Background: Living in deprived areas is associated with poorer outcomes after certain vascular procedures and surgical site infection in other specialties. Our primary objective was to determine whether living in more income-deprived areas was associated with groin wound surgical site infection after arterial intervention. Secondary objectives were to determine whether living in more income-deprived areas was associated with mortality and clinical consequences of surgical site infection. Methods: Postal code data for patients from the United Kingdom who were included in the Groin Wound Infecti

BACKGROUND: Surgical wound classification (SWC) is used for risk stratification of surgical site infection (SSI) and serves as the basis for measuring quality of care. The objective was to examine the accuracy and reliability of SWC. This study was purposed to evaluate the discrepancies in SWC as assessed by three groups: surgeons, an infection control nurse, and histopathologic evaluation. The secondary aim was to compare the risk-stratified SSI rates using the different SWC methods for 30 d postoperatively.
METHODS: An analysis was performed of the appendectomies from January 2013 to June 2

Early surgical intervention decreases mortality in necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs). Yet, a subset of patients will not have NSTIs (non-NSTIs) at the time of exploration. We hypothesized that NSTI and non-NSTI patients had similar causative organisms and that intraoperative wound cultures could help guide management. Culture results and outcomes were compared for all patients undergoing surgery for suspected NSTIs over a seven-year-period. Of 295 patients, 240 (81.4%) had NSTIs. Of the 55 non-NSTI patients (18.6%), 50 had cellulitis and 5 had abscesses. NSTI and non-NSTI patients had

BACKGROUND: Cesarean section (CS) is the most common surgical procedure worldwide and although usually safe is sometimes associated with morbidity and mortality. Surgical site infection (SSI) post-CS is a frequently encountered cause of prolonged hospitalization and financial burden on the healthcare system. The reported incidence is 9%-17%. Risk factors are poor antenatal care, comorbidities, chorioamnionitis, prolonged labor, improper use of antibiotics, and emergency delivery. Although enormous data are available regarding the risk factors for SSI, not much information exists about factors

To investigate the potential role of bacteriophages in the treatment of surgical infections, we conducted a retrospective analysis of four surgical patients who have sought treatment at the Eliava Phage Therapy Center, Tbilisi, Georgia. Two patients had chronic osteomyelitis, one presented with a diabetic foot ulcer, and the fourth patient had developed a severe infectious complication after skin grafting surgery. Patients were treated with different combinations of bacteriophage preparations, based on the sensitivity of the isolated bacterial strain toward commercially available bacteriophage

OBJECTIVE: Surgical site infection (SSI) with lower extremity incisions represents a modifiable source of major morbidity. Our institutional bundled care protocol to decrease SSI includes optimization of perioperative risk factors, dedicated wound closure tray, and voluntary use of a closed surface negative pressure wound therapy (cNPWT) device applied over closed incisions in the operating room. This study examined the individual effect of cNPWT on SSI reduction and other perioperative outcomes.
METHODS: All patients with lower extremity or infrainguinal incisions between January 2016 and De

BACKGROUND: Surgical wound infection after cesarean section varies from 2.5 to 16.1%, thus the utilization of antibiotic prophylaxis has increased routinely and irrationally. Despite this, we can still see cases of infections.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if the antibiotic prophylaxis with cefotaxime is associated with the decreased incidence of wound infection in patients submitted to cesarean section without risk factors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was carried out as a randomized clinical trial in patients submitted to cesarean section. Two groups were formed: in the first group we admini

Surgical wound infections are a frequent complication of head and neck cancer surgery. In a group of 159 consecutive patients we analyzed bacteriological cultures from 21 with suppurative draining from the wound. In 3 cases cultures were monomicrobial, in 12 cultures were polymicrobial, and in 6 no bacterial isolate was obtained from the cultured material. Gram-positive aerobes were the most frequent bacteria (54%), followed by gram-negative aerobes (38%) and anaerobes (8%). No relation was found between bacteriological profile, antibiotic prophylaxis, tumor site, tumor stage, or surgical proc

BACKGROUND: There has been no consensus from previous studies of risk factors for surgical wound infections (SWI) and postoperative bacteraemia for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
METHODS: Data on 15 potential risk factors were prospectively collected on all patients undergoing CABG surgery during a 12-month period.
RESULTS: Of 693 patients, 62 developed 65 SWI using the Centres for Disease Control definition: 23 were sternal wound infections and 42 were arm or leg wound infections at the site of conduit harvest. There were 19 episodes of postoperative bacter

Wound perfusion and oxygenation are important determinants of the development of postoperative wound infections. Supplemental fluid administration significantly increases tissue oxygenation in surrogate wounds in the subcutaneous tissue of the upper arm in perioperative surgical patients. We tested the hypothesis that supplemental fluid administration during and after elective colon resections decreases the incidence of postoperative wound infections. Patients undergoing open colon resection were randomly assigned to small-volume (n = 124, 8 mL.kg(-1).h(-1)) or large-volume (n = 129, 16-18 mL.

753 patients who underwent general surgery were prospectively analysed with respect to postoperative wound infection and the pulmonary infection rate. A clear distinction was made between the real infection rate and those infections that were not combined with other complications and were therefore called "isoated" infections. It could be demonstrated that operations concerned with colon and perforated viscera had an increased isolated wound sepsis rate, the gastric resection, however, could be counted as a clean operation. Furthermore, the would sepsis rate after colonic surgery was also very

BACKGROUND: Infection is the most common postoperative complication within the surgical wound and during severe trauma. In spite of the use of modern sterile techniques and prophylaxis, infection continues to be a leading cause of death in these patients. Therefore, it has become crucial to develop new alternatives to prevent the effects of trauma and other complications on the immune system and improve resistance to infection. The objective of this study was to test the prophylactic effects of oral administration of active hexose correlated compound (AHCC), a natural immunoenhancer, on surviv

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common post-operative complication, especially in trauma laparotomies. Incisional negative pressure wound therapy (iNPWT) is a novel technique in reducing SSIs. We aim to study the rate of wound complications in trauma laparotomy with standard primary closure with staples vs iNPWT.
METHODS: We had 152 patients meeting inclusion criteria who underwent emergent trauma laparotomies performed at Sentara Norfolk General from 2017 to 2020. We had 79 patients in the standard staple group and 73 patients in the iNWPT group. We then analyzed surgical site

OBJECTIVE: Vascular surgical groin wound infection (VS-GWI) has multiple causes and frequently is manifested as a limb- or life-threatening problem, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. For patients undergoing operative extirpation, in situ repair, extra-anatomic bypass, or ligation can be used; however, limited data exist describing comparative results of the different operative choices or conduit subtypes. Therefore, we sought to describe our experience with management of VS-GWI and to detail outcomes of the different strategies.

BACKGROUND: Deep sternal wound infections (DSWIs) are a rare but serious complication after median sternotomy, and treatment success depends mainly on surgical experience. We compared treatment outcomes after conventional sternal rewiring and reconstruction with no sternal rewiring in patients with a sternal wound infection.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled patients who developed a DSWI after an open-heart procedure with median sternotomy at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, at the St. Rafael Hospital, Zalaegerszeg, Hungary, between 2012 and 2016. All patients received negative pressure

After reviewing the literature about the microbial spectrum, the risk factors of post-operative infections, and the results of surgical interventions, the following recommendation can be made for the management of bite wounds:FRESH, OPEN WOUNDS: surgical debridement, if appropriate, then an antiseptic lavage with a fluid consisting of povidone iodine and ethanol (e.g., Betaseptic(®)), no antibiotics, primary wound closurenearly closed fresh wounds (e.g., cat bites): surgical debridement, if appropriate, dressing with an antiseptic-soaked compress for ~60 minutes with repeated soaking (e.g., Be

Sepsis is the commonest cause of death following burn injuries. The main source of the bacteria which cause the onset of sepsis is the burn wound itself. We evaluated the question of whether immediate necrectomy versus early necrectomy leads to a decrease in septic complications, as well as posttraumatic lethality. We evaluated 66 patients, 33 of whom underwent immediate necrectomy (i.e., within the first 3 days posttraumatically, group 1); the remaining 33 patients underwent necrectomy in the early posttraumatic phase (from the fourth posttraumatic day, group 2). Following immediate necrectom

Group A streptococci account for less than 1% of all surgical wound infections but are an important cause of nosocomial outbreaks. We report here a cluster of four group A streptococcal infections that occurred within an 11-day period on a single surgical service. The index case presented with toxic shock-like syndrome. Epidemiologic investigation did not identify any relationship between infections. Restriction endonuclease analysis and M and T typing found the four isolates to be unrelated. Restriction endonuclease analysis is a useful tool for determining relatedness of nosocomial isolates
