Identification and return of a skull from Tasmania in the Berlin anatomical collection.

Following a request by the Australian government, human remains of Australian origin were identified in the anatomical collection of Charité, the medical faculty of Berlin. We initiated an interdisciplinary provenance research on such remains to ensure their identity, elucidate their history, and prepare for a possible return to Australia. Here, we present results regarding a skull in the collection labeled as stemming from Tasmania. The non-invasive anthropological investigation revealed the skull to stem from a girl of about 15 years of age who most likely died of a massive otitis/petrositis

Determinants of dust mite allergen concentrations in infant bedrooms in Tasmania.

BACKGROUND: High exposure to house dust mite allergen during the first year of life has been found to increase the risk of subsequent asthma and mite sensitization. Environmental factors, home construction and cleaning methods used are associated with levels of dust mites in the home. OBJECTIVE: To investigate determinants of levels of Der p 1 and Der f 1 mite allergens in homes of infants in southern Tasmania. METHODS: Dust samples were collected from 72 homes of infants participating in the Tasmanian Infant Health Survey (TIHS). The Der p 1 and Der f 1 allergen concentrations in these samp

Features of infant exposure to tobacco smoke in a cohort study in Tasmania.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To document changes in smoking style around infants over time and to identify factors associated with the smoking hygiene of mothers and others. DESIGN: A population based cohort study. SETTING: Population based, involving 22% of live births in Tasmania, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: From 1 May 1988 to 30 April, 1993, 6109 infants and their mothers (89% of eligible infants) participated in the hospital and home interview of the cohort study. Infants eligible for cohort entry were those assessed at birth to be at a higher risk of SIDS. MAIN RESULTS: The overall proportion of mo

Cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and fetal outcome in Tasmania 1981-82.

Analysis of cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption patterns recorded in pregnancy could not detect a harmful effect of alcohol at levels below 2 glasses a day. Total abstainers fared very slightly worse than those who drank occasionally. Smoking was associated with lower birth-weight and a worse fetal outcome independent of socioeconomic status, parity, maternal age or alcohol consumption. There was evidence of an interaction between smoking and adverse social and parity factors in low birth-weight.

Survey of haemoprotozoa and Toxoplasma gondii in little penguins in Lutruwita/Tasmania, Australia.

Parasitism poses potential health risks to penguin populations, yet the prevalence of protozoan parasites in wild free-living populations remains poorly understood. We conducted a survey of haemoprotozoa and Toxoplasma gondii in little penguins (Eudyptula minor) across 23 colonies in Lutruwita/Tasmania, Australia. Blood samples were screened for haemoprotozoa using light microscopy and nested PCR. Suspect intraerythrocytic inclusions were seen in the blood smears of 25 % of the penguins examined (62/247), but morphological and molecular evidence only confirmed Babesia sp. infection in 2.4 % of

Low birth weight in Tasmania 1975-1983: the effect of socioeconomic status.

An analysis of all births in Tasmania from 1975 to 1983 showed that social class differences in low birth weights were almost entirely restricted to infants between 1500 and 2500 g weight at birth. There was a marginal increase in very low birth weight infants (less than 1500 g) among women whose partners were unemployed or in unskilled work but extremely low birth weight infants (less than 1000 g) were evenly distributed across the whole social spectrum.

Myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative disorders in Tasmania, 1972-80: patterns in space and time.

During the period 1972-80, 866 patients with myeloproliferative (MP) and lymphoproliferative (LP) disorders were diagnosed in Tasmania. The residential histories of these cases were compared with those of population-based controls. No space-time clustering was demonstrated by individuals of any single diagnosis or group of diagnoses, nor were any regional differences in incidence detected. However, urban-rural differences were observed. Rural exposures were important especially in early childhood and at specific intervals before onset for certain diagnoses. Farm residence in early life yielded

Healthism, rural individualism and self-help: youth mental health in Northwest Tasmania.

Rural Australian youth exhibit high rates of mental ill-health, exacerbated by reduced access to mental health services. While the need for innovative solutions is well-established rural youth themselves are frequently excluded from the dialogue, creating a significant gap in evidence and the development of relevant service provision that reflects young people's lived experiences. Drawing on the concepts of individualism and healthism and research highlighting the continuing importance of relationships and trust in the lives of young people in a digital society, we aim to better understand how

Risk of subsequent keratinocyte carcinomas after a first diagnosis in Tasmania, Australia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: A history of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) is a risk factor for further KCs, but population-based studies quantifying the risk are lacking in Australia. We aimed to describe the risk of subsequent KCs after first KCs in the Australian state of Tasmania. METHODS: Tasmanian residents identified in the Tasmanian Cancer Registry with a first histologically confirmed basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) or synchronous BCC and SCC (within 3 months) between January 1985 and December 2013 were followed up for at least 5 years for the development of a subsequen

Prevalence and aetiology of lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment in southern Tasmania.

BACKGROUND: Lymphoedema can be a devastating complication of surgical treatment for breast cancer. There is a lack of research on its prevalence in Australia which has hindered the development of measures to combat the condition. The aims of this study were to establish the prevalence and investigate the aetiology of upper limb lymphoedema in women treated for breast cancer in the years 1994-1996 in southern Tasmania. METHODS: A standard volumetric water displacement technique was used to measure the arms of 201 women. A subjective assessment of swelling was also made by each patient. Factors

Termination of pregnancy in Tasmania: access and service provision from the perspective of GPs.

Termination of pregnancy (TOP) is considered an important component of sexual and reproductive health internationally, but there are known barriers in Australia and countries worldwide. This study investigated the issues for GPs regarding aiding access to TOP and providing early medical abortion (EMA) services for Tasmanian women. Specifically, the aims of the study were to identify the knowledge and attitudes of Tasmanian GPs regarding TOP services and to determine which known barriers to providing EMA are most significant for GPs in Tasmania, Australia. A survey was developed and piloted bas

The problem of overlapping glaucoma families in the Glaucoma Inheritance Study in Tasmania (GIST).

The Glaucoma Inheritance Study in Tasmania (GIST) is a population survey of Australia's island state, Tasmania (population 450,000). Its aim is to find families with autosomal dominant, adult-onset, primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) suitable for genetic linkage analysis. POAG is relatively common, affecting around 3% of the Australian population. By finding the large families with POAG and identifying all the descendants in a captive population, it is possible that there may be overlap of different glaucoma pedigrees. Three of the first thirteen families in the study were composed of overlapp

Young mothers' experiences of regional maternity health care in Tasmania: A qualitative study.

PROBLEM/BACKGROUND: Young women under 24 are still largely missing from research on maternity care, especially those living in regional communities. Building a stronger evidence base about their maternity care experiences will help services better match care to the realities and needs of young mothers. This study will explore how young women aged 15-24 in Tasmania, Australia, access and receive maternity care. METHODS: This descriptive qualitative study drew on 26 one-on-one interviews and two focus groups with 7 women to explore the experiences of 32 young women aged 15-24 years in accessing

The 'GIST' score: ranking glaucoma for genetic studies. Glaucoma Inheritance Study of Tasmania.

The 'GIST' score was developed to facilitate linkage analysis of adult-onset primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) pedigrees in the Glaucoma Inheritance Study of Tasmania (GIST). Previous genetic linkage studies on juvenile open angle glaucoma pedigrees have relied upon an analysis of definitely affected individuals using the 'single best diagnosis' convention. Studies of adult-onset POAG have been complicated by limited numbers of unequivocally affected members identified even in very large pedigrees due to the later onset of the disease. Many members of the pedigree may have equivocal clinical

The epidemiology of acute pancreatitis in Tasmania over a 12-year period: Is this a disease of disadvantage?

BACKGROUND: The global incidence of acute pancreatitis (AP) is increasing, but little information exists about trends in Australia. This study aimed to describe incidence trends, along with clinical and socio-demographic associations, in the state of Tasmania over a recent 12-year period. METHODS: The study cohort was obtained by linking clinical and administrative datasets encompassing the whole Tasmanian population between 2007 and 2018, inclusive. Pancreatitis case definition was based on relevant ICD-10 hospitalization codes, or elevated serum lipase or amylase in pathology data. Age-stan
