Low-pH sulfate reduction in acid mine drainage treatment systems: implications for acidophilic and acid-tolerant sulfate-reducing bacteria - a systematic review.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is characterized by persistent acidity, high sulfate and dissolved metal concentrations. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are attractive candidates for AMD remediation because dissimilatory sulfate reduction generates alkalinity while producing sulfide that can facilitate metal removal through precipitation. Extending these processes to acidic conditions has increased interest in acidophilic and acid-tolerant SRB (aSRB and atSRB), yet evidence from cultivation, molecular surveys and treatment systems has often been interpreted separately. This systematic review synthesi

Study on the changes and transformation characteristics of intermediate liquid products in hydrogen sulfide production from lignite degraded by sulfate-reducing bacteria.

The changes and transformation laws of intermediate liquid-phase products during the anaerobic degradation of lignite by sulfate-reducing bacteria in the formation of hydrogen sulfide play an important role in supplementing and improving the existing theories on the genesis of hydrogen sulfide gas in coal mines. In this paper, H2S gas and key intermediate liquid-phase products produced during the anaerobic degradation of lignite by sulfate-reducing bacteria were detected and analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that the process of hydrogen

Enhancement of Cr(VI) reduction by indigenous bacterial consortia using natural pyrite: A detailed study to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the highly efficient and possible sustainable system.

Pyrite was applied to Cr(VI) bioremediation as an inorganic electron donor due to the ability to provide electrons, while the role of pyrite in Cr(VI) bioremediation where organics as electron donors remains unknown. Herein a pyrite-based Cr(VI) bioreduction process in the sediment system containing lactate was demonstrated to be effective to detoxify Cr(VI): over 2200 mg L-1 Cr(VI) was continuously removed within 210 h with high reactivity (10.5 mg/(L·h)) all along. High-throughput 16S rDNA gene sequencing indicated that the pyrite could shape a functioning community that electrochemically ac

Phosphorus deficiency and kinetics of alkaline phosphatase in isolates and natural populations of phototrophic sulphur bacteria.

Phosphorus deficiency was analysed in the oxic-anoxic gradient of the karstic sulphurous lakes Vilar and Sisó during the stratification period. The distribution of planktonic photosynthetic populations along a vertical gradient coincided with an increase in alkaline phosphatase activity (APA). A multiple stepwise correlation analysis of data yielded a positive correlation of APA with planktonic phototrophic populations. MUF-P hydrolysis saturation curves were used to estimate the enzyme kinetics. High-affinity phosphatases (i.e. low K(M) saturation constant) coincided with the oxic-anoxic grad

Modeling of heavy nitrate corrosion in anaerobe aquifer injection water biofilm: a case study in a flow rig.

Heavy carbon steel corrosion developed during nitrate mitigation of a flow rig connected to a water injection pipeline flowing anaerobe saline aquifer water. Genera-specific QPCR primers quantified 74% of the microbial biofilm community, and further 87% of the community of the nonamended parallel rig. The nonamended biofilm hosted 6.3 × 10(6) SRB cells/cm(2) and the S(35)-sulfate-reduction rate was 1.1 μmol SO4(2-)/cm(2)/day, being congruent with the estimated SRB biomass formation and the sulfate areal flux. Nitrate amendment caused an 18-fold smaller SRB population, but up to 44 times higher

Importance of dissolved neutral mercury sulfides for methyl mercury production in contaminated sediments.

Biotic transformation of inorganic mercury, Hg(II), to mono methyl mercury (MeHg) is proposed to be largely controlled by passive uptake of neutral Hg complexes by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). In this study, the chemical speciation of Hg(II) in seven locally contaminated sediments covering environments such as (i) brackish water, (ii) low-productivity freshwater, and, (iii) high-productivity freshwater was related to potential Hg methylation rates, determined by incubation at 23 degrees C for 48 h under N2(g), and to total MeHg concentrations in sediments. Pore water speciation was modeled

Coupling of sulfate reduction and dissolved organic carbon degradation accelerated by microplastics in blue carbon ecosystems.

Microplastics have increasingly accumulated in sulfate- and organic matter-rich mangrove ecosystems, yet their effects on microbially mediated carbon and sulfur cycling in sediments remains poorly understood. In this study, we performed a 70-day anaerobic microcosm experiment to examine the effects of polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics with different sizes on sulfate reduction and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) degradation in mangrove sediments. Our results demonstrated that millimeter-scale PLA (mm-PLA) more effectively enhanced sulfate reduction, sulfur isotope fractionation, reduced sulfid

Abatement of volatile organic sulfur compounds in odorous emissions from the bio-industry.

Compounds of interest in this work are methanethiol (MeSH), dimethyl sulfide (Me2S), dimethyl polysulfides (Me2Sx) and carbon disulfide (CS2) since these volatiles have been identified as predominant odorants in the emission of a wide range of activities in the bio-industry (e.g. aerobic waste water treatment plants, composting plants, rendering plants). In these processes, the occurrence of volatile organic sulfur compounds is mainly related to the presence of anaerobic microsites with consecutive fermentation of sulfur containing organic material and/or to the breakdown of the latter due to

Microbial electrolysis cell simultaneously enhancing methanization and reducing hydrogen sulfide production in anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge.

The effects of microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) at three applied voltages (0.8, 1.3, and 1.6 V) on simultaneously enhancing methanization and reducing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge were studied. The results showed that the MECs at 1.3 V and 1.6 V simultaneously enhanced the methane production by 57.02 and 12.70% and organic matter removal by 38.77 and 11.13%, and reduced H2S production by 94.8 and 98.2%, respectively. MECs at 1.3 V and 1.6 V created a micro-aerobic conditions for the digesters with oxidation-reduction potential as -178∼-2

Promoting effect of ammonia oxidation on sulfur oxidation during composting: Nitrate as a bridge.

Ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are the main odor components in the composting process. Controlling their emissions is very important to reduce environmental pollution and improve the quality of composting products. This study explored the effects of functional bacteria on nitrogen and sulfur metabolism in the composting process of food waste (FW) by adding ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB, A treatment), sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB, S treatment), and combined AOB and SOB (AS treatment), respectively. The key bacterial species involved in nitrogen and sulfur transformation were ident

On the transformation of sulfur-containing amino acids and peptides to volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in the human mouth.

Halitosis is most often caused by oral conditions. Volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), constituting the major components of oral malodor, are produced by anaerobic, gram-negative bacteria retained mainly in periodontal pockets or on the tongue dorsum. Sulfur-containing amino acids serve as substrate for these bacteria. VSC have also been found to have unfavorable effect on the tissue. The aim of this study was to examine whether normal, healthy individuals with no history of halitosis were able to produce VSC from cysteine, when applied as a mouthrinse. A further aim of the study was to investiga

Diversity and functional potential of indigenous sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in anaerobic digesters and a Thiopaq bioreactor.

Sulfides accumulation during anaerobic digestion negatively affects biogas quality, process stability, and infrastructure integrity, making efficient desulfurization strategies essential. This study investigated sulfur-oxidizing bacterial communities associated with anaerobic digesters and a Thiopaq® bioreactor at the Marrakech wastewater treatment plant. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed a marked ecological contrast between the two systems. While the Thiopaq® bioreactor was largely dominated by a single Thioalkalibacteraceae lineage, anaerobic sludge environments harbored a ph

[Microbiological and isotopic geochemical investigation of Lake Kislo-Sladkoe, a meromictic water body at the Kandalaksha Bay Shore (White Sea)].

Microbiological, biogeochemical, and isotopic geochemical investigation of Lake Kislo-Sladkoe (Polusolenoe in early publications) at the Kandalaksha Bay shore (White Sea) was carried out in September 2010. Lake Kislo-Sladkoe was formed in the mid-1900s out of a sea gulf due to a coastal heave. At the time of investigation, the surface layer was saturated with oxygen, while near-bottom water contained sulfide (up to 32 mg/L). Total number of microorganisms was high (12.3 x 10(6) cells/mL on average). Light CO2 fixation exhibited two pronounced peaks. In the oxic zone, the highest rates of photo

Microbial production of volatile sulphur compounds in the large intestine of pigs fed two different diets.

AIMS: To investigate the production of volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) in the segments of the large intestine of pigs and to assess the impact of diet on this production. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pigs were fed two diets based on either wheat and barley (STD) or wheat and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS). Net production of VSC and potential sulphate reduction rate (SRR) (sulphate saturated) along the large intestine were determined by means of in vitro incubations. The net production rate of hydrogen sulphide and potential SRR increased from caecum towards distal colon and were signif

Expanded Diversity of Microbial Groups Capable of Anaerobic Pyrite Reduction and Assimilation of Dissolution Products.

Pyrite, the most abundant iron sulfide mineral in the Earth's crust, has traditionally been considered as a sink for iron and sulfur in the absence of oxygen. Recent research, however, has shown that anaerobic methanogenic archaea can reductively dissolve pyrite and assimilate its products as sources of iron and sulfur. This study explores whether other anaerobic bacteria, including fermentative, nitrate-, iron oxide-, fumarate-, and sulfate-respiring bacteria, can also reduce pyrite and use its dissolution products as sources of iron and sulfur. Results indicate that heterotrophic bacteria re

Electron transfer mechanisms and microbiome stability of mixed-SRB-assembled Bio-FeS hybrids for enhanced chromium remediation.

While biogenic iron sulfide nanoparticles (Bio-FeS NPs) exhibit exceptional efficacy in hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) remediation, their broader application is severely constrained by an overreliance on pure-culture synthesis that oversimplifies complex environmental realities, and a limited understanding of the underlying electron transfer and synergistic removal mechanisms within mixed microbial consortia. To bridge these knowledge gaps, we synthesized a biohybrid material (Bio-FeS@SRB) in situ using a mixed consortium of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Response surface analysis identified t
