We present a case of tarsal tunnel syndrome caused by an amyloidoma arising from the talocalcaneal joint in a 64-year-old man with a long history of haemodialysis. He presented with numbness in the medial plantar area of the right foot without any antecedent trauma. The numbness was minimal at rest but gradually worsened, causing difficulty, when walking. Paraesthesia was present on the medial sole of the right foot. A positive Tinel-like sign was noted 2.5 cm below the medial malleolus. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a round lesion, 1 cm in diameter, in the calcaneus, which was hypoi

Subtalar coalitions are a significant cause of morbidity, especially in the pediatric population. Arthrodesis was considered the standard of care, with coalitions involving >50% of the joint until the mid-1990s. Today, some are recommending resection of the coalition first and to save hindfoot arthrodesis as a salvage procedure. As a result, resection of talocalcaneal coalitions is becoming more common, and optimizing the surgical technique is a necessity in the field of orthopedics. We present a technique to optimize surgical resection of talocalcaneal coalitions by using Kirschner wires inse

This study has been carried out to determine the effect of neutral position, hyperextension and hyperflexion of the tarsal joint on the tibial nerve, motor action potential latency and tarsal canal compartment pressure in dogs with the aid of electrophysiological and anatomical methods. Totally twenty healthy mongrel dogs were used. Latency of motor nerve action potential (MNAPL) studies of tibial nerve via surface stimulating and needle recording electrodes was performed on right hind limbs of all the dogs. The compartment pressures of the tarsal canal with the pressure transducer were determ

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Osteoarthrosis (OA) in the distal tarsal joints, bone spavin, is a well known condition which is common in Icelandic horses age 6-12 years.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the nature, location and age of appearance of early radiographic and histological changes in the centrodistal tarsal joint (CD) of young Icelandic horses.
METHODS: Slab sections from the CD of young Icelandic horses were examined by high detail radiography (age 6 months to 6 years, n = 111) and histology (age 6 months to 4 years, n = 82) to detect and describe the early changes indicative of OA. Hors

OBJECTIVE: Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction, piriformis syndrome (PFS) and tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) produce symptoms similar to lumbar degenerative disease (LDD). Patients who have these diseases plus LDD sometimes experience residual symptoms after surgery for LDD. We therefore assessed the results of treatment of SIJ dysfunction, PFS and TTS associated with LDD.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We assessed 25 patients who underwent surgery for LDD and were affected with SIJ dysfunction (12 patients), PFS (7 patients) or TTS (6 patients). SIJ dysfunction was treated with rest, drugs, pelvic band

The authors are going to report on the case of a 32-year-old female patient suffering from a non-dislocated external ankle fracture which was submitted to conservative treatment. This treatment was complicated by the occurrence of a tarsal tunnel syndrome which required surgical revision. The cause of this complication may be seen in the development of a minor local hematoma in the course of the tibial nerve as well as in a convolution of varicose veins located in the region of the internal ankle. By describing this case the authors wish to point out that development of a tarsal tunnel syndrom

BACKGROUND: Although regular factor replacement can reduce the incidence of joint bleeds and slow down the development of haemophilic arthropathy, the ankle joint remains particularly vulnerable even in children with haemophilia on primary or secondary prophylaxis and is now the primary joint affected. The heterogeneity in the pathoaetiology of haemophilic ankle arthropathy means that the functional consequences of early stage of ankle arthropathy are difficult to define as early morphological and structural changes can be observed in clinically asymptomatic ankles. In this context, understand

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The effect of palmar osteochondral disease lesions on performance of Thoroughbred (TB) racehorses is unclear. There is a need to describe patterns of radiopharmaceutical uptake (IRU) in fetlock joints of TB racehorses and to evaluate post scintigraphy performance.
HYPOTHESES: IRU in the metacarpal (MC) and metatarsal (MT) condyles is more common than IRU in the parasagittal grooves and is associated with poorer post diagnosis performance than controls.
METHODS: Location of IRU within the fetlock region was identified and graded subjectively in TB racehorses. Per

A case of tarsal tunnel syndrome following a reconstructive procedure with repair of chronic ankle instability using periosteal flap is reported. Two pathogenetic factors have to be discussed as possible causes for this complication. Dissection of the medial retinaculum was performed. With this procedure the patient is complaints could be removed.

The aim of the study was to assess the influence of high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) on vein diameter and on body surface temperature changes in the tarsal joint area in a group of clinically healthy racehorses. The hypothesis of the study was that HILT increases vein diameter and body surface temperature in healthy tissue. The study involved 16 Thoroughbreds being subjected to ultrasonographic examination to assess changes of diameter of the cranial branch of the medial saphenous vein and thermographic examination to indicate temperature change of the dorsal surface of the tarsal joint, ju

BACKGROUND: Contracted valgus flat foot in the adolescent is frequently caused by tarsal synostosis or synchondrosis. These synostoses are prevalently symptomatic during adolescence, when by ossifying they block the subtalar joint in valgus. Careful and detailed examinations might reveal additional abnormalities.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old boy of Austrian origin presented with contracted valgus foot associated with tarsal hypomobility and pain. Talonavicular synostosis with ball and socket ankle joint was detected via lateral radiographs and 3 DCT scan. Preoperative laboratory investiga

The data from 35 consecutive patients with hallux valgus undergoing triplane arthrodesis at the first tarsal metatarsal joint were studied to determine the amount of first metatarsal frontal plane rotation (supination) needed to anatomically align the first metatarsal phalangeal joint on an anterior posterior radiograph without soft tissue balancing at the first metatarsal phalangeal joint. Radiographs were measured both pre- and postoperatively to assess the 1-2 intermetatarsal angle, hallux abductus angle, and tibial sesamoid position (TSP). The mean amount of varus (supination) rotation per

Associated coalitions of tarsal bones, either unilateral or bilateral, may be classified to developmental or syndromic types. There are no specific patterns for osseous or nonosseous configurations of associated tarsal coalitions. Associated developmental tarsal coalitions can be categorized into dual, threefold, massive, and total tarsal coalitions according to the number and sites of the involved joints. Dual coalitions are more common than other types. Among dual tarsal coalitions, the most frequent combination is talocalcaneal (TC) and calcaneonavicular coalitions, also referred to as doub

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis (AAA) is a standard procedure for end-stage osteoarthritis of the ankle. One of the main concerns after AAA remains the development of secondary osteoarthritis in the subtalar and tarsal joints in the long term. This development is thought to be due to a compensatory increased mobility and therefore increased load on the adjacent joints. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze the residual motion of the tarsal joints, the load distribution under the foot, and the influence of tarsal joint motion on load distribution and gait pattern after AAA.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the arthroscopically accessible anatomy of the tarsal collateral ligaments in the horse.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study.
ANIMALS: Cadaveric equine hind limbs (n = 24) obtained from horses without tarsal disease.
METHODS: Two pairs of tarsal joints were used to obtain silicone models of the tarsocrural joint and dissect the tarsal collateral ligaments (CLs). Ten pairs of tarsocrural joints had arthroscopic exploration and the accessible parts of the tarsal CLs were marked with an arthroscopic hook knife. Subsequently, the limbs were dissected and the marked positions

A tarsal coalition is an aberrant union between 2 or more tarsal bones and can be classified as osseous (synostosis) or nonosseous (cartilaginous [synchondrosis] or fibrous [syndesmosis]). This union may be complete or partial and the joints in the hindfoot and midfoot are most commonly affected. The resulting abnormal articulation presents as a noncorrectable flat foot, usually during adolescence, leading to accelerated degeneration within adjacent joints. An understanding of the condition and presenting symptoms enable the clinician to correctly diagnose and initiate appropriate treatment. T

Fifty-two patients with ankle arthrodesis were reviewed after an average follow-up of 7 years with a range between 2 and 22 years. Two-thirds of the patients had good results and 1 in 4 had fair results. In 4 cases there were bad results. Thirty-seven patients could walk without any limitation thanks to mobility of the mid-tarsal joint. Most of the patients developed radiological arthrosis of the subtalar joint with limited movement in 29 instances. In contrast, hypermobility of the mid-tarsal joint was present in almost half of the cases. Good functional results were related to the preservati
