Congenital unilateral cleft of the soft palate in six dogs.

Unilateral cleft of the soft palate occurs sporadically in dogs, and there are few reports in the veterinary literature regarding its aetiology and management. This report describes six dogs with the condition. The dogs' primary presenting problem was rhinitis. The defects were successfully repaired using a two-layer closure technique with absorbable suture in five of the cases. Surgical correction was not performed in the remaining case.

Lateral buccotomy for removal of a supernumerary cheek tooth in a horse.

A 3-year-old female Standardbred was admitted for evaluation of a firm swelling on the right side located rostral to the facial crest and a firm intraoral swelling located rostral to the erupted cheek teeth. Examination of skull radiographs revealed a supernumerary cheek tooth rostral to the erupted third premolar. The supernumerary tooth was removed via lateral buccotomy. The horse did not have complications after surgery and resumed racing. Lateral buccotomy should be considered for removal of rostrally located maxillary or mandibular cheek teeth. Supernumerary cheek teeth can be found in lo

If you build it, they will learn: A review of models in veterinary surgical education.

Surgical skills are learned through deliberate practice, and veterinary educators are increasingly turning to models for teaching and assessing surgical skills. This review article sought to compile and review the literature specific to veterinary surgical skills models, and to discuss the themes of fidelity, educational outcomes, and validity evidence. Several literature searches using broad terms such as "veterinary surgery model," "veterinary surgical model," and "veterinary surgical simulator" were performed using PubMed, CAB abstracts, and Google scholar. All articles describing a model c

Nasopharyngeal polyps in cats.

Nasopharyngeal polyps are non-neoplastic, inflammatory growths that arise from the middle ear or the eustachian tube and extend into the pharynx. The exact etiology of nasopharyngeal polyps is unclear; proposed etiologies include a response to chronic upper respiratory tract infection, chronic otitis media, ascending infection from the nasopharynx, or a congenital origin. Clinical signs usually relate to obstruction of the nasopharynx, with Horner's syndrome and head tilt being consistent with otitis media and otitis interna, respectively. Diagnostic tools include digital or visual examination

[Veterinary surgeon Friedrich Heinrich Roloff (1830-1885)-- his contributions to animal nutrition].

In German speaking countries Fr. H. ROLOFF (1830-1885) was one of the first veterinarians, who was active in the field of nutrition related diseases as osteomalacia, rickets or lupinosis. After careful epidemiologic studies, he developed hypotheses about the pathogenesis of the above mentioned diseases and tested them in experiments (with dogs or sheep). His work demonstrates, that clinical observations may stimulate research in animal nutrition.

Intra-abdominal castration in the rat.

Normal rat posture results in proximity of the scrotum to bedding and feces, which predisposes rats to postoperative complications if castration is done using standard scrotal and prescrotal approaches. This column describes a ventral abdominal approach for castration in the rat.

Surgical cleft soft palate repair in a foal.

An Anglo-Arab foal with bilateral postprandial nasal discharge was diagnosed as having a full-length defect of the soft palate. Surgical repair was attempted using a combination of two surgical approaches. Initially a mandibular symphysiotomy approach was used. The posterior portion of the defect did not heal adequately, so a ventral laryngotomy, bisecting the body of the thyroid cartilage and extending to a pharyngotomy approach, was performed 5 months later. The foal has since matured fully despite a slight unilateral nasal discharge. This case report demonstrates that these two surgical app

The effect of unilateral arytenoid lateralization on rima glottidis area in canine cadaver larynges.

Five modifications of a cricoarytenoid lateralization and two modifications of a thyroarytenoid lateralization laryngoplasty technique were evaluated for their effect on rima glottidis area. All procedures and evaluations were performed on canine cadaver larynges. Cricoarytenoid lateralization (CAL) techniques provided a greater increase of the size of the glottic opening than did any of the thyroarytenoid lateralization techniques. Cricoarytenoid and interarytenoid disarticulation associated with CAL did not significantly increase glottic size compared with normal. After disarticulation of th

Extraction of cheek teeth using a lateral buccotomy approach in 114 horses (1999-2009).

REASON FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: There are few published data regarding the success rates of cheek tooth (CT) removal by lateral buccotomy in the horse. OBJECTIVES: A retrospective study of 114 horses admitted to 2 private equine referral hospitals over a 10 year period (1999-2009), which underwent CT removal via a lateral buccotomy. METHODS: Hospital records were analysed and details including case details, presenting complaint and results of all diagnostic tests and surgical reports were documented. Information obtained during post operative reassessment was also available for analysis. Lo

Protocol of the Caesarean section as performed in daily bovine practice in Belgium.

In the early part of the 20th century, veterinarians began to perform Caesarean section (CS) in cows. At first, it was a final remedy to save the calf and/or the cow in more complicated obstetrical cases. As in Belgium, the Belgian Blue (BB) breed has become the predominant beef breed, CS are currently performed on a routine basis in daily practice. The overwhelming success of the breed is based on its hypermuscularity and exceptional carcass characteristics with high killing out (>70%). These and other characteristics made the breed popular and newborn animals valuable. Consequently, farmers

Subtotal epiglottectomy for the management of epiglottic retroversion in a dog.

A six-year-old male neutered Yorkshire terrier was evaluated for severe, acute-onset, inspiratory dyspnoea. Laryngoscopy revealed retroversion of the epiglottis with intermittent occlusion of the rima glottidis during inspiration. The dog underwent both temporary and permanent epiglottopexy procedures that were unsuccessful. Subtotal epiglottectomy was performed and resulted in permanent resolution of dyspnoea without evidence of dysphagia or aspiration. This case highlights potential complications associated with management of this condition as well as describing the successful use of subtota

Development of perioperative care for pigs undergoing laryngeal transplantation: a case series.

Pigs are ideal animal models for airway surgical research, facilitating the successful translation of science into clinical practice. Despite their ubiquitous use, there is a paucity of information on the perioperative care of pigs, especially for major procedures. In a series of experiments to investigate laryngeal transplantation, we combined veterinary and medical experience to develop protocols for perioperative management of pigs, including high dependency care. Novel airway management methods were developed. A pain scoring system was used to direct analgesia use. Fluid balance and electr

Surgery of the avian respiratory system.

The avian respiratory system is different from that of mammals. Although some surgical techniques can be adapted from those used in mammals, many are unique to avian patients (e.g., choanal atresia correction and air sac cannulation). This article reviews the common surgeries of the upper and lower respiratory systems and describes surgical techniques for the treatment of chronic sinusitis and cranial coelomic mass removal.

Assessment of the modified Forssell's procedure for the treatment of oral stereotypies in 10 horses.

The modified Forssell's procedure was performed on 10 horses in an attempt to cure oral stereotypies. Three horses were cured completely, two horses were considerably improved, and five horses continued to perform the stereotypy after periods of remission ranging from two weeks to six months. This rate of success for the modified Forssell's procedure, as in other published reports, was lower than for the original Forssell's procedure. Surgery to eliminate a stereotypical behaviour pattern may exacerbate the stress for an animal and the modified Forssell's procedure can no longer be recommended

Allergic contact dermatitis in veterinary surgeons.

Thirty-six of 37 veterinary surgeons with incapacitating dermatitis had allergic contact dermatitis, mainly from antibiotics such as spiramycin, Penethamate BP and tylosin. Eight were sensitive to rubber materials. Twenty of 36 had positive prick or scratch tests, mainly to animal hair. The atopic sensitivities were relevant to the contact dermatitis since most of those who have them develop contact reactions from cows' hair and from obstetric work with cows. Protein contact dermatitis seems to be an important predisposing factor for the development of incapacitating allergic contact dermatiti
