[The isolation of tick-borne encephalitis virus strains and the determination of the scope of immune stratification among the population and the domestic animals on the northern Russian plain].

Between 1986 and 1987 the authors conducted virological survey of 689 Ixodes persulcatus and 420 mouse-like and insectivorous rodents at the territory of Arkhangelsk Province and the Republic of Komi. A total of 8 strains of tick-borne encephalitis virus were isolated. Out of them 3 strains were isolated from small mammalians (2 from Clethrionomys glareolus, 1 from Microtus oeconomus) at the southeastern areas of Arkhangelsk Province within the middle taiga subarea, 5 strains were isolated from I. persulcatus (the rate of infection was 1.25 per cent) gathered in the southeastern Komi within th

[Risk of human infection with Ixodes tick-borne relapsing fever in different regional subzones of the Perm region].

Serological and epidemiological surveys covered 2407 persons in 20 populated localities situated in all large geographical and regional subdivisions (subzones) in the Perm Region. Indirect immunofluorescence tests revealed serum immunoglobulins to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. Antibodies in 1:40 or higher dilution were found in nearly 5 to 11% of the dwellers of localities in the subzones of south taiga, coniferous broad-leaved forests, and forest steppe; about 3-7% and 1-6% of them were present in the populations of mountain and middle taigas, respectively. According to the frequency of ti

[Ecological and epizootic characteristics of various zonal types of natural reservoirs of alveococcosis in the Omsk region].

Natural foci of alveococcis of various zonal types were found in the Omsk region. The final pathogen hosts are red (aspen and birch forests, northern and southern forest-steppe, steppe) and corsac (southern forest-steppe and steppe) foxes and, perhaps, wolves (southern taiga). There are intermediate hosts, that are small mammals of 10 species, among which Clethrionomys voles (northern redbacked, large-toothed redbacked, and bank voles in the southern taiga; northern redbacked voles in the aspen and birch forests and northern forest-steppe), root ones (in the northern and southern forest-steppe

[Fatal tick-borne encephalitis].

The number of cases with tick-borne encephalitis in Europe has increased particularly in the 1990's, and new regions have become endemic. Ixodes persulcatus, i.e. the taiga tick, is found on the west coast of Finland along the Närpiö-Simo axis. This tick has not been encountered in other parts of Western Europe. In Kokkola archipelago it transmits the Siberian subtype of tick-borne encephalitis virus. We describe the first and fatal case of tick-borne encephalitis transmitted by the "taiga tick" in Finland.

Water relations and photosynthetic performance in Larix sibirica growing in the forest-steppe ecotone of northern Mongolia.

Shoot water relations were studied in Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) trees growing at the borderline between taiga and steppe in northern Mongolia. Larix sibirica is the main tree species in these forests covering 80% of Mongolia's forested area. Minimum shoot water potentials (Psi(m)) close to the point of zero turgor (Psi(0)) repeatedly recorded throughout the growing season suggest that the water relations in L. sibirica were often critical. The Psi(m) varied in close relation to the atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, whereas Psi(0) was correlated with monthly precipitation. Young

Seasonal Activity of Adult Ticks Ixodes persulcatus (Acari, Ixodidae) in the North-West of the Distribution Area.

The taiga tick Ixodes persulcatus (Schulze, 1930) (Acari, Ixodidae) is the main vector of the tick-borne encephalitis virus and one of the most widespread species of ixodid ticks in the Palaearctic. In this paper, we present long-term data on the seasonal activity of adult ticks in the north-west of their distribution. The seasonal activity of Ixodes persulcatus was studied from 1982 to 1990 and from 2012 to 2023 in the middle taiga subzone of Karelia (N62.0697, E33.961). In the study area, adult ticks I. persulcatus demonstrate a pronounced spring-summer activity with a unimodal curve of abun

Distribution and prevalence of Taenia hydatigena, Taenia multiceps, and Mesocestoides spp. in Mongolian sheepdogs.

Gastrointestinal parasite infections in livestock and companion animals in Mongolia have not been investigated sufficiently. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of cyclophyllid cestodes (Taeniidae and Mesocestoididae) in Mongolian sheepdogs using copro-DNA analysis. Sheepdog fecal samples (n = 1242) were collected from five ecological zones (mountain taiga, forest-steppe, steppe, desert-steppe, and desert) and four geographical regions (Western, Khangai, Central, and Eastern) within 20 of the country's 21 provinces. Among the 1242 samples, 201 (16.2%) tested positive for mitochondrial

[Comparative characterization of a risk for infection with tick-borne encephalitis in the foci with different regional confinement].

A comparative study of the foci of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has revealed that the infectivity of vectors taiga ticks (Ixodes persulcatus) plays the leading role in the formation of foci with the highest epidemic activity (including forest steppe ones). The morbidity rates in each regional focus are directly related to the number of tick-bitten persons and to the quantity of the vector.

[Genetic diversity of the tick-borne encephalitis virus in Ixodes persulcatus ticks in northeastern European Russia].

The genetic diversity of the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in the PCR-positive Taiga ticks collected in the Republic of Komi in 2010 was evaluated. The analyses of nucleotide sequences of the 5'-NCR fragments of viral genome from ticks had shown that 13 isolates of TBEV from 16 sequencing variants were represented by the highly pathogenic Far Eastern genotype of the TBEV and only 3 isolates were identified as the Siberian genotype of TBEV. The nucleotide sequences of 5'-NCR of viral genome strongly varied variable in individual ticks. Variability for the A1 element has been observed in

Forest topsoil salvage and placement threshold depths for boreal forest revegetation as influenced by ecosite and substrate texture.

Forest topsoil is a critical source of native vegetative propagules and seeds for boreal forest land reclamation. However, optimal handling practices for this material and its interactions with underlying substrates remain poorly defined. This field study investigated effects of operational topsoil salvage and placement depths on native plant establishment, accounting for site conditions, substrate type, ecosite characteristics, and local climate. We evaluated varying salvage and placement depths across mineral and peat-mineral mix substrates. Shallow salvage (10 cm) maximized plant species ri

A nearly complete database on the records and ecology of the rarest boreal tiger moth from 1840s to 2020.

Global environmental changes may cause dramatic insect declines but over century-long time series of certain species' records are rarely available for scientific research. The Menetries' Tiger Moth (Arctia menetriesii) appears to be the most enigmatic example among boreal insects. Although it occurs throughout the entire Eurasian taiga biome, it is so rare that less than 100 specimens were recorded since its original description in 1846. Here, we present the database, which contains nearly all available information on the species' records collected from 1840s to 2020. The data on A. menetriesi

Poleward migration of tropical cyclones induced severe disturbance of boreal forest above 50°.

With global warming, tropical cyclones (TCs) are moving to northern latitudes with devastating effects on boreal forests and significant ecological and socioeconomic consequences in the northern hemisphere. Recently, TCs disturbances have been documented in the northern temperate and even the southern boreal forest zone. Here we report and quantify the impact of TC Lingling (2019), which damaged the boreal forests >50° latitude in a remote area of Sakhalin Island, Northeast Asia. A multi-step algorithm was used to identify disturbed forested areas together with Sentinel-2 imagery to recognize

Cancer incidence in the native peoples of far eastern Siberia.

Cancer incidence rates were examined in the native peoples of the far north-east of Siberia for the years 1977-1988. Particularly high rates of cancers of the stomach, lung, oesophagus and cervix were observed. For stomach cancer, the male and female age-standardized (to the world population) rates were 103.9 per 100,000 and 50.0 per 100,000 respectively. The corresponding lung cancer rates were 109.4 and 45.7, and for oesophageal cancer 83.9 and 35.0. The age-standardized cervical cancer rate was 38.5 per 100,000. Rates of these cancers were considerably higher than in native Alaskan peoples,

Northward expansion of high-stature vegetation reveals net surface-cooling feedbacks in the majority of Canadian Boreal-Tundra ecozones.

Climate warming has driven widespread shrub and tree expansion across the Canadian boreal-tundra. This is widely expected to amplify surface warming. However, whether this expectation is supported by observations remains unresolved. Here we show, using satellite observations of vegetation change alongside climate and surface-energy data from 1986 to 2023, that about 70% of central and northern Canadian ecozones exhibit net surface cooling tendencies, driven by interactions between vegetation change and the environment that reduce the energy available to warm the land surface ( -0.003 to  -0.00

Overview of primary biological aerosol particles from a Chinese boreal forest: Insight into morphology, size, and mixing state at microscopic scale.

Biological aerosols play an important role in atmospheric chemistry, clouds, climate, and public health. Here, we studied the morphology and composition of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) collected in the Lesser Khingan Mountain boreal forest of China in summertime using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). C, N, O, P, K, and Si were detected in most of the PBAPs, and P represented a major marker to discriminate the PBAPs. Of all detected particles >100 nm in diameter, 13% by number were identified as PBAPs. We found that one type of PBAPs
