An unmet need: Patients with smell and taste disorders.

OBJECTIVES: There are large numbers of patients with olfactory disturbance in the UK and shortfalls in assessment and support amongst mainstream practice in both primary and secondary care leading to significant quality-of-life impairment and potential missed diagnoses. The aim of this study was to determine the key themes which can be identified from the accounts of anosmia sufferers and to identify important areas to target for future research or service development. DESIGN: Qualitative analysis of written patient accounts from patients corresponding with a tertiary smell and taste clinic i

Taste disorders after tonsillectomy: case report and literature review.

The authors describe a case of dysgeusia that occurred during the recovery period after a tonsillectomy. The cause was thought to be a lesion to the lingual branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve because of the location of the symptoms at the posterior region of the buccal cavity and because of the raised electrogustometric thresholds in the posterior region of one half of the tongue. Clarification of this type of case was made by a review of the literature from 1966 to June 2004, carried out with the aid of Medline. From a medicolegal standpoint, it is important to inform the patient of the ris

[Two Cases of Invasive Thymoma with Taste Disorder].

Two 50s female patients with the taste disorder of sweet taste loss and stage IV a type B2 invasive thymoma underwent surgery at our hospital. One patient with myasthenia gravis (MG) developed postoperative myasthenic crisis and recovered by the treatment with plasma apheresis and steroid pulse therapy. Her taste disorder fully recovered together with her MG symptom. The taste disorder of the other patient without MG had persisted for 3 years after the surgery. The taste disorder of sweet taste loss was reported as one of non-motor symptoms caused by MG-related autoimmune mechanisms associated

[Taste disorder caused by carotid artery dissection].

There exist only a few reports on loss of taste sensation caused by dissection of the internal carotid artery. We describe a patient with carotid dissection and ipsilateral ageusia in the anterior two thirds of the tongue, presumably from a lesion of the chorda tympani. Ageusia in carotid dissection is explained by the close anatomic relation of the internal carotid artery and the chorda tympani in the short petrous bone. However, since extension of the space-occupying, dissecting intramural hematoma into the carotid channel as in our patient occurs infrequently--a probable precondition for th

Olfactory and taste disorders in COVID-19: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The SARS-CoV-2 virus causes COVID-19, and it is responsible for the largest pandemic since the 1918 H1N1 influenza outbreak. The classic symptoms of the disease have been well defined by the World Health Organization; however, olfactory/gustatory disorders have been reported in some studies, but there are still several missing points in the understanding and in the consensus about the clinical management of these cases. OBJECTIVE: To identify evidence in the scientific literature about olfactory/gustatory disorders, their clinical presentation, prevalence and possible specific t

Coincidence of COVID-19 Infection and Smell-Taste Perception Disorders.

Many reports by physicians and patients during the 2019 to 2020 pandemic indicate that COVID-19 is associated with elevated levels of odor and taste perception disorders (anosmia, hyposmia, ageusia, and/or dysgeusia). Recent increase in olfactory dysfunction in patients referred to ear nose and throat clinics and COVID-19 infection at the same time encouraged us to examine anosmic/hyposmic patients to establish any association between these signs. It has been shown that the COVID-19 virus exploits the uses angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor to obtain cell entry. This result increases the

Characteristics Associated with Olfactory and Taste Disorders in COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory and taste disorders (OTDs) have been reported in COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the mechanisms of which remain unclear. We conducted a detailed analysis of OTDs as part of 2 seroepidemiological investigations of COVID-19 outbreaks. METHODS: Two retrospective cohort studies were conducted in a high school and primary schools of Northern France following a COVID-19 epidemic in February-March 2020. Students, their relatives, and school staff were included. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were identified using a flow-cytometry-b

Qualitative smell/taste disorders as sequelae of acute COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Qualitative smell/taste disorders (such as phantosmia, parosmia, phantogeusia, and parageusia) have not yet been fully characterized in patients who had COVID-19, whereas quantitative disturbances (i.e., reduction/loss of smell/taste) have been widely investigated. OBJECTIVE: To simultaneously assess the presence of both quantitative and qualitative smell/taste dysfunctions in patients who suffered from COVID-19. METHODS: We enrolled 17 consecutive patients who suffered from COVID-19 over the last 6 months and 21 healthy controls, matched for sex and age. After a negative nasopha

[Special characteristics of expert assessment of olfactory and taste disorders].

BACKGROUND: The number of medical expert opinions dealing with smell and taste disorders has continuously increased in recent years. However, an overview of the specific problems and results of those expert opinions has not been published until now. INDIVIDUALS AND METHODS: Olfaction was assessed by multiple subjective tests in 145 individuals with chemosensory dysfunction caused by trauma or occupational and environmental exposures. Additionally, a gustatory test, nasal endoscopy, anterior rhinomanometry, and radiography of the paranasal sinuses were performed. Malignering was diagnosed on a

The Pathogenesis of COVID-19-Related Taste Disorder and Treatments.

COVID-19, mainly manifested as acute respiratory distress syndrome, has afflicted millions of people worldwide since 2019. Taste dysfunction is a common early-stage symptom of COVID-19 infection that burdens patients for weeks or even permanently in some cases. Owing to its subjectivity and complexity, the mechanism of taste disorder is poorly studied. Previous studies have reported that the COVID-19 entry receptors are highly expressed in taste buds, thereby intensifying the cytocidal effect. Taste receptor cells are vulnerable to inflammation, and the COVID-19-induced cytokine storm causes s

Prognostic factors of recovery with medication in patients with taste disorders.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to elucidate the prognostic factors of the patients with taste disorders who were treated with popular and common medication in Japan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study on the medical charts of a total of 255 patients with taste disorders who were treated primarily with oral medication including a zinc agent. RESULTS: The factors below were significantly linked with poor prognosis: 1) male gender, 2) taste disorders that began 3 months before starting treatment and 3) a severe taste disorder grade at the initial visit. CONCLUSIONS: We have concluded that the

Examination of the taste disorder associated with gynecological cancer chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Taste disturbance is known to occur as one of the adverse events associated with chemotherapy for gynecological cancer, but few studies have attempted to assess it in practical terms. Therefore, a range of taste tests was performed in gynecological cancer patients. METHODS: The patients were 23 women with gynecological cancer being treated with anticancer agents. Subjective symptoms of altered taste were classified, and objective findings were obtained with the following four gustatory tests: serum trace element (zinc, copper, iron) levels, tongue cultures, electrogustometry, and t

Pharmacovigilance imbalance analysis of VEGFR-TKI-related taste and smell disorders.

Taste and smell disorders (TSDs) can induce diminished interest in food, inadequate nutrient intake, and emotional irregularities, particularly among cancer patients. Previous research found that the main culprits of TSD development in cancer patients are cytotoxic drugs such as taxol, fluorouracil, cyclophosphamide, and anthracycline-based drugs. The advent of targeted drugs such as vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (VEGFR-TKIs) has significantly extended the survival time of cancer patients, and thus widely used in clinical practice. However, the associat

Smell, taste and trigeminal disorders in a 65-year-old population.

BACKGROUND: Smell, taste and trigeminal disorders likely have a substantial impact on human daily life. However, data regarding the prevalence of these disorders in Norway are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of smell, taste, trigeminal disorders and associated factors in a 65-year-old population in Oslo, Norway. METHODS: A random sample of 223 individuals (123 men, 100 women) participated in the study. Medical history was obtained, and unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) and stimulated whole saliva (SWS) were collected to determine salivary secretion rates. Sniffin

Olfactory and taste disorders in healthcare workers with COVID-19 infection.

PURPOSE: Severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by COVID-19 has spread globally for the last few months. Healthcare workers (HCW) are overexposed and infection rates are higher than in the rest of the population. Strict clinical assessment is paramount to detect suspicious cases. In this context, olfactory or taste dysfunction (OTD) appears as an early and frequent symptom. Evaluating its presence in early stages plays an important role nowadays. METHODS: We performed a descriptive observational single-center study among 256 HCW at Hospital Universitario de Fuenlabrada affected by COVID-19
