platelet aggregation. Reducing glucose concentration is crucial, and sugar alcohols may aid this effort. Used for over 50 years in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries, erythritol and xylitol minimally affect plasma glucose and insulin levels while promoting the release of beneficial gastrointestinal hormones such as e.g. glucagon-like peptide-1. These properties make them particularly appealing for individuals with diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Recent pilot trials suggest that xylitol and erythritol might temporarily alte

Glucosamine Improves Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Induced by High-Fat and High-Sugar Diet through Regulating Intestinal Barrier Function, Liver Inflammation, and Lipid Metabolism.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a liver disease syndrome. The prevalence of NAFLD has continued to increase globally, and NAFLD has become a worldwide public health problem. Glucosamine (GLC) is an amino monosaccharide derivative of glucose. GLC has been proven to not only be effective in anti-inflammation applications, but also to modulate the gut microbiota effectively. Therefore, in this study, the therapeutic effect of GLC in the NAFLD context and the mechanisms underlying these effects were explored. Specifically, an NAFLD model was established by feeding mice a high-fat and

Progression of non-alcoholic steatosis to steatohepatitis and fibrosis parallels cumulative accumulation of danger signals that promote inflammation and liver tumors in a high fat-cholesterol-sugar diet model in mice.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming a pandemic. While multiple 'hits' have been reported to contribute to NAFLD progression to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis and liver cancer, understanding the natural history of the specific molecular signals leading to hepatocyte damage, inflammation and fibrosis, is hampered by the lack of suitable animal models that reproduce disease progression in humans. The purpose of this study was first, to develop a mouse model that closely mimics progressive NAFLD covering the spectrum of immune, metabolic and histopatho

Added sugar intake and its forms and sources in relation to risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: results from the Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health cohort study.

It has been suggested that added sugar intake is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, previous studies only focused on sugar-sweetened beverages; the evidence for associations with total added sugars and their sources is scarce. This study aimed to examine the associations of total added sugars, their physical forms (liquid v. solid) and food sources with risk of NAFLD among adults in Tianjin, China. We used data from 15 538 participants, free of NAFLD, other liver diseases, CVD, cancer or diabetes at baseline (2013-2018 years). Added sugar intake was estimated f

Cuban Sugar Cane Wax Alcohol Exhibited Enhanced Antioxidant, Anti-Glycation and Anti-Inflammatory Activity in Reconstituted High-Density Lipoprotein (rHDL) with Improved Structural and Functional Correlations: Comparison of Various Policosanols.

Policosanols from various sources, such as sugar cane, rice bran, and insects, have been marketed to prevent dyslipidemia, diabetes, and hypertension by increasing the blood high-density lipoproteins cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. On the other hand, there has been no study on how each policosanol influences the quality of HDL particles and their functionality. Reconstituted high-density lipoproteins (rHDLs) with apolipoprotein (apo) A-I and each policosanol were synthesized using the sodium cholate dialysis method to compare the policosanols in lipoprotein metabolism. Each rHDL was compared regar

Maternal Serum Polyols and Its Link to Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Population-Based Nested Case-Control Study.

CONTEXT: Sugar alcohols (also called polyols) are regarded as a "Работает" sugar substitute. One of the possible reasons for their safe use in pregnant women is their natural origin and the presence of polyols in maternal and fetal samples during normal human gestation. But little is known about the association between circulating sugar alcohols levels and maternal metabolic disorders during pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to detect the concentration of the polyols in participants with and without gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and to investigate the association between maternal serum lev

Lack of effect of sugar cane policosanol on plasma cholesterol in Golden Syrian hamsters.

Policosanol is a mixture of higher aliphatic alcohols shown to have beneficial effects on plasma lipid levels in animals and humans. Over 50 studies have reported significant reductions in plasma cholesterol using policosanol obtained from Cuban sugar cane (Dalmer, La Havana, Cuba). However, other research groups using policosanol from alternative sources have failed to reproduce the efficacy of these alcohols observed in earlier studies. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to compare the cholesterol-lowering effect of the Dalmer sugar cane policosanol (SCP) product versus an alt

Sugar metabolism in the crystalline lens.

Research on the sugar metabolism of the crystalline lens, past and preent, is reviewed. The chief energy source in the lens is the Embden-Meyerhof pathway; respiration and oxidative phosphorylation become more important as the lens ages. The function of the alpha-glycerophosphate cycle is not fully understood. The mechanisms involved in cataract formation, including those of hypoglycemic cataract and osmotic cataracts, are discussed. Sugar cataracts can be delayed or prevented with such aldose reductase inhibitors as flavonoids. By inhibiting aldose reductase, the formation and accumulation of
