Relationship of sympathetic nervous system tone and blood pressure.

Plasma concentrations of norepinephrine (NE) appear to reflect sympathetic nervous system (SNS) tone. Plasma NE increases substantially when the SNS is stressed by acute postural change or physical exercise. Standing up from the recumbent position elevates NE by about 90% in healthy normotensive and hypertensive subjects. Although a primary role of the SNS is the maintenance and stabilization of blood pressure, there does not seem to be a direct relationship between plasma levels of NE and blood pressure. Patients with essential hypertension cannot be differentiated from normotensive subjects

The sympathetic nervous system in normotensive and hypertensive pregnancies.

Pregnancy is associated with significant physiological adaptations that facilitate optimal foetal development and growth. Among the most notable changes in healthy pregnancies are increases in plasma volume, cardiac output, and sympathetic nervous system activity, alongside a reduction in total peripheral resistance. Normotensive pregnancies are among the few physiological states in which elevated sympathetic activity is considered normal and beneficial. However, the underlying mechanisms that reconcile this increase in SNA with the concomitant decrease in blood pressure remain incompletely un

The sympathetic nervous system in hypertension: back to the future?

The seventeenth century London neuroanatomical school headed by Thomas Willis published the first images of the sympathetic nervous system. Nineteenth century European physiologists characterised these as the "pressor nerves". Von Euler's demonstration that the sympathetic transmitter was norepinephrine brought the field into the modern era. Sympathetic nervous system responses are regionally differentiated; human regional sympathetic activity is best studied by recording from postganglionic sympathetic efferents directed to the skeletal muscle vasculature (clinical microneurography) and by me

Guidelines on surgery of the thoracic sympathetic nervous system.

Thoracic sympathetic nervous system (TSNS) surgery has increased in importance in the last few years, generating great expectations among the general population and the scientific community. This has been due to the excellent results obtained by videothoracoscopy-assisted thoracic sympathectomy in the treatment of essential hyperhidrosis and other TSNS disorders. This minimally invasive surgical technique has been shown to be effective, and with a low morbidity it is accepted as one of the best therapeutic options for the treatment of palmar and bilateral axillary hyperhidrosis and the number

Modulation of dental inflammation by the sympathetic nervous system.

Recent findings have indicated that immune responses are subjected to modulation by the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Moreover, the findings show that the SNS inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, while stimulating the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines. The present review is an attempt to summarize the current results on how the SNS affects inflammation in dental tissues. In dental tissues, it has been found that the SNS is significant for recruitment of inflammatory cells such as CD 43+ granulocytes. Sympathetic nerves appear to have an inhibitory effect on osteoc

The sympathetic nervous system and baroreflexes in hypertension and hypotension.

Blood pressure and blood volume are closely regulated by the interrelated actions of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Reflex vasoconstriction caused by parallel SNS and RAAS activation is modulated by two interactive negative feedback systems called baroreflex. The aortic-carotid baroreflex systems respond to momentary changes in systolic blood pressure, adjusting the degree of SNS-dependent peripheral vasoconstriction and cardiac output to allow maintenance of a relatively constant perfusion pressure. Cardiopulmonary baroreflexes respon

The sympathetic nervous system in hypertension and renal disease.

The sympathetic nervous system plays a critical role in the initiation and development of some types of hypertension and renal diseases. In a subgroup of essential hypertension, sympathetic overactivity is implicated in linking insulin resistance, abnormal intracellular calcium handling and high blood pressure. Endothelium-derived autocrine-paracrine factors such as endothelin and nitric oxide, have been shown to influence the sympathetic nervous system, and thus to modify blood pressure and renal function. Although the action of each endothelial factor had been separately examined, the intera

The sympathetic nervous system in clinical and experimental hypertension.

In summary, many lines of evidence indicate that the sympathetic nervous system, via the renal nerves, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of renovascular hypertension in humans and laboratory animals. Patients with established renovascular hypertension have increased sympathetic nervous system activity, as evidenced by increased plasma and urinary norepinephrine levels, elevated excretion of catecholamine metabolites, and an exaggerated depressor response to centrally acting sympatholytic agents. The observation that converting enzyme inhibitors can cause both blood pressure and urina

The sympathetic nervous system and hypertension in primary aldosteronism.

To assess the role of the sympathetic nervous system in mineralocorticoid hypertension in humans, results from 24 patients with aldosterone-producing adenoma were compared with those in 27 appropriately matched essential hypertensive subjects and 26 normotensive subjects. Resting plasma catecholamine levels averaged 292 +/- 140 (SD) pg/ml in patients with aldosterone-producing adenoma, 305 +/- 101 in patients with essential hypertension, and 260 +/- 120 in normotensive subjects; none of the differences among the three groups was significant. With head-up tilt (60 degrees for 10 min) plasma cat

Catecholamines in the sympathetic nervous system of the domestic fowl.

In order to resolve some existing uncertainties regarding the identity of the sympathetic catecholamine neurotransmitter in birds, we have measured endogenous noradrenaline (NA), adrenaline (AD) and dopamine (DA) in various peripheral tissues and in the paravertebral sympathetic chain of the domestic fowl. In all visceral tissues examined - atrium, spleen, mesenteric artery, gizzard, intestine, rectal caecum and kidney--NA concentrations were much higher than those of AD or DA. The ratios of NA:AD:DA were approximately 100:10:1 for all tissues except spleen, in which DA represented about 10% o

Sympathetic nervous systems in chronic cor pulmonale.

Twenty-three patients with chronic respiratory failure and 30 normal subjects were studied to assess the sympathetic nervous activity in chronic hypoxic states, especially in chronic cor pulmonale. Of the 23 patients, 13 had a right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) pattern on the electrocardiogram. Plasma norepinephrine (NE), dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH), cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) and cyclic guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic GMP) concentrations were measured before and after oxygen inhalation. Plasma NE concentrations were 0.57 +/- 0.07 ng/ml in patients with chroni

Central sympathetic nervous system reinforcement in obstructive sleep apnoea.

The available studies on cerebrovascular reactivity and cerebral oxygenation in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients brought conflicting results, yet the overall evidence suggests that resting state cerebral perfusion is diminished in these patients. Interestingly, in a group of healthy professional breath-hold divers who are exercising very long apnoeas - episodes corresponding to the ones observed in patients with OSA - demonstrated that cerebral oxygenation may remain stable at the expense of extreme sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation. In the present review we address several me

Interactions between leptin and the human sympathetic nervous system.

Results from animal experimentation suggest a 2-way interaction between leptin and the sympathetic nervous system, with leptin causing sympathetic activation and conversely, with the sympathetic system exercising regulatory feedback inhibition over leptin release. We have now tested this hypothesis in humans. In the absence of results from leptin infusions, to test for sympathetic stimulation of leptin release, we sought a quantitative naturalistic linkage of sympathetic activity with leptin plasma concentration across a broad range of leptin values in men of widely differing adiposity. Leptin regulates bone formation via the sympathetic nervous system.

We previously showed that leptin inhibits bone formation by an undefined mechanism. Here, we show that hypothalamic leptin-dependent antiosteogenic and anorexigenic networks differ, and that the peripheral mediators of leptin antiosteogenic function appear to be neuronal. Neuropeptides mediating leptin anorexigenic function do not affect bone formation. Leptin deficiency results in low sympathetic tone, and genetic or pharmacological ablation of adrenergic signaling leads to a leptin-resistant high bone mass. beta-adrenergic receptors on osteoblasts regulate their proliferation, and a beta-adr

Sleep apnoea and sympathetic nervous system activity: a review.

A review was made of the literature relating sleep apnoea to sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity, as inferred from catecholamine levels or muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Twenty-four studies were located. Most studies reported an elevation of norepinephrine and MSNA, both during sleep and wakefulness among individuals with sleep apnoea. However, studies rarely controlled for known confounders of sympathetic activity, making the validity of the findings questionable.

[Localized disturbance of autonomic nervous system--reflex sympathetic dystrophy].

Clinical aspects of the reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) are summarized, along with a review of basic works concerning its pathophysiology. RSD is important not only as a cause of limb pain after trauma and other triggers, but also as a cause aggravating the pain which already has an apparent cause, but is disproportionally severe.

The sympathetic-nervous-system defect in primary orthostatic hypotension.

We sought to elucidate further the neurologic defect of idiopathic orthostatic hypotension, which appears to represent two distinct clinical entities. While recumbent, patients with multiple central-nervous-system defects, as well as peripheral autonomic nervous dysfunction, have normal plasma levels of norepinephrine that fail to increase normally after standing or exertion (P less than 0.001 by t-test as compared to controls). While recumbent, patients with peripheral autonomic insufficiency without signs of central-nervous-system defects have low levels of plasma norepinephrine (P less than

Interactions between the sympathetic nervous system and angiotensin system in renovascular hypertension.

Renal artery stenosis especially that due to atherosclerotic peripheral vascular disease is increasing in the population. The role of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system in the pathogenesis of renovascular hypertension is widely accepted. There is increasing recognition of the role of the sympathetic nervous system, from both afferent and efferent signaling pathways, as a contributor to development of hypertension. In this review we briefly summarize the experimental evidence for the respective roles of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system and the sympathetic nervous system as well as
