Safety and Effectiveness of G-Mesh® Gynecological Meshes Intended for Surgical Treatment of Pelvic Organ Prolapse-A Retrospective Analysis.

Background: The prevalence of POP in women ranges from 30-40%, with 10-20% requiring surgical intervention. Annually, over 225,000 surgical procedures for POP are performed in the United States. The severity of prolapse is assessed using the four-stage POP-Q system, which facilitates clinical research by providing a standardized measure of defect severity. Surgical intervention is indicated for more severe cases, with various techniques available through vaginal or abdominal access. Synthetic meshes, primarily made of polypropylene (PP), are commonly used in POP surgeries due to their biocompa

Four-arm polypropylene mesh for vaginal vault prolapse-surgical technique and outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced vaginal vault prolapse (VVP) can occur rarely after any type of hysterectomy. Several types of procedures have been applied to correct this defect, but optimal management is still pending. The aim of this study was to describe the surgical technique and results of four-arm transvaginal mesh (FATVM) application for advanced VVP. STUDY DESIGN: We followed up for 24 months, 160 patients with VVP > II vc (according to the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification Scale (POPQ)), who underwent FAMTVM from 2014 to2017. FAMTVM was inserted with the anterior arms through the obturator f

A novel tropoelastin-based resorbable surgical mesh for pelvic organ prolapse repair.

Pelvic organ prolapse is a common condition that affects 1 in 4 women across all age groups. It is mainly caused by vaginal birth injury and can be exacerbated by obesity and increased age. Until recently, treatment strategies often used non-degradable synthetic meshes for reconstructive surgery. However, owing to their frequent, unacceptable rate of adverse events such as mesh erosion, transvaginal meshes have been banned in many countries. Recent reports have highlighted the urgent need for biocompatible design of meshes for a safe and effective treatment in the long term. This study reports

Rectal erosion of synthetic mesh used in posterior colporrhaphy requiring surgical removal.

Treatment of pelvic organ prolapse with transvaginally placed synthetic mesh has recently increased. Several reports of complications have surfaced raising the overall question of safety regarding its use for vaginal prolapse repair. This case report describes a rectal erosion and dyspareunia that resulted from mesh placed into the posterior vaginal wall. A 47-year-old woman underwent a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy and a posterior repair with polypropylene mesh resulting in a rectal erosion. Despite removal of all of the mesh that could be excised rectally resulting in a healed rect

Urogynecological surgical mesh implants: New trends in materials, manufacturing and therapeutic approaches.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) are two prevalent disorders affecting 30-40% of women worldwide. Current strategies to repair or improve these medical conditions are non-surgical options such as physiotherapy, or surgical options such as the use of vaginal meshes. The synthetic material polypropylene (PP), which has long been used for manufacturing these vaginal meshes, is associated with severe complications such as chronic pain, infection or mesh erosion. As a result of a widespread reporting and unacceptably high rates of complications, these issues have be

In vivo evaluation of bacterial infection involving morphologically different surgical meshes.

OBJECTIVE: To study the influence of morphology of surgical meshes on the course of bacterial infection under the influence of the host immune system in an in vivo chronic bacterial infection model. BACKGROUND: The use of prosthetic meshes has increased dramatically the last decades in abdominal wall reconstructive surgery. Whereas infection is becoming a more frequent complication, attention is increasingly drawn to the influence of the surgeon's mesh choice on the course of this complication. METHODS: Samples of 6 often applied surgical meshes were contaminated with a bioluminescent strain

[Synthetic meshes for transvaginal surgical cure of genital prolapse: evaluation in 2005].

Since 1996, prosthetic meshes have become increasingly popular for transvaginal surgical cure of genital prolapse. In light of the growing number of proposed techniques and materials we reviewed the experience of the pioneers in order to provide surgeons with the most objective information available. We reviewed the literature indexed in Meline/PubMed and Current Contents retaining all work concerning resorbable and non-resorbable meshes. For the larger class of non-resorbable meshes we also reviewed articles by category of material, each type of mesh being carefully defined: different composi

[Laparoscopic herniorrhaphy of inguinal hernia. Reinforcement of the transverse fascia with surgical mesh].

A basic principle of inguinal herniorrhaphy is the reconstruction of the transverse fascia. This laparoscopic technique described, consists in an augmentation of the transverse fascia by nonabsorbable mesh in pre-peritoneal position. Some aspects should be recommended for laparoscopic herniorrhaphy: The anatomic structures must be dissected exactly. The prosthetic mesh should be fixed to the fascia by multiple staples. With indirect inguinal hernias the mesh should encircle the spermatic cord.

Polypropylene surgical mesh coated with extracellular matrix mitigates the host foreign body response.

Surgical mesh devices composed of synthetic materials are commonly used for ventral hernia repair. These materials provide robust mechanical strength and are quickly incorporated into host tissue; factors that contribute to reduced hernia recurrence rates. However, such mesh devices cause a foreign body response with the associated complications of fibrosis and patient discomfort. In contrast, surgical mesh devices composed of naturally occurring extracellular matrix (ECM) are associated with constructive tissue remodeling, but lack the mechanical strength of synthetic materials. A method for

Hybrid chest wall reconstruction using a composite scaffold and mesh: a surgical technique.

Chest wall reconstruction after oncologic resection or for congenital defects such as Poland syndrome poses significant technical challenges. Available reconstructive options present distinct limitations: synthetic meshes provide immediate mechanical support but are biologically inert, rigid prostheses carry higher infection risk and limited adaptability, and biologic matrices may lack early structural rigidity. Here, we describe a hybrid reconstruction technique that combines a double-layer Marlex® mesh (Davol Inc., Cranston, RI, USA) with a Vitagraft® bioactive scaffold (DMC Equipamentos, Sã

Partially Resorbable Mesh Inclusion between Dissected Layers during Surgical Repair of Aortic Dissection.

Surgical management of aortic dissection is technically challenging for different reasons. Reapproximation of dissected layers because of fragility of the dissected aortic wall layers is of major concern. Many techniques have been described to restore the integrity of aortic wall. Inclusion of a partially resorbable mesh fixed with glue, between the dissected layers, may be a simple and effective method for providing a secure and viable end-to-end anastomosis between aortic stump and a Dacron graft.

The Role of Biologic Mesh and Fundoplication in the Surgical Management of Hiatal Hernias: A Multicenter Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Hiatal hernia repair is associated with substantial recurrence of both hiatal hernia and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (GER). While small randomized controlled trials demonstrate limited differences in outcomes with use of mesh or fundoplication type, uncertainty remains. METHODS: A multicenter, retrospective review of patients undergoing surgical treatment of hiatal hernias between 2015 and 2020 was performed. Patients with mesh and with suture-only repair were compared, and partial versus complete fundoplication was compared. Primary outcomes were hernia recurrence and o
