Superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery bypass.

The superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery bypass is an elegant procedure that was developed and first performed by M. Gazi Yaşargil. It has been used by neurosurgeons for more than 30 years in the management of neurovascular disorders such as cerebrovascular ischemic disease, moyamoya disease, and complex intracranial aneurysms. Mastering the technique requires not only precise and fine skills but also devoted training in the microsurgery laboratory. The technique presented in this article evolved from the long and vast experience of the senior author (DWN) in performing superf

Effect of Adventitial Dissection of Superficial Temporal Artery on the Outcome of Superficial Temporal Artery-Middle Cerebral Artery Bypass in Moyamoya Disease.

Superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) has been used for the treatment of occlusive cerebrovascular disease including moyamoya disease. The effect of STA-MCA bypass depends not only on the patency of anastomosis, but also on integrity and functional capacity of the donor artery. In the present prospective study, we investigated the effect of extensive stripping STA adventitia and fasciae on hemodynamic function in STA-MCA bypass of moyamoya disease patients. Twenty patients (n=8 in control group, n=12 in stripping group) of moyamoya disease were subjected to STA-MCA end-t

Ultrasonography of the superficial temporal and axillary arteries in giant cell arteritis diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the main systemic vasculitis in individuals aged ≥ 50 years. Color Doppler ultrasound (CDS) has an established role in GCA diagnosis and management. This study aims to assess the clinical characteristics associated with a positive CDS evaluation and the impact of additional axillary artery examination on diagnostic sensitivity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing CDS of the superficial temporal arteries, with or without axillary artery assessment, at our hospital, between 2009 and 2023. Patients meeting t

[Superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery anastomosis in a patient of temporal arteritis with internal carotid artery occlusion: a case report].

Temporal arteritis is a rare systemic autoimmune disease and the arteritic process in this case of temporal arteritis involved large and medium-size arteries. Temporal arteritis with internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion is very rare. We report a case of temporal arteritis with ICA occlusion following superficial temporal artery (STA) -middle cerebral artery (MCA) anastomosis, together with steroid therapy. A 73-year-old female presented with a headache, visual disturbance of left side, and suppression of activity. Left STA was inflammatory and overswelling. Magnetic resonance angiography (M

Temporal Artery Calciphylaxis Presenting as Temporal Arteritis in a Case of Rhinoorbitocerebral Mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis is a rare often fatal opportunistic fungal infection. It is typically described in patients with diabetes in ketoacidotic status and is rare in renal transplant recipients. Calciphylaxis is a rare and highly morbid disease of vascular calcification affecting patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The first case of a renal transplant recipient who was inflicted with both rhinoorbitocerebral mucormycosis and calciphylaxis is reported. A 45-year-old man presented with 2-day history of left upper blepharoptosis, periorbital pain, left-sided headache, binocular diplopia, and lef

Anatomic bases of superficial temporal artery and temporal branch of facial nerve.

The superficial temporal artery (STA)-based flaps have been used for different reconstructive purposes. These operations may cause facial nerve injury. The variations of the STA and its relation to temporal branch of the facial nerve (TBFN) were evaluated in this study. Thirteen cadavers with 26 STA and TBFN have been dissected. The bifurcation of STA was found to be 60% above the superior border of the zygomatic arc and 40% below this level. The mean lengths of frontal and temporal branches (FB and TB) of STA were 11.5 and 11.4 cm, respectively. The mean numbers of perforators of FB and TB to

Development of intimal thickening in superficial temporal arteries in patients with moyamoya disease.

To investigate the possible mechanism of neointimal formation in Moyamoya disease, we histologically examined the superficial temporal arteries and also investigated cultured smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from the arteries. Intimal thickening of the scalp arteries developed significantly at an early age in Moyamoya patients compared with control subjects. The histopathological findings of the neointima in scalp arteries were almost similar to those in intracranial arteries in Moyamoya patients. SMCs cultured from Moyamoya arteries responded significantly less to serum mitogens, especially to plat

Incidence of temporal arteritis in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica: a prospective study using colour Doppler ultrasonography of the temporal arteries.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of temporal arteritis (TA) in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) using colour Doppler ultrasonography of the temporal arteries. METHODS: Ultrasonography was performed in all 127 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed, active PMR seen between 1994 and 2000 and in 127 age- and sex-matched controls. RESULTS: Of 102 patients with "pure" PMR, 8% had ultrasonographic findings arousing suspicion of concomitant active TA (specific halo sign and/or positive histology in 7%; histologically proven TA in 4%). Twenty-five patients had clinical signs of bot

Anatomic variations of the superficial temporal artery.

The superficial temporal artery (STA) is a terminal branch of the external carotid artery. It is commonly described as coursing posterior to the mandibular condyle and over the posterior zygomatic root (PZR) and then dividing terminally into parietal and frontal branches. However, possible variations of the main trunk of the STA have seemingly been overlooked. This study retrospectively examined the archived head tomography angiograms of 43 patients to determine the morphology and topography of the STA prior to its terminal bifurcation. In 79% of patients, the STA topography related to the man

Traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery.

A 34-year-old man presented 1 week status post assault with a left orbital floor fracture for which he underwent repair. Approximately 3 weeks following the blunt trauma, he was noted to have a pulsatile mass over the left temple. CT angiography was performed to confirm the diagnosis of a superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm. The patient underwent excision of the involved segment because of concern for possible rupture and pain from the lesion. Although rare, it is important to be aware of superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysms following blunt trauma to the side of the head.

Pseudoaneurysm of the anterior superficial temporal artery.

Pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery must be considered in the differential diagnosis of masses of the lateral forehead and temporal fossa. While the first reported case of a temporal artery aneurysm was reported by Thomas Bartholin in 1740, there is scant mention of this lesion in the plastic and maxillofacial surgical literature. Pseudoaneurysms can arise in the forehead and scalp as a result of blunt traumatic impingement of the superficial temporal artery against the calvarium. The anterior branch of the artery is most vulnerable, because in the lateral forehead it courses ove

Temporal artery inflammation as a complication of anthrax.

A 41-year-old male patient was treated with penicillin for cutaneous anthrax affecting the region of the right eye. He was also given dexamethasone for 3 days to combat extensive oedema which was causing respiratory difficulty because of tracheal compression. After the oedema had resolved and the typical necrotic black eschar of anthrax had evolved, he developed acute inflammation of the right temporal artery. We believe this is the first report of this type of complication of anthrax.
