Sweat Gland Tumors Arising on Acral Sites: A Molecular Survey.

Recurrent oncogenic drivers have been identified in a variety of sweat gland tumors. Recently, integration of human papillomavirus type 42 (HPV42) has been reported in digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPA). The main objectives of the present study were (i) to provide an overview of the prevalence of previously identified oncogenic drivers in acral sweat gland tumors and (ii) to genetically characterize tumors in which no recurrent genetic alteration has been identified yet. Cases of acral sweat gland tumors were identified from the database of the French network CARADERM. After histologic rev

Poroid hidradenoma in a child: an unusual presentation.

Poroid neoplasm is a benign sweat gland neoplasm that accounts for 10% of sudoriferous tumors. Poroid hidradenoma is an uncommon variant that usually affects adults, with a peak of incidence in the seventh decade. It is rare in children. We report the first case of poroid hidradenoma presenting in a 13-year-old boy.

A Growing Mass under the Nail: Subungual Eccrine Poroma.

Eccrine poroma is a benign adnexal tumour, which originates from the acrosyringium of eccrine sweat glands. Eccrine poroma is an uncommon neoplasm, the typical clinical presentation of which is a solitary soft sessile reddish papule protruding from a cup-shaped shallow depression. Many challenges remain in the diagnosis of eccrine poroma because it does not always present with classical features and may mimic any other cutaneous benign and malignant lesions. Eccrine poromas may occur on any skin surface with sweat glands; on the other hand, the most common sites of involvement include the palm

Endocrine Mucin-Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma of the Eyelid Associated With Mucinous Adenocarcinoma.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma, a rare, low-grade neoplasm with predilection for the eyelids, has been posited as a precursor to invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma. Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma and its concurrence with mucinous adenocarcinoma have received little attention in the ophthalmic literature. The combination of the 2 histologic patterns parallels endocrine ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast and its transition to Type B invasive mucinous carcinoma. The authors describe a 59-year-old man who developed a tumor of the right upper eyelid showing endoc

Immunohistochemical demonstration of carcinoembryonic antigen and related antigens in various cutaneous keratinous neoplasms and verruca vulgaris.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), which is a well-known marker for the normal sweat gland apparatus and its neoplasms in the skin, was recently demonstrated in sebaceous neoplasms. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of CEA and related antigens in the other cutaneous keratinous neoplasms and verruca vulgaris. Normal adult skin, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), senile keratosis, Bowen's disease, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), seborrhoeic keratosis and verruca vulgaris were stained immunohistochemically with a panel of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies that recognize different epitop

Immunohistochemical characterization of mammary squamous cell carcinoma of the dog.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the mammary gland is rare in both veterinary and human medicine. Whereas human metaplastic and squamous variants are known, the objectives of the current study were to ascertain the presence of such entities in canine mammary tumors and to distinguish them from other (epidermal, sweat gland) squamous tumors that may develop in the same area. A panel of antibodies (anti-cytokeratin [CK] 19, CK 14, CK 5/6, pancytokeratin, and vimentin) was used on 18 mammary gland malignancies with squamous features and 16 malignant skin tumors (11 squamous cell carcinomas of the skin

Apoeccrine glands in nevus sebaceus.

Apoeccrine glands were found in 13 of 57 specimens of nevus sebaceus. The glands showed the basic structure of eccrine glands, but differed in that a part of the secretory duct was lined by characteristic apocrine epithelium. The apocrine alteration varied from slight apocrine changes in a few secretory cells to an almost complete alteration of the secretory epithelium in other glands. The association with changes in the excretory ducts of rare glands suggested a transformation of eccrine into apocrine glands. It was nevertheless considered as most likely that a majority of the apocrine glands

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in a background of sialadenoma papilliferum: a case report.

Sialadenoma papilliferum is a rare tumor, primarily of minor salivary gland origin, first described by Abrams and Finck (Cancer 24:1057-63, 1969). It is both an exophytic and endophytic papillary lesion histologically resembling syringocystadenoma papilliferum of sweat gland. The tumor is considered benign although rare recurrent cases have been reported. Three cases of malignant transformation of sialadenoma papilliferum have been described in the literature. We report a high grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in a background of sialadenoma papilliferum, at the base of the tongue, an unus

Do not break a sweat: avoiding pitfalls in the diagnosis of sweat gland tumors.

The group of malignant sweat gland neoplasms is characterized by a wide biologic spectrum, including tumors with indolent behavior, low-grade malignant potential with locally destructive tumor growth and high local recurrence rates and high-grade malignant potential characterized by risk for disseminated disease and disease-related mortality. Reliable diagnosis to predict behavior may be challenging for a number of reasons. The clinical presentation is often nonspecific. Many of the tumors are rare, and they are only infrequently encountered in routine diagnostic practice. A significant subset

Update on Malignant Sweat Gland Tumors.

Malignant sweat gland tumors are rare cutaneous neoplasms, traditionally separated according to their behavior into low- and high-grade malignant. There is significant morphologic overlap, and outright malignant tumors may show relatively bland histologic features. They may, therefore, be mistaken easily for benign neoplasms. Recognition of these tumors and accurate diagnosis is important for early treatment to prevent aggressive behavior and adverse outcome. This article provides an overview of 4 important entities with emphasis on diagnostic pitfalls, differential diagnosis and recent develo

Malignant sweat gland tumor presenting as an unusual dural-based lesion: case report.

Malignant sweat gland tumors are rare neoplasms with high recurrence and metastasis rates of over 50%. Clinically, they are often either not diagnosed or diagnosed improperly and are encountered as a histological surprise. Herein, we report a 50-year-old woman who suffered from chronic headaches and a left-side limping gait. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a T1 and T2 heterogeneous intense dural-based lesion at right-frontal convexity. The pathological diagnosis of papillary meningioma was rendered at the time. Because there was no evidence of residual tumor, tumor recurrence, or distant m

Reappraisal of tubulopapillary hidradenoma-like tumor of the mandible: Suggested change in nomenclature to reflect tumor origin.

Several cases of intraosseous mandibular tumors have been reported under the name "tubulopapillary hidradenoma-like tumor of the mandible (TPHLTM)." However, the intraosseous occurrence of sweat gland tumors needs to be reappraised. The aim of this review was to propose a new name for these tumors to reflect the possible tumor origin. In view of the incidence and the tissue of origin, TPHLTM is more likely to be a salivary gland tumor than a sweat gland tumor. Among salivary gland tumors, a recently described salivary neoplasm called "sialadenoma papilliferum-like intraductal papillary tumor (

Unusual Case of a Caruncular Oncocytoma.

Oncocytomas are benign neoplasms that are most often found in the salivary glands and kidneys. Ocular oncocytoma typically present as an asymptomatic dark blue papule on the lacrimal caruncle. Histologically, the tumor is composed of oncocytes, cells notable for eosinophilic cytoplasmic granules representing large quantities of dysfunctional mitochondria. The neoplastic proliferation may be partially or totally encapsulated and may be surrounded by myoepithelial cells. Discussed is the pathophysiology and histopathology of an ocular oncocytoma from the right lacrimal caruncle of a 68-year-old

Poroma: a review of eccrine, apocrine, and malignant forms.

Poroma is a benign adnexal neoplasm of the terminal sweat gland duct. Although poromas have traditionally been thought to originate from the eccrine sweat gland, there have been cases of apocrine etiology as well. Eccrine and apocrine poromas typically present as erythematous or flesh-colored nodules on the palms and soles. As these features overlap with a multitude of differential diagnoses, it is imperative to have a firm understanding of the characteristics that make the diagnosis of poroma. In addition, the malignant counterpart to the poroma, the eccrine porocarcinoma, manifests in a simi

Ductal eccrine carcinoma with squamous differentiation: apropos a case.

Sweat gland carcinomas are rare. Given this, they can pose a diagnostic challenge especially in shave biopsy specimens. We present a case of ductal eccrine carcinoma with extensive squamoid differentiation that was repeatedly misdiagnosed by multiple dermatopathologists as squamous cell carcinoma in the initial few biopsies. As the distinction between these two neoplasms is crucial to patient management, we highlight the histologic features of this uncommon entity to highlight the potential diagnostic pitfalls.

An unusual case of porocarcinoma arising on the scalp of a 22-year-old woman.

Porocarcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that arises from the intraepidermal ductal portion of the eccrine sweat glands. This neoplasm most often presents in elderly individuals on the lower extremities. We present an unusual case of porocarcinoma arising on the scalp of a young patient. To the best of our knowledge, there have been fewer than 20 cases of porocarcinomas arising at this site reported in the literature.

Biology of sweat glands and their disorders. II. Disorders of sweat gland function.

Part I of this article (J Am Acad Dermatol 1989; 20:537-63) focused on normal sweat gland function. Part II provides a discussion of hyperhidrosis and hypohidrosis. Hyperhidrotic disorders affect the palms and soles and the axillae and are associated with previous spinal cord injuries, peripheral neuropathies, brain lesions, intrathoracic neoplasms, systemic illness, and gustatory sweating. Hypohidrotic disorders include anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, hereditary sensory neuropathy, Holmes-Adie syndrome, and generalized anhidrosis.

Salivary Sialadenoma Papilliferum of Buccal Mucosa: A Case Report With Literature Review.

Salivary sialadenoma papilliferum (SP), an infrequent benign salivary gland neoplasm, resembles an uncommon benign tumor of sweat gland origin called syringocystadenoma papilliferum. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of SP of a minor salivary gland, near the parotid gland orifice, in an adult female patient presenting as intraoral growth and extraoral swelling. The present case highlights the SP's clinical and microscopic features, considering other exophytic papilliferous oral lesions and understanding the need to explore the nature and malignant potential of the tumor.

Multifocal extramammary Paget's disease-associated adenocarcinoma: a rare condition of flexoral skin of multiple sites.

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare malignant neoplasm of apocrine sweat glands that is morphologically and histologically identical to Paget disease of the breast. The primary lesion is usually a solitary, well-demarcated, erythematous, scaly plaque that may contain crust, erosions, or ulcerations. The vulva is the most common site, but any area containing apocrine sweat glands may be involved. We present a case of triple extramammary Paget disease of the groin and bilateral axillae in a diabetic patient whose axillary lesions appeared consistent with acanthosis nigricans. This case d
