The future management of HS: People with HS as partners.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease with profound impact on quality of life. Increasing recognition of the patient's role as an active partner in their own care has transformed approaches to disease management, yet a conceptual framework for partnerships with people with HS remains lacking. To provide a comprehensive review of meaningful partnerships with people with HS across three levels: the individual, the patient community, and collaborative partnerships. For each level, we review existing evidence, illustrate barriers to meaningful involvement, present e

Getting off the fence: procedures to engage treatment-resistant drinkers.

Historically there have been few options for individuals seeking help for treatment-resistant loved ones with substance abuse problems. This article describes a program with empirical backing called Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT). This cognitive-behavioral treatment teaches the concerned significant other how to use behavioral principles to reduce the loved one's drinking and to encourage the drinker to seek treatment. Additionally it assists the concerned significant other in alleviating other types of stress and in introducing meaningful reinforcers into his or her own l

Consumer Co-Design of an Online Resource to Build Communication Skills of Health Consumers: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Information provided by health professionals can be complex and is often not well understood by health care consumers, leading to adverse outcomes. Clinician-led communication approaches such as "teach-back" can improve consumer understanding, yet are infrequently used by clinicians. A possible solution is to build consumers' skills to proactively check their understanding rather than waiting for the clinician to do so; however, there are few educational resources to support consumers in building these skills. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to co-design a web-based learning resource

Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic: What Can the World Learn and Not Learn from West Africa?

With over 4,500 deaths and counting, and new cases identified in two developed countries that are struggling and faltering in their handling of the epidemic, the 2014 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) epidemic is unlike any of its kind ever encountered. The ability of some poor, resource-limited, developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa to efficiently handle the epidemic within their shores provides some lessons learned for the global health community. Among others, the 2014 EVD epidemic teaches us that it is time to put the "P" back in public and population health around the world. The global healt

Using the teach-back method to increase maternal immunization literacy among low-income pregnant women in Jamaica: a pilot study.

The purpose of this pilot study was to assess maternal health literacy of pregnant women in Jamaica and evaluate their ability to communicate the benefits, risks, and safety of the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) and Hepatitis B (hep B) vaccines after using the teach back method. REALM scores were moderately, positively correlated with identification of the BCG vaccine risks (r = .43, p = .01) and with hep B vaccine benefits (r = .34, p = .05) and risks (r = .42, p = .01). Women who gave incorrect responses about the benefits or risks of the vaccines had lower REALM scores than women who gave c

Improving Medication Reconciliation at Discharge: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Medication discrepancies remain a persistent patient safety concern despite decades of quality improvement efforts. Research indicates that about half of hospitalized adults experience at least one such discrepancy after discharge, often stemming from unclear clinician roles and poor communication among nurses, physicians, and pharmacists. Understanding nurses' perspectives is critical to designing interventions that will improve medication reconciliation and enhance patient safety at discharge. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore RNs' perspectives of medication reconciliation du

Enhancing organizational health literacy through pediatric clinical training: Mini-CEX-based formative assessment in case-based learning for pediatric pneumonia-a perspective.

Organizational health literacy (OHL) remains a critical yet underexplored dimension of health equity, particularly at the interface between clinical training and patient care. This article proposes a conceptual reframing of the Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) as an OHL-oriented formative assessment tool within case-based learning for pediatric pneumonia. The OHL-Mini-CEX model integrates three assessment domains-teach-back evaluation, de-jargonization capacity, and empowering guidance-to systematically evaluate residents' communicative competence in addressing health literacy barr

Redesigning care for back pain in an Australian hospital setting: A service evaluation to identify need for change.

OBJECTIVE: This needs assessment study examined current processes of physiotherapy care for adults with back pain in a large teaching hospital serving a multicultural community in Sydney, Australia. Evaluation of current practices is a necessary first step in the design of a patient-centred, multidisciplinary service that promotes best practice in back pain management. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective service evaluation in the physiotherapy outpatient department by reviewing clinical data on episode of care and processes of care for adults managed for back pain over a 6-month period usin

The potential of digital technologies in problem-based forensic learning activities.

Forensic practice is the concluding practical course of the forensic science bachelor program at the School of Criminal Justice of the University of Lausanne. Learning activities are constructed around five main objectives for the resolution of simulated forensic case problems: 1) select relevant traces and items to be collected at the scene and perceive their potential value in the reconstruction process, 2) apply appropriate detection techniques in sequence to obtain clues of good quality, 3) process traces using Analysis, Comparison, Evaluation and Verification (ACE-V) methodology, 4) produ

The effectiveness of standardized patients as a teaching method for nursing fundamentals.

This study compared two teaching methods and examined their effects on student nurses' clinical competence. A nonequivalent control group was used for this quasi-experimental research, and a posttest design was used to compare the effects on clinical competence. A protocol was developed to include critical behaviors and was used as a checklist for evaluation. The results showed that the standardized patient (SP) method was more effective than the traditional method in helping students: * Identify patient needs. * Perform mouth care, back care, position change, nelaton catheterization, and glyc

Informed Consent in Orthopaedic Surgery: When a Signature Does Not Mean Understanding: A Prospective Study of 750 Patients Comparing Elective and Trauma Settings.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is a cornerstone of modern medicine, yet the extent to which patients truly understand surgical information in the perioperative setting remains uncertain, particularly among older and vulnerable populations. Orthopaedic surgery represents a particularly challenging context, as trauma pathways are often characterized by urgency, pain, and emotional stress, whereas elective procedures allow greater opportunity for structured communication. AIMS: To assess real-time patient comprehension of surgical informed consent immediately before orthopaedic surgery and to comp

Improving Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy in Hospitalized HFrEF Patients: A Multidisciplinary Quality Improvement Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) reduces mortality and rehospitalization in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), yet many hospitalized patients are discharged without optimal therapy. PROJECT RATIONALE: A baseline audit at our community teaching hospital showed fewer than half of eligible patients were discharged on ≥3 GDMT pillars, driven by cost barriers, deferred titration, and inconsistent education. PROJECT SUMMARY: A multidisciplinary Plan-Do-Study-Act intervention standardized GDMT workflows, incorporating pharmacist-led admission review, structur

Dismantling Barriers in the Medical Curriculum for Learners With Hearing Loss: A Case Study.

Despite the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) individuals remain underrepresented in medical education due to the lack of adequate support systems in many institutions. This case study, authored by a DHH student and basic science faculty who worked closely with her, documents the comprehensive support strategies implemented to assist a learner in overcoming challenges related to her hearing loss throughout her undergraduate medical education.
