In response to the changing landscape of transnational surrogacy, the industry has introduced flexible business models requiring women to move within and across borders to act as surrogate mothers. However, knowledge about their experiences remain vague, particularly concerning women traveling abroad under illegal conditions. Building upon interviews with Thai surrogate mothers, I demonstrate how their im/mobility reveals critical insights into labor conditions and power relations and is formed within the global reproductive industry as well as the specific national context. I also argue that

BACKGROUND: The surrogacy of modern composite endpoints for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality is unknown.
METHODS: We reviewed all primary publications of RCTs for non-acute atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease utilizing composite endpoints published 2019-2023 in first tier journals, and included all trials utilizing composite outcomes of ≥3 components. Trial-level surrogacy of outcomes was assessed using the R2 coefficient of determination, with a threshold for validating surrogacy at R2 = 0.8.
RESULTS: Forty-five (n = 45) RCTs met the inclusion criteria, of which 19 (42%) tested sec

ABSTRACT: Surrogacy is a form of assisted reproductive technology in which a woman carries a child on behalf of an individual or couple and relinquishes the child following birth. Since its emergence in its contemporary form in the late 1970s, surrogacy has been the subject of ongoing debate and controversy, shaped by developments in scientific research and social discourse. This work proposes a theoretical framework that directly engages with the ethical and practical paradoxes of surrogacy rather than bypassing them. The analysis is grounded in a comprehensive review of 86 scholarly articles

Understanding the likelihood of a live birth is important for fertility treatment planning, particularly when one cycle fails and further treatment may be contemplated. This study aims to estimate the chance of live birth among gestational surrogates undergoing altruistic surrogacy arrangements between 2009 and 2016 in Victoria, Australia. A total of 81 gestational surrogates with 170 embryo transfer cycles were included. Of the 170 embryo transfer cycles, the majority were single embryo transfers (SETs; 97.1%), using frozen/thawed embryos (97.6%) which had been fertilized by intracytoplasmic

BACKGROUND: Information on gestational surrogacy arrangement and outcomes is limited in Australia.
AIMS: This national population study investigates the epidemiology of gestational surrogacy arrangement in Australia: treatment procedures, pregnancy and birth outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of 169 intended parents cycles and 388 gestational carrier cycles in Australia in 2004-2011. Demographics were compared between intended parents and gestational carrier cycles. Pregnancy and birth outcomes were compared by number of embryos transferred.
RESULTS: Over h

INTRODUCTION: In patients with surgical emergencies, balancing time to operative intervention with goals-of-care discussions is critical. When patients lack capacity, surgeons depend on surrogate consent (SC). We aimed to understand outcomes associated with SC compared to patient consent in emergent surgery.
METHODS: We performed a single-center, retrospective review of patients undergoing emergent laparotomy within 6 h of consultation. Data were collected on demographics, clinical characteristics, outcomes, and details of consent. Univariate and multivariable analyses were performed, adjusti

This paper offers a comprehensive review of the gestational surrogacy process in the US, as well as internationally, focusing on the legal and ethical challenges that gestational carriers, intended parents, fertility providers, and OB/GYNs may face. The objective of this review article is to serve as an overview and provide information on legal, cultural, and ethical aspects of the decisions to pursue gestational surrogacy both for intended parents and gestational carriers in the US and globally. By understanding the surrogacy landscape and the obstacles, the surrogacy agencies and other invol

Comprehensive access to medically assisted reproduction procedures and techniques in Argentina has been assured by National Law No. 26,862 since 2013. This Law does not include surrogacy procedures, and the lack of specific regulation shifts practices to a paralegal setting. In this context, planned parenthood by male couples through surrogacy is performed through actions that convey demands for access rights and active State policies. For these couples, the argument is that surrogacy is the only option to have a child with a genetic bond with at least one of the two parents and recognize both

OBJECTIVE: To examine the psychological impact of gestational surrogacy on surrogates' families.
BACKGROUND: ASRM practice committee guidelines recommend that psychological counseling prior to surrogacy include consideration of a surrogate's own family, but there has been little research to help guide mental health professionals (MHPs) providing implications counseling.
METHODS: Fifty-nine family members from 16 surrogate families were recruited and data were collected on family relationships, child psychological well-being, and family experiences of surrogacy. Family members filled out a se

This study aimed to evaluate the attitudes of male and female members of the public toward uterus transplantation (UTx), surrogacy, and adoption in Japan via a web-based survey. One thousand six hundred participants were recruited with equal segregation of age (20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s) and gender. We assessed the association between ethical view and gender, age, infertility, and the knowledge level of UTx, using a questionnaire. The findings were as follows. First, 36.5% and 31.0% of respondents agreed that UTx and gestational surrogacy should be approved, respectively. Second, the respondents

UNLABELLED: Minimal residual disease (MRD) has been endorsed by the FDA Oncology Drugs Advisory Committee as an endpoint for accelerated approval in multiple myeloma based on individual patient data collected from randomized trials. However, emerging data from recent trials were not included. A novel artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted framework is proposed, which automates information identification and extraction, providing up-to-date analyses that confirm moderate trial-level and strong individual patient-level associations between MRD- rates at suspected complete response (MRD-CR) and su

The research presented inquires into how women in the United States who act as surrogates independently, without using agencies, to help others form their families organize, experience, and understand these independent journeys. Based on ethnographic interviews with ten white, middle-class U.S. women, this article analyzes their choice to undertake independent (non-agency directed) surrogacy journeys in the United States, a subject which has received little specific attention in the literature. Data from in-depth interviews regarding the decision to carry out an independent surrogacy, the know

Thailand's recent legalisation of same-sex marriage marks a historic milestone in Southeast Asia yet falls short of achieving full reproductive equality. Same-sex couples remain excluded by restrictive surrogacy laws, developed in 2015, which only allow altruistic arrangements for married heterosexual couples. Proposed legal amendments aim to expand access to the healthcare system and surrogacy while hospital-based maternity and neonatal care remain critically unprepared. This paper discusses the gap between legal progress and clinical readiness, arguing that without national standardised surr

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to systematically map existing literature on surrogacy birth care, focusing specifically on hospital-based practices during birth and the immediate postnatal period.
INTRODUCTION: Surrogacy is becoming an increasingly common pathway to parenthood. However, maternity and childbirth systems remain underprepared to manage the unique challenges of surrogacy birth care. Although certain countries have guidelines, care for surrogates, intended parents, and newborns remains inconsistent. These variations highlight the urgent need for standardized, evidence-based g

INTRODUCTION: Surrogacy has recently emerged as a crucial fertility treatment solution due to the development of in-vitro fertilization (IVF). There are however a number of socio-ethical and legal issues, including parental rights, children's basic human rights, and abuse of women, most notably surrogate exploitation. In Ghana, these socio-ethical issues have not been well studied. This study aimed to explore the socio-ethical and legal issues regarding surrogacy in Ghana.
METHOD: A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted. A total of 13 participants comprising couples undergoing fert

Pregnancy complicated by hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and its variants presents significant challenges in obstetric care. Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), a key feature of HUS, involves microvascular thrombosis that can affect any organ, leading to thrombocytopenia, Coombs-negative hemolytic anemia, and organ dysfunction. The most common forms of thrombotic microangiopathies encountered in pregnant patients include hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, HUS and acute fatty liver of pregnancy. TMAs are classified into

PURPOSE: The surrogacy of biochemical recurrence (BCR) for overall survival (OS) in localized prostate cancer remains controversial. Herein, we evaluate the surrogacy of BCR using different surrogacy analytic methods.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Individual patient data from 11 trials evaluating radiotherapy dose escalation, androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) use, and ADT prolongation were obtained. Surrogate candidacy was assessed using the Prentice criteria (including landmark analyses) and the two-stage meta-analytic approach (estimating Kendall's tau and the R2). STUDY QUESTION: What are the experiences of single men using egg donation and surrogacy as a route to parenthood?
SUMMARY ANSWER: The fathers mainly had a positive relationship with the surrogate and simultaneously exercised agency, and experienced challenges, during the process of surrogacy.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Little is known about single men's experiences of egg donation and surrogacy arrangements. Studies have focused on single men's decision-making processes about the use of surrogacy and family functioning once these families are formed. Questions remain about how fathers experience

The impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic have been catastrophic internationally, with alarming rates of cases and deaths, as well as travel bans and countrywide lockdowns. While many industries are experiencing the deleterious effects of Covid-19, international surrogacy is facing enormous ethical challenges resulting from the pandemic. Drawing on the first author's reflections on research with Indian surrogate mothers, coupled with contemporary literature, this paper highlights the impacts of Covid-19 on surrogacy in India, particularly regarding the strict lockdown laws intended to protect civil

The first child carried by a surrogate after in vitro fertilization in the United States was born in 1985. Since then, the number of such births has steadily grown. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of gestational carrier cycles increased from 727 in 1999 to 3,432 in 2013, encompassing more than 18,000 children born over this period. Surrogacy offers an alternative to adoption. However, it also disrupts traditional notions of parentage and gestation and complicates the role of obstetrician-gynecologists (ob-gyns) in helping their patients navigate difficul
