Evaluating the suitability of the Perceive, Recall, Plan and Perform System of Task Analysis (PRPP-A) for assessing work-related cognitive difficulties in women after breast cancer: A comparison with Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB).

INTRODUCTION: An increasing number of working-age women are diagnosed with breast cancer, making it critical to understand cognitive difficulties that may affect their work performance. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the suitability of the Perceive, Recall, Plan and Perform System of Task Analysis Assessment (PRPP-A) for occupational therapists assessing work performance after breast cancer, by examining its alignment with domain-specific cognitive measures obtained from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) and its capacity to identify cognitive difficulties rel

Effects of task difficulty on performance and event-related bradycardia during preparation for action.

The slowing of heart rate prior to movement onset has been presented as a marker of task-related cognitive processing and linked with performance accuracy. Here we examined this event-related bradycardia and task performance as a function of task difficulty. Forty experienced golfers completed a series of golf putting conditions that manipulated task difficulty by varying target distance, target size, and surface contour. Performance was measured by the number of holed putts and finishing distance from the hole. Physiological activity was recorded throughout. Analyses confirmed that performanc

Is a structured work task application for the assessment of work performance in a constructed environment, useful for patients with attention deficits?

BACKGROUND: The purpose of our study was to develop a Structured Work Task application for the Assessment of Work Performance for patients with attention deficits. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We developed a computer-based registration task titled the Attention-demanding Registration Task. It had a structured administrative procedure with additional scoring regarding time and accuracy, also linked to the original scoring of the Assessment of Work Performance. We evaluated the Attention-demanding Registration Task for content validity. Furthermore, we investigated it concerning sensitivity and specif

The non-unitary nature of information preference.

Factors affecting information-seeking behaviour can be task-endogenous (e.g., probability of winning a gamble), or task-exogenous (e.g., personality trait measures). Various task-endogenous factors affecting non-instrumental information-seeking behaviour have been identified, but it is unclear how task-exogenous factors affect such behaviour, and if they interact with task-endogenous factors. In an online information seeking experiment (N = 279), we focus on the role that outcome probability, as a task-endogenous factor, has on information preferences. We find reliable preference for advance i

Pacing strategies during a cycling time trial with simulated headwinds and tailwinds.

The aims of this study were to examine the effects of one self-selected and two enforced pacing strategies (constant and variable power output) on cycling performance during a time trial in which variable wind conditions were simulated. Seven male cyclists rode their own bicycles on a Computrainer cycle ergometer, which was programmed to simulate a 16.1 km time trial on a flat course with a 8.05 km h(-1) headwind in the first half of the race and a 8.05 km h(-1) tailwind in the second half of the race. Subjects rode an initial time trial (ITT) at a self-selected pace to the best of their abili

Minerals: exercise performance and supplementation in athletes.

This paper examines whether mineral supplements are necessary for athletes, and whether these supplements will enhance performance. Macrominerals (calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus) and trace minerals (zinc, copper, selenium, chromium, and iron) are described. Calcium supplements are important for the health of bones. Athletes tend to have enhanced calcium status as assessed by bone mineral density, with the notable exception of female amenorrhoeic athletes. Magnesium status is adequate for most athletes, and there is no evidence that magnesium supplements can enhance performance. Phosphorus

'I need a break': the effect of choice of rest break duration on vigilance.

Vigilance is the ability to sustain attention for an extended period of time and to respond to infrequently occurring critical signals. One of the most replicable findings within the vigilance literature is the performance decrement; the decline in performance as time on task increases. In an effort to attenuate the decrement, and decrease the workload and stress associated with vigilance, the present study investigated the role of choice of rest break duration on vigilance performance, perceived workload, and stress. Participants were assigned to one of three conditions: (1) choice condition,

Circadian rhythms, sleep deprivation, and human performance.

Much of the current science on, and mathematical modeling of, dynamic changes in human performance within and between days is dominated by the two-process model of sleep-wake regulation, which posits a neurobiological drive for sleep that varies homeostatically (increasing as a saturating exponential during wakefulness and decreasing in a like manner during sleep), and a circadian process that neurobiologically modulates both the homeostatic drive for sleep and waking alertness and performance. Endogenous circadian rhythms in neurobehavioral functions, including physiological alertness and cog

Inhibitory effect of an intellectual task on breathing after voluntary hyperventilation.

We investigated the effects of an intellectual task on posthyperventilation (PHV) breathing by using a video game. Eight normal subjects were placed in a supine positions. The game task by itself led to increase ventilation compared with the control tasks via an increase in the average inspiratory flow rate (P < 0.01) and the respiratory frequency (P < 0.001). After hypocapnic voluntary hyperventilation (VHV), the task led to a decrease in the 1-min PHV breathing level compared with the control tasks after VHV [after VHV, first 60 s average minute ventilation while watching television and whil

Rough Auditory Alarms Mitigate Inattentional Deafness During Piloting-Like Task.

ObjectiveTo assess the efficiency of rough auditory alarms in capturing attention during a piloting-like task under high mental workload that may induce inattentional deafness.BackgroundUnder high mental workload and stress, pilots may experience inattentional deafness, leading them to miss critical auditory warnings. This results from early inhibition of the primary auditory cortex by prefrontal areas, shifting auditory processing oscillations from gamma to alpha frequencies. Recent studies suggest that roughness-an auditory perceptual feature of natural alarm signals generated by amplitude-m

Self-related objects increase alertness and orient attention through top-down saliency.

Attention is influenced by information about relationships between ourselves and the objects around us. Self-related objects can either facilitate or disrupt task performance, creating a challenge for identifying the precise nature of the influence of self-relatedness on attention. To address this challenge, we measured different components of attention (alertness and orienting) in the presence of self-related objects using a revised attention network task (ANT). In a self-association task, participants first learned colour-person associations and then carried out a colour-person matching task

Towards the Objective Identification of the Presence of Pain Based on Electroencephalography Signals' Analysis: A Proof-of-Concept.

This proof-of-concept study explores the potential of developing objective pain identification based on the analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Data were collected from participants living with chronic fibromyalgia pain (n = 4) and from healthy volunteers (n = 7) submitted to experimental pain by the application of capsaicin cream (1%) on the right upper trapezius. This data collection was conducted in two parts: (1) baseline measures including pain intensity and EEG signals, with the participant at rest; (2) active measures collected under the execution of a visuo-motor task, in

Acute pain impairs sustained attention.

Pain affects the lives of many individuals by creating physical, psychological, and economic burdens. A critical psychological factor negatively affected by pain is one's ability to sustain attention. In order to better understand the effect of pain on sustained attention we conducted three experiments utilizing the psychomotor vigilance task, thought probes, and pupillometry. In Experiment 1, participants in acute pain exhibited overall poorer task performance. However, this effect was localized to the relative frequency and duration of the participants' slowest responses with their faster re

How do the elderly negotiate stairs?

Stair navigation, particularly stair descent, is an extremely challenging and dangerous locomotor task, yet studies suggest that most elderly are unlikely to move to new residences in order to avoid this challenge. The knee and ankle are the key joints where adequate strength and power are required for safe stair descent, and it is not yet clear if sarcopenia in the elderly is likely to result in residual strength below that which is required for successful stair performance. Sensory cues are also critical, and the lack of literature on the specific roles of the various intrinsic and extrinsic

How virtual and mechanical coupling impact bimanual tracking.

Bilateral training systems look to promote the paretic hand's use in individuals with hemiplegia. Although this is normally achieved using mechanical coupling (i.e., a physical connection between the hands), a virtual reality system relying on virtual coupling (i.e., through a shared virtual object) would be simpler to use and prevent slacking. However, it is not clear whether different coupling modes differently impact task performance and effort distribution between the hands. We explored how 18 healthy right-handed participants changed their motor behaviors in response to the uninstructed a

Development of hand-arm bimanual intensive training (HABIT) for improving bimanual coordination in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

Constraint-induced (CI) movement therapy is a physical intervention that has been receiving increasing attention in pediatric rehabilitation. So far, the evidence suggests that practice associated with CI therapy may improve impaired unimanual hand function in some children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). However, CI therapy has several important limitations. Most importantly, children with hemiplegia have impairments in bimanual coordination beyond their unilateral impairments. Thus, an intervention approach to increase functional independence during activities of daily living by using b

Formal responsibility and task execution: the importance of modelling task delegation in FRAM to optimise the identification of potential improvement strategies.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how task delegation for perioperative anticoagulation management is reported in protocols and daily practice, and how this translates to additional information in work-as-imagined and work-as-done using FRAM to identify improvement possibilities. METHODS: Existing FRAM visualisations of perioperative anticoagulant management in a Dutch academic hospital were extended to include task delegation in protocols using document analysis and in daily practice using a focus group of eight healthcare professionals, analysed using content analysis. RESULTS: Distinguishing betw

Effect of chronic cocaine use on fine motor coordination tested during ophthalmic vitreoretinal simulated performance.

We conducted a case-control study using the Eyesi simulator to assess the surgical performance of 24 chronic cocaine users (CCUs) and 24 sex-/age-matched controls to numerically quantify ophthalmic microsurgical simulator performance and fine motor deficiencies. The inclusion criteria were no exposure to illicit drugs other than cocaine, marijuana, or alcohol within the previous month and no health conditions that could impact manual task performance. The outcomes included surgical scores (0-100, worst-best) and task completion time (minutes). Fisher's exact test, analysis of variance, Mann-Wh
