Adverse effects of sunscreens in photosensitive patients.

Experimental and epidemiological evidence shows that the common photosensitive disorder of polymorphic light eruption is caused by the ultraviolet A component of sunlight. Sunscreens protect mainly against ultraviolet B; consequently they reduce sunburn and allow longer periods of exposure to the sun and to greater doses of ultraviolet A than would otherwise be possible. Patients with polymorphic light eruption who intend to obtain a tan by sunbathing should not, therefore, be treated with sunscreens which may worsen their rash, but should be advised to sunbathe without sunscreens for a shorte

Associations between sun exposure and other lifestyle variables in Swedish women.

PURPOSE: Sun exposure is associated with risk of several chronic diseases including cancer. The study aim is to investigate whether sun behaviors are related to other lifestyle risk factors of cancer. METHODS: We analyzed data collected in 2003-2004 by self-completed questionnaire from 34,402 Swedish women aged 40-61 years, who comprised 70% of a cohort of originally recruited from a population registry in 1991-1992 (n = 49,259). Participants were asked about annual number of sunburns and annual number of weeks of swimming and sunbathing during 1991-2002, solarium use during 1991-1998 and cur

Self-estimation or phototest measurement of skin UV sensitivity and its association with people's attitudes towards sun exposure.

BACKGROUND: Fitzpatrick's classification is the most common way of assessing skin UV sensitivity. The study aim was to investigate how self-estimated and actual UV sensitivity, as measured by phototest, are associated with attitudes towards sunbathing and the propensity to increase sun protection, as well as the correlation between self-estimated and actual UV sensitivity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 166 primary healthcare patients filled-out a questionnaire investigating attitudes towards sunbathing and the propensity to increase sun protection. They reported their skin type according t

Suntanning with sunscreens: a comparison with sunbed tanning.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Acquiring a tanned skin, either by sunbathing, sunbed use, or a combination of both, is a desirable objective for many people. The objective here was to compare the ultraviolet (UV) exposure resulting from a 2-week vacation spent sunbathing with sunscreen-protected skin, with that from a typical course of 10 sessions on a sunbed. METHODS: A numerical analysis combining data on sunlight and sunbed UV levels, time spent tanning and spectral absorption properties of different types of sunscreen. RESULTS: The analysis showed that unless a sunscreen provides optimal broad-spec

Assessment of sun-related behaviour in individuals with dysplastic naevus syndrome: a comparison between diary recordings and questionnaire responses.

In Sweden, individuals with dysplastic naevus syndrome (DNS-D2), a high risk group for malignant melanoma, are regularly screened and informed about self-examination and sun protection. During the summer of 1994, 54 out of 65 consecutive patients completed 1 month of daily self-recordings of sun-related behaviour. The diary report was compared with questionnaire responses obtained 6 months later concerning sun-related behaviour, both habitual and during the month of self-recording. The correspondence between the sun-related behaviour recorded in the diary and given in response to the questionn

Sun exposure among teenage and young adult cancer survivors in the United Kingdom.

Skin cancers are a common form of second malignant neoplasm among teenage and young adult cancer survivors (TYACS). The Children's Oncology Group specifies that TYACS should adhere to safe sun practices and be screened for skin cancer annually. Cross-sectional self-report data collected by our group indicate over a third of TYACS (n = 229; mean age: 19.8 years) intentionally sunbathe, with many reporting sunburn. TYACS sunbathing, sunburn, and sunbed use are similar to the general population (P > 0.05). These data suggest TYACS require intervention to limit sun exposure and improve their sun s

The evaluation of possible melanoma risk groups of patients in a series of pigmented naevi. Clinical and histological intercorrelations.

The trends of the clinical/histological intercorrelations in two series of pigmented naevi have been compared. One series of naevi represents patients who are habitual sunbathers and/or who have travelled to Southern sunny climates. The other series includes naevi from easily sunburned patients. The sunburner-group is correlated to histological features such as mitoses, atypia and fibrosis of the tumour as well as to an irregular/atypical tumour type. Such trends are not found in the other target group. The sunburners have a poor ability to suntan, while the sunbather group includes good sunta

Attitudes, subjective norms and perception of behavioural control as predictors of sun-related behaviour in Swedish adults.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the major preventable cause of skin cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the explanatory value of attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control on behaviours related to UV exposure. METHOD: A random population-based sample (n = 1752, 18-37 years of age) in the Stockholm County, Sweden, answered a questionnaire with items on sun related behaviours and beliefs. The items concerned issues influenced by the Theory of Planned Behaviour, that is, attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control. Logistic

A randomised population-based intervention to examine the effects of the ultraviolet index on tanning behaviour.

The aim of the following study was to examine the effects of the Ultraviolet (UV) Index and a personal ultraviolet radiation (UVR) intensity indicator on tanning behaviour compared with general, written information about sun protection. A population-based random sample in Sweden was randomly assigned to four groups receiving different information packages (n=3200). Questionnaires were sent before and after the summer of 2001. Positive attitudes towards sunbathing as well as tanning and sunburn frequencies decreased. Knowledge about UV radiation and the use of sun protection increased for all g

Ecological analysis of the relation between sunbeds and skin cancer.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Previous studies implicate sunbeds in skin cancer aetiology. Women use sunbeds considerably more than men and the relation between sunbed use and skin cancer formation may therefore be explored as a sex difference. This presupposes that the sunbathing habits and the distribution of sun vacations among men and women have not changed over the last decades. METHODS: The incidence of new diagnosed cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) per year was provided. The numbers were grouped into sex and different age groups: 0-

Estimates of the current and future burden of melanoma attributable to ultraviolet radiation in Canada.

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is an established cause of cutaneous melanoma. The purpose of this study was to estimate the current attributable and future avoidable burden of melanoma related to exposure to UVR and modifiable UVR risk behaviors (sunburn, sunbathing, and indoor tanning). The population attributable risk (PAR) associated with UVR in 2015 was estimated by comparing Canadian melanoma incidence rates in 2015 to estimated incidence rates of a 1920 birth cohort. Rates were adjusted for changes in reporting and ethnicity. We estimated PARs for modifiable UVR risk behaviors u

Ultraviolet radiation and the risks of cutaneous malignant melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer: perceptions and behaviours of Danish and American adolescents.

The highest prevalence rates of skin malignancy in the northern hemisphere occur in Scandinavia and the United States (USA). Most Danes and Americans receive 50% of their lifetime ultraviolet (UV) radiation before the age of 21, making it important to address sun exposure risks with adolescents. The project was undertaken to determine differences between Danish and American adolescents in knowledge of sun exposure and skin malignancy, activities accounting for sun exposure, and means used for sun protection. Questionnaires regarding skin cancer and sun exposure were distributed to 674 secondar

Parent and Child Characteristics Associated with Child Sunburn and Sun Protection Among U.S. Hispanics.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Skin cancer incidence has been increasing in U.S. Hispanics over several decades and the postdiagnosis outcomes are worse for Hispanics than for non-Hispanic whites. Parents are influential in children's health preventive behaviors, but little is known about parental factors associated with children's skin cancer-related behaviors in the U.S. Hispanic population. The present study examined parental and child correlates of skin cancer-related behaviors (sunburns, sunbathing, sun-protective clothing use, and sunscreen use) of children of Hispanic parents. METHODS: This su
