Injecction of trigger points in the temporal muscles of patients with miofascial syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to examine the effect of blocking trigger points in the temporal muscles of patients with masticatory myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia and headache. METHOD: Seventy patients with one trigger point were randomly divided into 3 groups: injection with saline or anesthetic and non-injected (control). RESULTS: Pain was reduced in 87.71% patients injected with saline and 100% injected with anesthetic. Similar results were obtained for headache frequency. With regard to headache intensity, the injection groups differed from the control group, but not between themselves.

Preoperative Temporal Muscle Volume as an Independent Prognostic Marker in Glioblastoma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Sarcopenia has emerged as a relevant prognostic factor across solid tumors, but its impact in glioblastoma is not fully defined. Temporal muscle measurements on routine cranial imaging offer a pragmatic surrogate of systemic muscle mass in patients who rarely undergo body computed tomography (CT). This study aimed to evaluate whether preoperative bilateral temporal muscle volume is associated with overall survival in adults with glioblastoma, independently of established clinical and molecular prognostic factors. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-center c

Description of the Pedicled Osteo-Muscular Flap of Split Temporal Muscle.

Double or Triple Hit Lymphomas (DHL/THL) represent a subset of aggressive B-cell lymphomas with markedly poorer outcomes and survival rates compared to Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphomas, NOS (DLBCL, NOS). Identifying the Hit status in High-grade large B-cell lymphoma (HGBL)/ Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphomas (used synonymously henceforth) can aid in identifying cases with aggressive clinical course that may benefit from more intensive chemotherapy. Utilizing immunohistochemistry (IHC) to detect Expressor Lymphomas (EL) provides a simpler and cost-effective means to screen DLBCL cases for further mol

Endoscope-Assisted Resection of Intramuscular Cavernous Hemangioma Within the Temporal Muscle.

Hemangiomas are benign vascular soft tissue tumors, which most frequently occur in the skin or subcutaneous tissue. Intramuscular hemangiomas typically occur in the trunk and extremities and less frequently in the head and neck. Among these, those occurring in the temporalis muscle are extremely rare. The authors report the case of a 43-year-old Japanese male with a mass in his left temporal fossa. Computed tomography images showed no erosion of the zygomatic bone, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an ovoid well-marginated mass within the temporal muscle. The lesion was surgically excise

Comparison of temporal muscle fascia and cartilage grafts in pediatric tympanoplasties.

OBJECTIVE: To compare anatomic and functional outcomes of the different graft materials used in pediatric tympanoplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients younger than 18 years of age and who had tympanoplasty between 2010 and 2012 were included in the study. Temporal muscle fascia or cartilage was used as the graft material. The age, gender, the side of the operated ear, the operation technique, pre- and postoperative audiological results, and the status of the graft were noted. An intact graft and an air-bone gap (ABG) ≤ 20 were regarded as surgical success in the postoperative period. Au

Mandibular reconstruction with full thickness calvarial bone and temporal muscle flap.

Eleven patients underwent mandibular reconstruction with pedicled temporal muscle flaps combined with vascularised or free full thickness calvarial bone grafts. Six were primary and five secondary reconstructions. The indications were squamous cell carcinoma (n = 6), radio-osteonecrosis (n = 4), and gunshot wound (n = 1). Five patients also had endosseus implants, either simultaneously or delayed. The only major complications were necrosis of the whole calvarial bone (n = 1) and permanent facial nerve palsy (n = 1). The advantages of using full thickness calvarial bone are that it is thick eno

Treatment of moyamoya disease by temporal muscle graft 'encephalo-myo-synangiosis'.

10 young patients from 7 to 16 years of age with moyamoya disease were treated by temporal muscle graft (encephalo-myo-synangiosis: EMS) for the purpose of increasing extracranial and intracranial collateral circulation. Ischemic cerebrovascular symptoms and signs were encountered in all of them without intracranial hemorrhage. The patients were observed for 6-26 months after the first operation. Transient ischemic attacks disappeared in 4 out of 7 patients, and improved in frequency and duration in the remaining 3. Paresis of the limbs disappeared in 1 patient and improved in 2. In 2 patients

Ultrasonographic assessment of the effects of unilateral mastication on the temporal and masseter muscles.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Unilateral mastication is a complex problem affecting the masticatory muscles. Quantitative evaluation of the contraction efficiency of the muscles to determine what effect unilateral mastication has on them is lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to investigate the differences in masseter and anterior temporal muscle thickness and elastography values between the masticatory and nonmasticatory sides in patients with unilateral mastication habits using ultrasonographic evaluation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five individuals with unilateral masticati

The metabolic and temporal basis of muscle hypertrophy in response to resistance exercise.

Constituting ∼40% of body mass, skeletal muscle has essential locomotory and metabolic functions. As such, an insight into the control of muscle mass is of great importance for maintaining health and quality-of-life into older age, under conditions of cachectic disease and with rehabilitation. In healthy weight-bearing individuals, muscle mass is maintained by the equilibrium between muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and muscle protein breakdown; when this balance tips in favour of MPS hypertrophy occurs. Despite considerable research into pharmacological/nutraceutical interventions, resistance e

Tuberculous pyomyositis of the temporal muscle in a nonimmunocompromised woman: diagnosis by sonography.

Pyomyositis (PM) is an uncommon cause of acute bacterial infection occurring in skeletal muscle. This disease is rare in non-tropical areas, and PM caused by Mycobacterium is very rare in a non-immunocompromised person. The presence of temporal area swelling may lead to a differential diagnosis toward more common pathologies, such as a complication of mastoiditis or a neoplasm of the temporal area. This article describes a case of tuberculous pyomyositis in a non-immunocompromised woman, the diagnosis of which was confirmed by sonographically guided fine-needle aspiration.

[Exteroceptive suppression of activity of the temporal muscle in analysis of pain mechanisms].

Stimulating afferent fibers of the trigeminal nerve usually causes two successive suppressions (ES1 and ES2) of the voluntary muscle activity of chewing muscles. The first phase of decreased voluntary activity is called the early exteroceptive suppression period (ES1); the second phase is called the late exteroceptive suppression period (ES2). Between these two suppression periods is a phase of increased muscle activity, the so-called facilitation period (FP). Usually, in healthy subjects this normal pattern of exteroceptive suppression can be elicited regularly. The reflex answer may occur at

Temporal transposition of the split medial rectus muscle when the medial rectus is the sole functioning rectus muscle.

Multiple cranial nerve palsies often lead to complex clinical presentations. We report 2 cases in which a combination of multiple palsies resulted in paralytic esotropia with the medial rectus being the sole functioning rectus muscle. Both cases were treated with temporal transposition of split medial rectus.

Case series: Noninfectious myositis of temporal muscle: a report of 2 cases.

BACKGROUND: Noninfectious myositis (NIM) of the masticatory muscles is uncommon local myalgia disorder persisted by a centrally-mediated neurogenic mechanism. Due to the rarity of this condition and the lack of appropriate data regarding it, diagnosing this pathology when it affects the temporal muscle (TM) is challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: Clinical signs and symptoms, diagnostic process, and treatment outcome of 2 rare cases of NIM of the TM were presented. The signs and symptoms of the patients were not pathognomonic. There were restrictions on the mouth opening and lateral excursion of th
