The lymphocytic infiltrate in ten cases of papular polymorphous light eruption has been studied with monoclonal antibodies. The results show that the infiltrate is mainly formed by T helper-inducer lymphocytes, but T suppressor-cytotoxic cells are also present. Initial data on appearance of OKT6+ cells in the infiltrate are considered.

Four patients with severe contact dermatitis resulting from compositae oleoresin were found to have increased sensitivity to ultraviolet light. All showed a clear reduction of Leu-3a-positive lymphocytes (T helper/inducer cells) and cells expressing the Ia phenotype in their blood. The numbers of T suppressor/cytotoxic (Leu 2a) lymphocytes, monocytes and B lymphocytes were within the normal range. Treatment with azathioprine (150 mg daily) improved the eczema. The number of Leu-3a-positive lymphocytes normalized during therapy, but the number of Ia-positive cells did not.

Skin biopsies from four patients with lichen planus were studied using monoclonal antibodies directed against T lymphocytes. Anti-TI and anti-T3 antibodies, which react with all peripheral T cells, stained most cells in the dermal infiltrates. The complexity of immune response-associated cells present in normal human skin was recently redefined as the skin immune system (SIS). The changes occurring in the T-cell subsets during acute symptomatic measles were examined in ten malnourished and 18 well nourished hospitalized children younger than 5 years of age (median age 14 months). A significant decrease in total lymphocyte count was observed, which was due mainly to a decrease in helper/inducer T lymphocytes, whereas the suppressor/cytotoxic T-lymphocyte subset remained unchanged. Using a small sample of peripheral venous blood, the normal range for lymphocyte subpopulations (T-cell, B-cell, T-suppressor cell, and T-helper cell) was defined in non-infected preterm and term infants. Blood lymphocytes were determined from 21 patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a cross-sectional study with 5 monoclonal antibodies (MAb) of the BL-series. 7 patients were examined with the same MAb over a time period of 14 weeks before and after a prednisolone-pulse therapy. Production of interferon (IFN)-gamma was investigated in human peripheral lymphocytes stimulated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Lymphocytes obtained from non-immune individuals produced no IFN. To ascertain whether abnormalities of circulating T-cell subsets are a cause or effect of primary cirrhosis, we analyzed peripheral blood lymphocytes from 44 patients at various stages of disease. The percentages of total T cells and helper/inducer cells were normal in early disease whereas the percentage of suppressor/inducer cells was increased. Immunological alterations have been implicated in the etiopathogenesis of vitiligo. The aim of this study was to determine peripheral lymphocyte subpopulations and interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) in patients with vitiligo. Forty-five vitiligo patients (24 female, 21 male) and 34 healthy controls (11 female, 23 male) were included into the study. Renal failure due to combined acute interstitial nephritis and minimal-change glomerulopathy is reported in two patients after fenoprofen therapy. In the interstitial infiltrates, T lymphocytes predominated over B lymphocytes in a ratio of four to one. The majority of B lymphocytes present were IgE-bearing cells. The mononuclear cell infiltrate in benign and malignant breast tissue was studied using monoclonal antibodies with an immunoenzymatic technique. Infiltrating duct carcinomas contained a mononuclear cell infiltrate made up mostly of T lymphocytes, with minor B-cell and macrophage populations.
