This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of college students regarding intentional sun exposure (sunbathing). Results are based on responses of 296 Caucasian students to the Sun and Skin Inventory. Frequent sunbathers were more likely than infrequent sunbathers to be women and to report fewer self-perceived risk factors, and were less likely to use sunscreen. Skin phototyping refers to a skin classification scheme based on how the skin responds to sun exposure. Two patients with follicular dermatitis were found to have a contact sensitivity to homomenthyl salicylate, a sunscreening chemical present in a commercially available suntan lotion. One patient did not use the product, but her boyfriend did, and contact between the two individuals resulted in a follicular dermatitis developing in her. A second patient with contact dermatitis to homomenthyl salicylate also had a follicular eruption. Both patients appear to represent true allergic sensitivities.

Childhood exposure to sunlight is a risk factor for melanoma. To formulate a meaningful program to educate children about the ill effects of the sun, their extant knowledge base must be determined. We have used the "draw-and-write" technique to assess children's perceptions about the sun, suntans, and skin cancer. There is less clothing on the beaches, increased accessibility to tropical beaches, and increased use of artificial suntanning equipment. The vulva, traditionally, has been protected from sun exposure. A diagnosis of primary adrenocortical insufficiency was made in a shapely, suntanned girl whose sole complaint was increasing pigmentation. Plasma cortisol was low in spite of markedly elevated levels of ACTH. Plasma cortisol, urinary 17-oxogenic steroids and urinary aldosterone did not respond to three days of ACTH stimulation. Sporadic cases of a severe photocontact dermatitis have appeared in the last few years following use of fruity-smelling suntan preparations and sunlight exposure. We report five such cases in women who developed severe edema and erythema of sun-exposed areas shortly after application of agents containing 6-methylcoumarin used as fragance. Routine photopatch testing was unproductive in reproducing the reaction, but immediate application of 6-methylcoumarin before ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation elicited significant positive results.
