Forty-two patients with active paracoccidioidomycosis were randomized to receive itraconazole (50-100 mg d(-1)), ketoconazole (200-400 mg d(-1)) or sulfadiazine (100-150 mg kg d(-1) up to 6 g d(-1)) for 4-6 months, followed by slow release sulfa until negativity of serological tests. Administration of trimethoprim-sulfadiazine in a dog was associated with vomiting, inappetence, and icterus, and high values of alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, and total bilirubin concentration. The clinical signs and biochemical abnormalities resolved after discontinuation of the treatment. Histologic examination of sections from a liver biopsy specimen revealed moderate, predominantly portal hepatitis with cholestasis.

A diagnosis of trimethoprim/sulfadiazine-induced, immune-mediated thrombocytopenia in a dog was made, using a novel in vitro assay for thrombolytic activity. The assay quantifies thrombolytic activity by measuring the amount of platelet fragments in normal canine platelets before and after incubation with plasma from the thrombocytopenic dog. Silver sulfadiazine cream is a topical antibacterial agent that combines the antibacterial effects of both silver and sulfadiazine. Its reported cutaneous side effects include hypersensitivity reactions, allergic contact dermatitis, erythema multiforme, and systemic argyria. We report the case of a patient who had localized argyria develop in a scar after the use of silver sulfadiazine cream. In this case, the silver sulfadiazine cream was applied to and argyria developed within a postsurgical wound and area of severe contact dermatitis.

Zinc sulfadiazine (ZnSD) 50, 100, 200 mg/kg ig inhibited the formation of gastric ulcer induced by indomethacin, stress and pyloric ligation in rats respectively and showed dose-dependently.
