Dementia is a common illness that is increasing in frequency and set to challenge the resources and expertise of health and social care services over the coming years. Increasingly, there has been interest in the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), as they are both common and associated with a range of negative outcomes. BPSD are associated with the admission of people with dementia to care homes. Limited resources and lack of knowledge in permanent care settings often lead to BPSD being managed with antipsychotic medications, which are associated with sign

The primary impairments associated with Parkinson's disease occur in combination with the secondary, preventable effects of immobility. A community-based fitness program may help increase activity and maintain function in people in the early or middle stages of the disease. This article describes a unique program designed to reduce fall risk and promote independent exercise for people with Parkinson's disease. Two 66-year-old males, both community ambulators and in early or middle stages of Parkinson's disease, participated in 3 months of various physical activities. Group balance classes were

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP), including osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), fibromyalgia, and chronic low back pain (cLBP), contributes substantially to disability and reduced quality of life. Contemporary pain science supports biopsychosocial, multimodal management addressing nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic mechanisms. Tai Chi is a multicomponent mind-body exercise integrating gentle movement, breathing, relaxation, balance, and attentional focus. This narrative review summarizes approximately 20 years of research on Tai Chi for CMP and considers

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders have become a widespread public health challenge closely linked to cognitive decline, immune dysfunction, and chronic diseases. While pharmacological and cognitive-behavioral therapies remain standard treatments, their limitations-such as dependency and relapse-necessitate effective, low-risk alternatives. Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise emphasizing mindfulness, breathing, and gentle movement, has been increasingly recognized for its potential to enhance sleep quality. However, global research in this area remains scattered and lacks integrative sy

INTRODUCTION: Tai Chi and Qigong (TCQ) are mind-body practices widely recognized for their psychological benefits; however, the underlying physiological mechanisms remain less clearly defined. Time-domain heart rate variability (HRV) indices, specifically standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) and root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), serve as valuable markers of autonomic function. This meta-analysis quantified the effects of TCQ on these HRV parameters and examined whether baseline autonomic function and intervention complexity influenced outcomes.
METHODS: Fo

BACKGROUND: Wheelchair Tai Chi (WCTC) has been proved to have benefits for the brain and motor system of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. However, the characteristics of corticomuscular coupling during WCTC are scarcely known. We aimed to investigate changes following SCI on corticomuscular coupling, and further compare the coupling characteristics of WCTC with aerobic exercise in SCI patients.
METHODS: A total of 15 SCI patients and 25 healthy controls were recruited. The patients had to perform aerobic exercise and WCTC, while healthy controls needed to complete a set of WCTC. The partici

Cardiovascular disease has remained the top contributor to global mortality for decades, necessitating research into the most effective methods of its prevention and treatment. Simultaneous with an immense amount of discovery and innovation in the field of cardiology, certain therapies with traditional Chinese origins have become progressively more popular in the West in recent decades. Specifically, ancient meditative mind-body practices such as Qigong and Tai Chi may lower cardiovascular disease risk and severity through a focus on movement and meditation. Such practices are generally low-co

AIMS: Tai Chi is a promising exercise option in cardiac rehabilitation to manage coronary heart disease (CHD). Increasing attention was paid on home-based cardiac rehabilitation to improve participation rate, but no study has yet emphasized the effect of home-based Tai Chi. A single-blinded randomized controlled trial is used to examine the effects of a group- plus home-based Tai Chi program on functional health.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Ninety-eight community-dwelling patients with CHD were randomly assigned to the Tai Chi and control groups. Participants in the Tai Chi group attended 6-week gro

Many people with depression or anxiety turn to nonpharmacologic and nonconventional interventions, including exercise, yoga, meditation, tai chi, or qi gong. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews have shown that these interventions can improve symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders. As an adjunctive treatment, exercise seems most helpful for treatment-resistant depression, unipolar depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Yoga as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy shows positive effects, particularly for depression. As an adjunctive therapy, it facilitates treatment of anxiety disord

BACKGROUND: The potential for acute exercise to enhance attention has been discussed in the literature. However, the neural mechanisms by which acute exercise affects attention remain elusive.
METHOD: In this study, we first identified an optimized acute Tai Chi Chuan (ATCC) exercise protocol that enhances sustained attention performance and then aimed to determine the neural substrates of exercise-enhanced attention. Reaction time (RT) from the psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) was used to evaluate sustained attention. In Experiment 1, improvements in RTs were compared among six different exe
