The development and general morphology of the telencephalon of actinopterygian fishes: synopsis, documentation and commentary.

The Actinopterygii or ray-finned fishes comprise, in addition to the large superorder of teleosts, four other superorders, namely the cladistians, the chondrosteans, the ginglymodes, and the halecomorphs, each with a limited number of species. The telencephalon of actinopterygian fishes differs from that in all other vertebrates in that it consists of a pair of solid lobes. Lateral ventricles surrounded by nervous tissue are entirely lacking. At the end of the nineteenth century, the theory was advanced that the unusual configuration of the forebrain in actinopterygians results from an outward

The telencephalon of the frog Xenopus based on calretinin immunostaining and gene expression patterns.

To further understand the organization and evolution of the telencephalon, we analyzed in the frog Xenopus laevis the expression of the genes Distal-less-4 (Xdll-4, comparable to the mouse gene Dlx2) and GAD-67 (XGAD-67, expressed in GABAergic cells), and compared this with calretinin immunostaining and the cytoarchitecture of the telencephalon. Our results show that like in other vertebrates, the telencephalon of the frog Xenopus is divided into two major territories: a basal, subpallial region showing a high density of cells expressing Xdll-4 and XGAD-67, and a dorsal, pallial region showing

Telencephalon-specific Rb knockouts reveal enhanced neurogenesis, survival and abnormal cortical development.

Correct cell cycle regulation and terminal mitosis are critical for nervous system development. The retinoblastoma (Rb) protein is a key regulator of these processes, as Rb-/- embryos die by E15.5, exhibiting gross hematopoietic and neurological defects. The extensive apoptosis in Rb-/- embryos has been attributed to aberrant S phase entry resulting in conflicting growth control signals in differentiating cells. To assess the role of Rb in cortical development in the absence of other embryonic defects, we examined mice with telencephalon-specific Rb deletions. Animals carrying a floxed Rb alle

Avian telencephalon and cerebellum volumes can be accurately estimated from digital brain endocasts.

For studies of the evolution of vertebrate brain anatomy and potentially associated behaviours, reconstructions of digital brain endocasts from computed tomography scans have revolutionized our capacity to collect neuroanatomical data. However, measurements from digital endocasts must be validated as reflecting actual brain anatomy, which is difficult because the collection of soft tissue information through histology is laborious and time-consuming. In birds, the reliability of digital endocast measurements as volume proxies for the two largest brain regions-the telencephalon and cerebellum-r

Molecular profiling of the developing avian telencephalon: regional timing and brain subdivision continuities.

In our companion study (Jarvis et al. [2013] J Comp Neurol. doi: 10.1002/cne.23404) we used quantitative brain molecular profiling to discover that distinct subdivisions in the avian pallium above and below the ventricle and the associated mesopallium lamina have similar molecular profiles, leading to a hypothesis that they may form as continuous subdivisions around the lateral ventricle. To explore this hypothesis, here we profiled the expression of 16 genes at eight developmental stages. The genes included those that define brain subdivisions in the adult and some that are also involved in b

The telencephalon is a neuronal substrate for systemic inflammatory responses in teleosts via polyamine metabolism.

Systemic inflammation elicits sickness behaviors and fever by engaging a complex neuronal circuitry that begins in the preoptic area of the hypothalamus. Ectotherms such as teleost fish display sickness behaviors in response to infection or inflammation, seeking warmer temperatures to enhance survival via behavioral fever responses. To date, the hypothalamus is the only brain region implicated in sickness behaviors and behavioral fever in teleosts. Yet, the complexity of neurobehavioral manifestations underlying sickness responses in teleosts suggests engagement of higher processing areas of t

Effect of methotrexate exposure at late gestation on development of telencephalon in rat fetal brain.

Pregnant rats were treated with 30 mg/kg of methotrexate (MTX) on gestation day (GD) 16, and fetal brains were examined time-dependently. On GD 20, the appearance of the telencephalon in the MTX group was different from that in the control group, and the major axis of the telencephalon of the MTX group was shortened, compared to that of the control group. In the sagittal section of the telencephalon in the MTX group on GD 20, histopathological findings of deformation and narrowing of the cerebral ventricle, the disturbance of the arrangement of the marginal cell layer of subventricular zone (S

Cytoarchitectonic study of the brain of a dwarf snakehead, Channa gachua (Ham.). I. The telencephalon.

Cytoarchitectonic pattern of the telencephalon of a dwarf snakehead, Channa gachua, is studied by serial transverse sections of the brain (Kluver and Barrera staining). On the anteriormost extremity of the telencephalon, olfactory bulbs terminate that are sessile. The olfactory bulbs comprise four concentric layers, which from outside toward the center are olfactory nerve layer, a glomerular layer, mitral cell layer, and internal cell layer. Large terminal nerve ganglion cells are prominently visible in the dorsomedial position where the bulbs terminate on the telencephalon. In all, 24 nuclei

Cadherin expression by embryonic divisions and derived gray matter structures in the telencephalon of the chicken.

The expression of three cadherins (cadherin-6B, cadherin-7, and R-cadherin) was studied by immunohistochemistry in the telencephalon of chicken embryos at intermediate stages of development (11 and 15 days of incubation). Expression patterns were related to cytoarchitecture and to previously published data on functional connections and on the expression of gene regulatory proteins. Our results indicate that, like in other regions of the embryonic chicken brain, the expression of each cadherin is restricted to parts of embryonic divisions as well as to particular nuclei, areas or their subdivis

Acute response of the fetal telencephalon to short-term maternal exposure to ethanol in the rat.

Pregnant rats were exposed to either ethanol (total dose 18 g/kg) on gestational days 14 and 15 or whole-body ionizing radiation (0.5 Gy) on gestational day 15. On gestational day 16, 24 h following the last dose of ethanol or exposure to ionizing radiation, the developing cerebral cortex of the fetus was examined histologically. Ionizing radiation caused extensive cell death within the fetal cerebral cortex whereas ethanol caused more subtle morphological changes such as cortical thinning and petechial intraventricular hemorrhages. These findings suggest that ethanol, unlike ionizing radiatio

Expression and distribution of neuroglobin and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α in the adult yak telencephalon.

The telencephalon is also known as the cerebrum, and it consists of the largest part of the brain. It makes up about 85% of the total weight of the brain. Neuroglobin (Ngb) is a protein found in neurons of both the peripheral and central nervous system that appears to convey some resilience to hypoxia, while the hypoxia-inducible factor (Hif-1α) is a dimeric protein complex that plays an integral role in the body's response to low oxygen concentrations, or hypoxia. The study examines the expression of Ngb and Hif-1α in the telencephalon of adult yak in the telencephalon. The immunohistochemist

Cerebrovascular pathogenesis in the telencephalon of the loop-tail mouse: a transmission electron-microscopic study.

Cerebral capillaries in the telencephalon of normal (+/+; Lp/+) and abnormal (Lp/Lp) loop-tail mutant mice were studied chronologically by means of electron microscopy at stages ranging from 15 through 18 days of gestation. In the abnormal tissue, neural rosettes were common, and cellular material and red blood cells were often contained within the lumen of the rosettes. The endothelial cells of telencephalic blood vessels in the abnormal brains showed a persistence of cellular projections, subluminal vacuoles, and swollen mitochondria beyond the stage when these features ordinarily disappear

Potential Adult Neurogenesis in the Telencephalon and Cerebellar Cortex of the Nile Crocodile Revealed with Doublecortin Immunohistochemistry.

The brain of the crocodile is known to gain in mass allometrically throughout life, and the addition of neurons (as well as non-neurons) appears to play a significant role in this increasing brain mass. We used immunohistochemistry in the brains of 12 Nile crocodiles ranging between 350 g and 86 kg in body mass and 1.99 g to 7.9 g in brain mass to identify the regions of the brain in which neurons immunopositive for doublecortin (DCX), a marker for potential adult neurogenesis, are found. Similar to other reptiles, potential newly born neurons, those immunopositive for DCX, were found througho

Proliferative defects and formation of a double cortex in mice lacking Mltt4 and Cdh2 in the dorsal telencephalon.

Radial glial cells (RGCs) in the ventricular neuroepithelium of the dorsal telencephalon are the progenitor cells for neocortical projection neurons and astrocytes. Here we show that the adherens junction proteins afadin and CDH2 are critical for the control of cell proliferation in the dorsal telencephalon and for the formation of its normal laminar structure. Inactivation of afadin or CDH2 in the dorsal telencephalon leads to a phenotype resembling subcortical band heterotopia, also known as "double cortex," a brain malformation in which heterotopic gray matter is interposed between zones of

Altered signaling pathway in the dysmorphogenesis of telencephalon in the Gli3 depressed mouse embryo, Pdn/Pdn.

The responsible gene of genetic polydactyly/arhinencephaly mouse (Pdn/Pdn) is Gli3. Pdn/Pdn exhibits absence of the olfactory bulb, suggesting telencephalic dysmorphogenesis. It has been cleared that a transposon was inserted into intron 3 of the Gli3 gene in the Pdn mouse. Adequate PCR primers in the intron 3 and transposon allowed us to discriminate +/+, Pdn/+ and Pdn/Pdn embryos. After genotyping of the Pdn embryos using genomic DNA from the yolk sac membrane, gene expressions in the embryo proper were analyzed by DNA microarray, real-time PCR and whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH) me

Ontogenic origin of salmon GnRH neurons in the ventral telencephalon and the preoptic area in masu salmon.

During the ontogeny of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou, neurons producing the salmon type of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (sGnRH) were first detected in the olfactory epithelium of the eyed egg and, subsequently, in the brain, suggesting a migration of these cells. Among sGnRH neurons distributed from the olfactory nerve (ON) through the preoptic area (POA), those in the ventral telencephalon (VT) and the POA are indicated to regulate gonadotropin secretion. Thus, it is of interest to know whether all the sGnRH neurons originate from the olfactory epithelium. In the present study, we examined
