The effect of proximal tibial corrective osteotomy on menisci, tibia and tarsal bones: a finite element model study of tibia vara.

BACKGROUND: Proximal tibial open wedge osteotomy (PTO) is a corrective operation used in the surgery of lower extremities and is applied to patients with varus deformities for sufficient correction. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the PTO can achieve decreased stress-bearing on the tibia and tarsal bones in addition to correcting the mechanical axis of the lower limb in patients with tibia vara. METHODS: Three-dimensional (3D) solid modelling of the lower extremity was carried out using computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR)-containing images of all of the bony elem

Bone density comparison of selected carpal and tarsal bones: validation for their use in compression fracture fixation studies of scaphoid screws.

INTRODUCTION: To determine if trabecular, total and cortical bone densities of the capitate, navicular, cuboid, and first cuneiform were equivalent to those of the scaphoid, such that these bones could be used in place of the scaphoid in evaluating new headless scaphoid compression screws. METHODS: Fifty scaphoids, capitates, naviculars, cuboids, and first cuneiforms were harvested from fresh frozen cadavers. The trabecular, total and cortical bone densities were measured using pQCT technology and statistically compared. RESULTS: A paired t comparison between paired scaphoids and capitates s

Calcaneal Lengthening after Tarsal Bone Fusion for Massive Calcaneus Defect Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: Calcaneus defect remains challenging with limited strategies for reconstruction. Current methods, including graft transplantation, substitution, and distraction osteogenesis, showed limited advantages with certain shortcomings. Current calcaneus lengthening for partial calcaneus loss reconstruction requires bone loss of less than 35%. We introduced our combination of tarsal bone fusion and gradual lengthening method in treating massive calcaneus loss. METHODS: From January 2015 to December 2021, tarsal bone fusion and calcaneus gradual lengthening were performed in six patients wi

Carpal and tarsal bone development is highly sensitive to three antiproliferative teratogens in mice.

When pregnant mice were given small doses of teratogens (cytosine arabinoside, mitomycin C, or busulfan) that did not induce anomalies of any other organs, a high incidence of carpal and tarsal bone anomalies still occurred. The carpal and tarsal bones may be used as a sensitive target for teratogenicity testing.

Carpal and tarsal bone anomalies in mice induced by maternal treatment of Ara-C.

Pregnant mice of the Jcl:ICR strain were injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of 5 mg/kg of cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) on dg 10.5. Skeletal changes of the forepaw and hindpaw were evaluated in the offspring on the 15th or 24th postnatal day. Various anomalies of carpal and tarsal bones such as fusion, absence, and deformation occurred at high incidence at a dose that produced digital anomalies. Almost all newborns with Ara-C-induced digital anomalies (oligodactyly or polydactyly) had anomalies of carpal or tarsal bones in the particular paw, while anomalies of carpal or tarsal bones

Computed tomography identifies the proximodorsomedial subchondral bone of equine central tarsal bones as a predilection site for sclerosis, demineralisation and associated fractures.

BACKGROUND: The distribution pattern of central tarsal bone (CTB) changes has not been described, except for slab- and dorsomedial-plantarolateral fractures. OBJECTIVES: To describe CTB changes in CT and document their distribution and associations. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Standing and recumbent tarsal CT studies from 94 clinical cases were retrospectively evaluated. General case information, degree of sclerosis (none-severe), lesions (demineralisation, cystoid, fissure/fracture) and their location were recorded, dividing CTBs into 8 regions. RESULTS: Eighty five

An autosomal dominant syndrome of short stature with mesomelic shortness of limbs, abnormal carpal and tarsal bones, hypoplastic middle phalanges, and bipartite calcanei.

This paper describes seven persons in a family affected with an autosomal dominant syndrome of short stature with mesomelic shortness of upper and lower limbs, abnormal carpal and tarsal bones, hypoplastic or absent middle phalanges of hands and feet, and delayed coalescence of bipartite calcanei. All affected relatives are of normal intelligence, are free of eye problems, and have a normal skull, spine, shoulders, and hips. The digits of the hands and feet are short, broad, and angulated. The hypoplastic or absent middle phalanges effectively result in one interphalangeal joint for each digit

Canine ex vivo tarsal arthrodesis: fixation by using a new bone tissue glue.

INTRODUCTION: Arthrodesis, performed as a salvage surgical procedure to treat intractable joint conditions in dogs and cats, is associated with a high incidence of complications intra and postoperative, proving the need for improved and new techniques in arthrodesis surgery. Adding a new resorbable bone glue to the arthrodesis could potentially add fixation strength and lower complications. The objectives of this experimental ex vivo biomechanical study were therefore to develop a biomechanical test model of partial tarsal arthrodesis and to determine whether the new resorbable bone glue (phos

Radiological tarsal bone morphology in adolescent age of congenital clubfeet treated with the Ponseti method.

BACKGROUND: Major abnormalities of tarsal bone shape after surgical clubfoot treatment are well known from the literature. The Ponseti method has gained widespread acceptance in primary treatment of congenital clubfeet. Despite the longtime experience, data regarding the development of tarsal bones after this treatment are still rare. The aim of the study was therefore to evaluate radiographic parameters describing tarsal bone shape of clubfeet after Ponseti treatment and compare them to age-matched healthy feet. METHODS: Twenty two consecutive severe clubfeet in 14 patients were investigated

Differential diagnosis of carpal and tarsal ankylosis on dry bones: Example from the catacomb of Saints Peter and Marcellinus (Rome, 1st-3rd century AD).

Bone ankylosis is a pathological feature that may occur in many chronic diseases involving joints. In paleopathology, it is therefore challenging to attribute such a change to a specific condition. Here, we illustrate the differential diagnosis by discussing the lesions observed on an incomplete skeleton from the Roman period, recovered from the catacomb of Saints Peter and Marcellinus (Rome, Italy). The skeleton exhibits several bone changes, including ankylosis on both feet and the left hand. The right tarsal fusion is accompanied by soft tissue ossifications involving the plantar aponeurosi

Reconstruction of the Midfoot Using a Free Vascularized Fibular Graft After En Bloc Excision for Giant Cell Tumor of the Tarsal Bones: A Case Report.

We report the case of a 32-year-old Japanese female with a giant cell tumor of bone involving multiple midfoot bones. Giant cell tumors of bone account for approximately 5% of all primary bone tumors and most often arise at the ends of long bones. The small bones, such as those of the hands and feet, are rare sites for giant cell tumors. Giant cell tumors of the small bones tend to exhibit more aggressive clinical behavior than those of the long bones. The present patient underwent en bloc tumor excision involving multiple tarsals and metatarsals. We reconstructed the longitudinal arch of the

Orthoplastic tarsal reconstruction using a chimeric vascularized bone graft in a heavy smoker: a case report.

Vascularized reconstruction of bone defects in the foot after osteomyelitis is a complex procedure that requires an orthoplastic collaboration. This case demonstrates the successful use of a free osteocutaneous fibula flap with a perforator-based skin island to reconstruct the medial midfoot following a late-onset infection after fusion for osteonecrosis. A 63-year-old woman presented after osteonecrosis and failed surgeries, including talonavicular and naviculocuneiform arthrodesis complicated by infection. Given the patient's smoking and infection history, revision using avascular bone graft

Anatomical basis of a pedicled cuboid bone graft based on the lateral tarsal artery for talar avascular necrosis.

PURPOSE: Vascularized pedicled bone-grafting from the cuboid to the talus provides low donor site morbidity and satisfactory outcomes in patients with early-stage talar avascular necrosis. We investigated the anatomy of the rotational vascularized pedicled bone graft from the cuboid. METHODS: 15 embalmed cadaver specimens were perfused with red latex via the popliteal artery. The lateral malleolus was dissected. The course of the lateral tarsal artery and the vascular territory in the cuboid supplied by the lateral tarsal artery were observed. Vessel diameters were measured. RESULTS: The cou
