This review describes empirical evidence for a bidirectional relationship between tension-type headache (TTH) and sleep. In its most severe form, chronic TTH (CTTH) affects 2-3 % of the population and can be very disabling. Sleep dysregulation triggers episodic TTH, and sleep disorders may complicate and exacerbate headache. The majority of CTTH sufferers also have insomnia, and longitudinal data suggest that insomnia is a risk factor for new-onset TTH. Similarly, observational studies suggest that sleep disturbance is a risk factor for new-onset TTH and for progression from episodic to chroni

The objective of this study was to investigate the importance of genetics in tension-type headache. A MEDLINE search from 1966 to December 2006 was performed for "tension-type headache and prevalence" and "tension-type headache and genetics". The prevalence of tension-type headache varies from 11 to 93%, with a slight female preponderance. Co-occurrence of migraine increases the frequency of tension-type headache. A family study of chronic tension-type headache suggests that genetic factors are important. A twin study analysing tension-type headache in migraineurs found that genetic factors pl

Epidemiology of headache has been the subject of increased attention recently. It appears that the overall human and financial cost of headache is considerable. Moreover, when the comorbidity and indirect implications of headache are taken into account, the result can be staggering. Most of the literature has concentrated on migraine rather than other headache types such as tension-type headache. This article gathers emerging data that give an estimate of some of the aspects of the burden imparted by tension-type headache on society. It also briefly considers some of the factors that could pos

Tension-type headache is one of the most common primary headache disorders. Advances in basic pain and clinical research have improved our understanding of pathophysiologic mechanisms of tension-type headache. Increased excitability of the central nervous system generated by repetitive and sustained pericranial myofascial input may be responsible for the transformation of episodic tension-type headache into the chronic form. Studies of nitric oxide (NO) mechanisms suggest that NO may play a key role in the pathophysiology of tension-type headache and that the antinociceptive effect of nitric o

The vast majority of people experience tension-type headache during their lifetimes. Boys experience tension-type headache slightly more than girls during preadolescent years. During adolescence and adult years, tension-type headache occurs more commonly in females. Tension-type headache changes in women occur in relation to gynecologic changes, including menses, pregnancy, and menopause. These changes are related to estrogen fluctuations. Estrogen fluctuations cause changes in neurochemicals important for pain signal transmission, including serotonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and enkephalins.

Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most prevalent form of headache. Although it is not the most severe form of headache, it has a significant impact on society. In spite of this, little is known about its pathophysiology. Current International Headache Society classification has been called into question, and new classification approaches have been suggested. With reference to chronic TTH, the issue of analgesic rebound may confound the diagnosis. Transformed migraine and new persistent daily headaches are clarified and differentiated from chronic TTHs (CTTHs). The best documented abnormality

CONTEXT: Tension-type headache is a highly prevalent condition. Because few population-based studies have been performed, little is known about its epidemiology.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the 1-year period prevalence of episodic tension-type headache (ETTH) and chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) in a population-based study; to describe differences in 1-year period prevalence by sex, age, education, and race; and to describe attack frequency and headache pain intensity.
DESIGN: Telephone survey conducted 1993 to 1994.
SETTING: Baltimore County, Maryland.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 13 345 subj

Twenty-seven patients with chronic tension-type headache were studied as to end-tidal PCO2, heart rate, mean blood pressure, diameter and blood flow of the common carotid arteries, cranial vascular resistance, and headache intensity at supine rest, after administration of nitroglycerin, and at head down tilt. The results were compared to the results of nitroglycerin and head down tilt provocations in age- and sex-matched controls. During supine rest, no change in chronic tension-type headache occurred. Nitroglycerin and tilting induced significant increase of the headache intensity compared to

New daily-persistent headache (NDPH) and chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) are two forms of primary chronic daily headache of long duration that often are similar in their headache manifestations. NDPH distinguishes itself from CTTH and the other forms of chronic daily headache by its continuous head pain from onset. However, despite formalized criteria that specify NDPH must resemble the acute onset of a headache identical to that of CTTH, NDPH commonly has migraine features. Here, we review the available literature on NDPH and compare its clinical features, epidemiology, prognosis, inciti

Tension-type headache is an entity recognised by the International Headache Society in its International Headache Classification. The limits of this condition, however, are somewhat fuzzy and poorly defined, and its diagnostic criteria are a sort of negation of the symptoms of migraine. In this review we are especially interested in highlighting the diagnostic vagueness in patients with chronic tension-type headache. This refers, above all, to those with a clear history of migraine and who continue to suffer a number of crises with symptoms of migraine, although they have headaches with tensio

Tension-type headache is the most common primary headache disorder seen in adults. Although the prevalence peaks in the fourth and fifth decades of life, significant fractions of the elderly continue to experience either episodic or chronic tension-type headaches. Many secondary headache disorders may present with headaches symptomatically compatible with the diagnosis of tension-type headache. Because numerous secondary headache disorders are more likely to be seen in older adults, the diagnosis of tension-type headache requires vigilance for and exclusion of organic disease. Headache is common in childhood; recurrent headaches include both migraine and tension-type headache (TTH). Although much of the attention recently has been focused on migraine, TTH can also be problematic for children and needs further study. Standardized criteria have been developed and used for epidemiology and treatment studies, but they are yet to be validated for children. The pathophysiology, selective treatment, impact, and outcome of TTH in children need to be studied further.

The first International Headache Society classification defined tension-type headaches by itemizing characteristics of migraines that tension-type headaches did not possess. As a result, tension-type headaches (episodic and chronic) remain the most nonspecific of all the commonly observed primary headaches. Until recently, there has been little impetus on the part of the pharmaceutical industry to investigate tension-type headaches; many of the potentially useful drugs are now generic and unprofitable. In addition, few investigators have pursued the study of tension-type headache because of it

Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most common type of headache in the general population, including individuals over the age of 65 years. Although the prevalence of migraine decreases markedly with age, TTH has a greater tendency to persist later in life. Less commonly, TTH can present for the first time after the age of 50 years. As the elderly population continues to grow, more patients will be presenting to physicians with headache. Special considerations in this population include the higher prevalence of secondary causes and multiple medical comorbidities. This article presents an update

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Tension-type headache is the most prevalent primary headache disorder. While the episodic subtype is more common, chronic tension-type headache significantly impacts health-related quality of life and contribute to increased healthcare utilization and disability. Despite considerable advances in the understanding of tension-type headache, critical gaps persist. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the hallmarks of tension-type headache, from its pathophysiology, comorbidities, treatment options, to psychosocial impact.
MAIN RESULTS: Multiple factors are ass

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Tension-type headache is a very common disease with a high socio-economic impact as its lifetime prevalence is 30-78% in the general population. The incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases is continuously rising. Limited data are accessible on quality of life in patients with surgically treated ulcerative colitis. The aim of our study is to examine quality of life, concerning headache, among patients who had undergone surgery due to ulcerative colitis.
METHODS: Between 1 January 2005 and 1 March 2016, surgery was performed due to ulcerative colitis in 75 patients. Dur
