After a brief overview of gambling technologies and deregulation issues, this review examines the impact of technology on gambling by highlighting salient factors in the rise of Internet gambling (i.e., accessibility, affordability, anonymity, convenience, escape immersion/dissociation, disinhibition, event frequency, asociability, interactivity, and simulation). Modification in the proposed diagnostic criteria for Internet addiction.

The Internet is a new technology that has impacted the world and provided many benefits to its users. At the same time the Internet has had negative ramifications. Some people are becoming preoccupied with the Internet, are unable to control their use, and are jeopardizing employment and relationships. The concept of "Internet addiction" has been proposed as an explanation for uncontrollable, damaging use of this technology. Symptoms of excessive Internet use are compared to the criteria used to diagnose other addictions. In particular, pathological gambling is compared to problematic Internet

Transcranial Electrical Neurostimulation as a Potential Addiction Treatment.

Addiction remains difficult to treat, but non-invasive transcranial electrical and magnetic neurostimulation methods may provide promising and cost-effective treatment approaches. We provide a narrative review of recent developments and evidence of effectiveness and consider newer technology that may yield improved treatment approaches. In particular, we review temporal interference electrical neurostimulation, which allows non-invasive and focal stimulation of deep brain regions. This provides a promising new potential approach to treat addiction, because many of the brain regions that seem m

Adverse psycho-emotional effects of excessive consumption of digital content were identified, such as anxiety-depressive states, lack of social skills, dysregulation of circadian rhythms, and the development of addictions. The duality of the effect of digital technologies on the mental state of young people is emphasize

[Big data and new technologies contributions for healthcare: what about prevention and treatment of online gambling disorder].

Information and communication numeric technologies now have a deep influence on the field of healthcare. New medical practices using these technologies attempt to promote greater equality in the access of healthcare services, particularly in the field of mental health and addictions where the use of care remains low. Online gambling addiction, which we will here refer to problem gambling, seems to represent a relevant model of prevention and care measures based on the use of digital data extracted from Big data and the use of new technologies. The data from player accounts offer the possibilit

Positron emission tomography molecular imaging of dopaminergic system in drug addiction.

Dopamine (DA) is involved in drug reinforcement, but its role in drug addiction remains unclear. Positron emission tomography (PET) is the first technology used for the direct measurement of components of the dopaminergic system in the living human brain. In this article, we reviewed the major findings of PET imaging studies on the involvement of DA in drug addiction, especially in heroin addiction. Furthermore, we summarized PET radiotracers that have been used to study the role of DA in drug addiction. To investigate presynaptic function in drug addiction, PET tracers have been developed to

Similarities and Differences in Neuroimaging.

Addiction is a chronically relapsing disease characterized by drug intoxication, craving, bingeing, and withdrawal with loss of control. An expanding body of literature has suggested that non-substance addictions, such as internet addiction and pathological gambling, exhibit shared clinical, phenomenological, and biological features with substance-based addictions. With the development of imaging technology in the past three decades, neuroimaging studies have yielded critical insights into the neurobiological implications of substance and non-substance addictions, revealing neurochemical and f

Machines, medication, modulation: circuits of dependency and self-care in Las Vegas.

The intensive entertainment infrastructure of Las Vegas is overlaid with a robust therapeutic network for those who become addicted to its technologies. Although the objectives of gambling machines and addiction therapeutics are seemingly at odds--the first work to encourage play, the second to stop it--both gear their interventions around a model of the self as a continuum of behavioral potentials that can be externally modulated. For compulsive gamblers implicated in this circuit of modulation, pharmaceutical drugs that have been prescribed to dampen cravings for machine play sometimes funct

Personality traits and psychopathology in adolescents with videogame addiction.

Gaming disorder (GD) was recently included in the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases. A cross-sectional study was conducted in five secondary schools, with a final sample of 119 students. A diagnosis of GD was made in 6.4% (n = 23) of this sample. Compared with healthy subjects, adolescents with GD showed low levels of conscientiousness (F = 7.82; p = .001) and agreeableness (F = 3.31; p = .041) and scored higher in school maladjustment (SMC; F = 9.23; p < .001). Addiction and substance abuse in anesthesiology.

Despite substantial advances in our understanding of addiction and the technology and therapeutic approaches used to fight this disease, addiction still remains a major issue in the anesthesia workplace, and outcomes have not appreciably changed. Although alcoholism and other forms of impairment, such as addiction to other substances and mental illness, impact anesthesiologists at rates similar to those in other professions, as recently as 2005, the drug of choice for anesthesiologists entering treatment was still an opioid. There exists a considerable association between chemical dependence a

"The post-COVID era": challenges in the treatment of substance use disorder (SUD) after the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Citizens affected by substance use disorders are high-risk populations for both SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19-related mortality. Relevant vulnerabilities to COVID-19 in people who suffer substance use disorders are described in previous communications. The COVID-19 pandemic offers a unique opportunity to reshape and update addiction treatment networks. MAIN BODY: Renewed treatment systems should be based on these seven pillars: (1) telemedicine and digital solutions, (2) hospitalization at home, (3) consultation-liaison psychiatric and addiction services, (4) harm-reduction fa
