Superconductivity and charge density waves in graphene-based materials.

Graphene-based materials have emerged as a versatile platform for exploring strongly correlated quantum phenomena, particularly superconductivity (SC) and charge density waves (CDWs), owing to their highly tunable electronic structure, reduced dimensionality, and sensitivity to external perturbations. While pristine monolayer graphene is not intrinsically superconducting and exhibits limited propensity toward charge ordering, a variety of engineered graphene systems have demonstrated remarkable SC and CDW phases through mechanisms involving doping, intercalation, proximity coupling, strain, an

Bridging ambient- and high-pressure superconductivity in La2LnNi2O7 films.

The discovery of high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity near 80 K in bilayer nickelates under high pressure has sparked extensive studies. Whereas superconductivity exceeding 40 K was subsequently discovered at ambient pressure in compressively strained films, the relationship between ambient- and high-pressure regimes remains an open question. Here we present a systematic investigation of superconductivity in compressively strained La2LnNi2O7 films (where Ln is a lanthanide) at ambient and high pressures. The normal-state resistivity at ambient pressure, revealed by suppressing

The superconductivity and electron-doping effect in MgP2H14 hydrides.

Room temperature superconductivity has become the tireless pursuit of scientists due to its epoch-making significance. Inspired by the recently predicted high superconductivity in LiP2H14, we identify a new superconductor MgP2H14 by substituting Li with Mg and prove its stability. The superconducting critical temperature (T c) and electron-phonon coupling (EPC) parameters (λ) of MgP2H14 under 280 GPa are predicted to be ∼166 K and ∼1.65, respectively; the high superconductivity of MgP2H14 mainly arises from the strong electron-phonon interaction between H 1s electrons and the H-associated vibr

Superconductivity in the Locally Noncentrosymmetric Th2Mo2Rh2Si4C by Rational Design.

Locally noncentrosymmetric (LNC) superconductors with broken local inversion symmetry can exhibit exotic properties due to antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (SOC). A promising strategy to construct LNC superconductors is to incorporate LNC blocks into superconducting lattices. Herein, a complex LNC superconductor, Th2Mo2Rh2Si4C, was designed and successfully synthesized. This compound adopts a unique 22241* structure, in which the superconducting [Mo2Si2C] block loses its out-of-plane mirror symmetry due to being sandwiched between antifluorite-type [Rh2Si2] and fluorite-type [Si2Rh2] layers.

Crossover from Conventional to Unconventional Superconductivity in 2M-WS2.

Leveraging the reciprocal-space proximity effect between superconducting bulk and topological surface states (TSSs) offers a promising way to topological superconductivity. However, elucidating the mutual influence of bulk and TSSs on topological superconductivity remains a challenge. Here, we report pioneering transport evidence of a thickness-dependent transition from conventional to unconventional superconductivity in 2M-phase WS2 (2M-WS2). As the sample thickness reduces, we see clear changes in key superconducting metrics, including critical temperature, critical current, and carrier dens

Twofold Anisotropic Superconductivity in Bilayer T_{d}-MoTe_{2}.

Noncentrosymmetric two-dimensional superconductors with large spin-orbit coupling offer an opportunity to explore superconducting behaviors far beyond the Pauli limit. One such superconductor, few-layer T_{d}-MoTe_{2}, has large upper critical fields that can exceed the Pauli limit by up to 600%. However, the mechanisms governing this enhancement are still under debate, with theory pointing toward either spin-orbit parity coupling or tilted Ising spin-orbit coupling. Moreover, ferroelectricity concomitant with superconductivity has been recently observed in the bilayer, where strong changes to

Superconductivity of thulium substituted clathrate hexahydrides at moderate pressure.

Due to the BCS theory, hydrogen, the lightest element, would be the prospect of room-temperature superconductor after metallization, but because of the difficulty of the hydrogen metallization, the theory about hydrogen pre-compression was proposed that the hydrogen-rich compounds could be a great option for the high Tc superconductors. The superior properties of TmH6, YbH6 and LuH6 indicated the magnificent potential of heavy rare earth elements for low-pressure stability. Here, we designed XTmH12 (X = Y, Yb, Lu, and La) to obtain higher Tc while maintaining low pressure stability. Most promi

Enhanced Critical Field of Superconductivity at an Oxide Interface.

The nature of superconductivity and its interplay with strong spin-orbit coupling at the KTaO3(111) interfaces remain a subject of debate. To address this problem, we grew epitaxial LaMnO3/KTaO3(111) heterostructures. We show that superconductivity is robust against the in-plane magnetic field, with the critical field of superconductivity reaching ∼25 T in optimally doped heterostructures. The superconducting order parameter is highly sensitive to the carrier density. We argue that spin-orbit coupling drives the formation of anomalous quasiparticles with vanishing magnetic moment, providing si

Pressure-Induced Structural Phase Transition and Superconductivity in NaSn5.

The structural and electronic properties of the tin-rich compound NaSn5 were investigated under pressures of up to 10 GPa on the basis of the evolutionary algorithm (EA) technique coupled with first-principles total energy calculations. Upon compression, the known metallic tetragonal P4̅21m phase transforms into a metallic hexagonal P6/mmm phase at 1.85 GPa accompanied by an unusual change in the existing form of Sn atoms. The P6/mmm phase can be interpreted as a quasi-layered sandwich structure with two Sn layers and one sodium layer. The presence of softening phonon modes and the existence o

High-temperature superconductivity using a model of hydrogen bonds.

Recently, there has been much interest in high-temperature superconductors and more recently in hydrogen-based superconductors. This work offers a simple model that explains the behavior of the superconducting gap based on naive BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) theory and reproduces most effects seen in experiments, including the isotope effect and [Formula: see text] enhancement as a function of pressure. We show that this is due to a combination of the factors appearing in the gap equation: the matrix element between the proton states and the level splitting of the proton.

Charge-2e Superconductivity from a Disordered Pair Density Wave.

We investigate the effects of disorder on a system that in the clean limit is a pair density wave (PDW) superconductor. The charge order of the clean PDW is inevitably lost (via Imry-Ma), but the fate of the superconducting order is less clear. Here, we consider a strongly inhomogeneous limit in which the system consists of a random collection of PDW puddles embedded in a metallic background. When the puddles are dilute, they become phase coherent at low temperatures, resulting in a state that is macroscopically equivalent to a charge-2e s-wave superconductor. This is a mechanism by which a PD

Two-Dimensional Superconductivity at the CaZrO3/KTaO3(001) Heterointerfaces.

Two-dimensional superconductivity at KTaO3 (KTO) heterointerfaces has sparked intensive investigations since its discovery, yet whether the (001)-oriented KTO interface hosts superconductivity remains to be elucidated. Here, we provide unambiguous evidence of superconductivity in two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) at CaZrO3/KTO(001) heterointerfaces, with a superconducting transition TC up to ∼0.25 K. Notably, TC increases linearly with carrier density nS over the range of 4.5 × 1013-10.3 × 1013 cm-2. Furthermore, superconductivity exhibits a pronounced dependence on crystallographic orien

Novel phases and superconductivity in indium sulfides under pressure.

Recent studies of sulfides have highlighted their potential for exploring unique superconductors under pressure. Here we combine crystal structure predictions with ab initio calculations on the crystal structures, electronic structures and superconducting properties of the In-S system within 80 GPa. We predicted six unique In-S sulfides within five stoichiometries. Among them, In2S-C2/m, InS-Fm-3m and InS-Pmmn are thermodynamically stable within certain pressure ranges, whereas In3S-P4/nmm, InS5-P21/m and InS6-P-6 are meta-stable. With the increase of S content, we can observe varied contribut

Unlocking Superconductivity in NdFeAsO via Uranium-Mediated Electron Doping.

NdFeAsO, a typical 1111-type iron-based superconductor (IBS), has a layered crystal structure consisting of alternating charge-reservoir Nd2O2 layers and conducting Fe2As2 layers, offering substantial potential for carrier doping. In this study, uranium (U) was incorporated into the Nd site, and a series of Nd1-xUxFeAsO samples were successfully synthesized. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed a systematic lattice contraction with increasing U content. Consistently, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) directly confirmed the substitution of U4+ for Nd3+ and the e

Twist-programmable superconductivity in spin-orbit-coupled bilayer graphene.

The relative twist angle between layers of near-lattice-matched van der Waals materials is critical for the emergent phenomena associated with moiré flat bands1-3. However, the concept of angle rotation control is not exclusive to moiré superlattices in which electrons directly experience a twist-angle-dependent periodic potential. Instead, it can also be used to induce programmable symmetry-breaking perturbations with the goal of stabilizing desired correlated states. Here we experimentally demonstrate 'moiréless' twist-tuning of superconductivity together with other correlated orders in Bern

Hallmark features of conventional BCS superconductivity in 2H-TaS2.

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are model systems to investigate the interplay between superconductivity and the charge density wave (CDW) order. Here, we use muon spin rotation and relaxation (μ+SR) to probe the superconducting ground state of polycrystalline 2H-TaS2, which hosts a CDW transition at 76 K and superconductivity below 1 K. The μ+SR measurements, conducted down to 0.27 K, are consistent with a nodeless, BCS-like single-gap s-wave state. Fits to the temperature dependence of the depolarization rate and Knight shift measurements support spin-singlet pairing. Crucial

Ising Superconductivity in Bulk Layered Noncentrosymmetric 4H-NbSe_{2}.

Transition-metal dichalcogenides exhibit multiple polymorphs that enable the exploration of diverse quantum states, including valley-selective spin polarization, the valley Hall effect, Ising superconductivity, and nontrivial topology. Monolayer 2H-NbSe_{2} is a promising candidate for realizing Ising superconductivity due to its spin-split, out-of-plane spin-polarized states arising from inversion symmetry breaking and strong spin-orbit coupling. In contrast, bulk 2H-NbSe_{2} retains inversion symmetry and lacks spin splitting, limiting its suitability for hosting Ising superconductivity. Her

Superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric ZrNiAl and HfRhSn-type compounds.

We report the discovery of superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric compounds HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl by measuring their electrical transport and thermodynamic properties. HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, and ZrNiGa crystallize in the ZrNiAl-type crystal structure, whereas HfPtAl crystallizes in the HfRhSn-type crystal structure. Superconducting transitions for HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl are observed at 1.0 K, 1.0 K, 0.42 K, and 0.58 K, respectively. Using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model, the zero-temperature upper critical fieldsµ0Hc2(0) were estimated to be 0.58 T, 0.24 T, 0.08 T, an

Nodeless superconductivity in topologically nontrivial materials HfRuP and ZrRuAs.

Topologically nontrivial electronic states are recently found in a family of noncentrosymmetric transition metal pnictidesTRuX(T=Zr, Hf;X=P, As), presenting a unique platform for superconductivity to interplay with topological electronic states and asymmetric spin-orbit coupling. Here, we investigate the superconducting order parameter of HfRuP and ZrRuAs by measuring the magnetic penetration depth changeΔλ(T)using a method based on the tunnel-diode oscillator. Both compounds show clear exponential temperature dependence inΔλ(T)at low temperatures, suggesting fully-gapped superconductivity. Mo

Superconductivity and topological states in hexagonal TaC and NbC.

Materials with superconductivity and a nontrivial band structure near the Fermi level are promising candidates in realizing topological superconductivity. Using first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated the stability, mechanical properties, superconductivity, electronic structures, and topological states of hexagonal TaC and NbC. The results show that they are stable and have excellent mechanical properties. We predicted that these two carbides are strong electron-phonon coupling superconductors with superconducting transition temperatures of 14.8 and 17.1 K, respectively.
