Gallic (GA) and ellagic (EA) acids are present in foods, medicinal plants, teas, and dietary supplements. An acute toxicological study was conducted by oral administration of both compounds alone (200, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg) and combined (2000 mg/kg) and their effects on the electron transport chain (ETC) and the ROS production in kidney mitochondria further evaluated. All treatments induced a dose-dependent heart, lung, and kidney injury. However, the intensity of these effects varied according to the substance, with greater cardiac and renal toxicity for EA and pulmonary injury for GA, while

A 65-year-old woman with a background of myalgic encephalitis, who was taking alternative medicines and dietary supplements, presented with hypokalaemia and hypertension. After a thorough history it became apparent that this was most likely secondary to regular consumption of liquorice tea. The patient was advised to discontinue drinking this tea and was discharged. Follow-up showed normalising blood pressure and hypokalaemia, with a normal aldosterone:renin ratio.

BACKGROUND: The current lifestyle has made children more susceptible to carious lesions all around the world. One of the major contributing microorganisms is Streptococcus mutans, which causes initiation of enamel caries and is a major etiological pathogen. For the prevention of caries and therapeutic purposes, mouthwashes or mouth rinses are promoted a lot. The first mentioned mouth rinse was seen around 2700 BC in Chinese medicine. Among antimicrobial agents, chlorhexidine is considered gold standard but it has side effects such as extrinsic stain formation and bitter taste. Glycyrrhiza (lic

Oil tea has traditionally been used in minority populations in China for treating various ailments in traditional Chinese medicine. Individually, green tea and ginger, which are the main ingredients of oil tea, have demonstrated antidiabetic effects; however, whether oil tea exerts antidiabetic effects remains unknown. In addition, aberrant gut microbiota structure is associated with diabetic status, and research indicates that there may be beneficial effects of tea on gut microbiota. Therefore, we hypothesized that oil tea exerts antidiabetic effects and induces alteration in gut microbiota.

Herbal teas have been ingrained in traditional practices, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine, for many years. Despite their global popularity and widespread use, there is a notable absence of comprehensive studies elucidating the mechanism of action and potential adverse effects associated with these medicinal herbs. We present the case of a male in his early 50s who consumed an herbal tea called "Tapee tea" which is marketed to alleviate musculoskeletal pain and is available for purchase on various online platforms. He presented to the hospital due to melanotic stools and was subseq

Chamomile (German Chamomile, Matricaria recutita L., Asteraceae) is one of the most popular medicinal plants in use as an herbal tea for food purposes and in folk medicine. Qualitative and semi-quantitative analyses of the volatile fraction of chamomile herbal tea were performed. Volatile constituents of the infusion were isolated by two different methods, namely hydrodistillation and solid phase extraction (SPE), and analysed by GC-MS. The relative proportions of particular chemical classes, present in the essential oil and volatile fractions of the infusion showed remarkable differences. The

Although thread embedding acupuncture (TEA) is widely used for facial nerve palsy (FNP) in Korea, it lacks clinical evidence. Therefore, a large-scale and long-term clinical trial is needed. It is necessary to standardize and optimize TEA treatment for clinical study. Hence, we collected information about how TEA in the facial region is performed in clinical practice using a web-based survey. A questionnaire was developed consisting of 22 essential items and 30 optional items including demographic characteristics, purpose of TEA, adverse events (AE), direct medical cost, required time, and cur

Tea is one of the world's most widely consumed non-alcoholic beverages and is a rich source of bioactive compounds. The synthesis and accumulation of catechins, central flavonols in the secondary metabolism of the tea plant, not only define the bitterness and astringency of the tea infusion but also form the chemical cornerstone of its remarkable antioxidant activity, playing a key physiological role in the plant's abiotic stress tolerance. Catechin biosynthesis involves a complex enzymatic network in tea plants (Camellia sinensis). With the development of molecular biotechnology, the biosynth

Chrysanthemum tea, a typical health tea with the same origin as medicine and food, is famous for its unique health benefits and flavor. The taste and sensory quality of chrysanthemum (Juhua) tea are mainly determined by secondary metabolites. Therefore, the present research adopted untargeted metabolomics combined with an electronic tongue system to analyze the correlation between the metabolite profiles and taste characteristics of different varieties of chrysanthemum tea. The results of sensory evaluation showed that there were significant differences in the sensory qualities of five differe

The indigenous people of the west coast of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula have used a wide variety of forest plants for centuries to make materials and medicines. The late David Forlines shared at least eight generations of the knowledge of uses of these plants for materials and medicines with us in hopes that this information might be used 'to help science catch up with the old people.' Dyes, paints and adhesives were some of the materials made. The medicines were often administered as teas, but in some cases, fresh plant material was required. Some parallels were found to European and

Chrysanthemums are appreciated not only for their ornamental and medicinal attributes but also as edible plants long incorporated into teas, infusions, and culinary traditions. Yet, hybrid cultivars specifically adapted to European growing conditions remain poorly characterized with respect to their medicinal potential. In this study, we investigated the phytochemical composition, antioxidant properties, and enzyme-inhibitory activities of inflorescences of four field-grown Chrysanthemum × morifolium 'Donna' × C. rubellum 'Clara Curtis' hybrids of European origin (CD 7, DC 19, DC 26, CD 46).
