Effect of ethanol on psychomotor performance and on risk taking behaviour.

Ethanol may increase the willingness to take risks, but this issue remains controversial. We used a risk-taking paradigm in which volunteers answered a series of general knowledge questions with numerical answers and were asked to judge the length of a line that would just fit into a given gap. A maximum score was given for an exactly correct answer. For answers that were less than the correct value, the score was reduced gradually to zero, while answers even slightly over the correct value were penalized considerably. Total points were rewarded by cash payments, so volunteers were taking real

Apraxia.

Humans need to perform skilled movements to successfully interact with their environment as well as take care of themselves and others. These important skilled purposeful actions are primarily performed by the forelimb, and the loss of these skills is called apraxia. This review describes the means of testing, the pathophysiology, and the clinical characteristics that define five different general forms of forelimb apraxia including: (1) ideational apraxia, an inability to correctly sequence a series of acts leading to a goal; (2) conceptual apraxia, a loss of mechanical tool knowledge; (3) id

The effects of orally ingested Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol on drivers' hazard perception and risk-taking behaviours: A within-subjects study of medicinal cannabis users.

Medicinal cannabis use is increasing worldwide, yet its impacts on driving safety in frequent users are not clearly understood. A more comprehensive understanding of the effects of THC on driving behaviour in frequent users is needed to guide drug driving policy and evidence-based advice for medicinal cannabis consumers. This study investigated the acute effects of orally ingested THC oil on medicinal cannabis users': (a) hazard perception skill performance; (b) driving-related risk-taking behaviours (speeding propensity, following distance, gap acceptance); (c) self-perceived hazard perceptio

Evaluation of a digitally enhanced cardiac auscultation learning method: a controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac auscultation remains an efficient and accessible diagnostic tool, especially in resource-limited countries where modern diagnostic devices like cardiac ultrasound are expensive and difficult to access. However, cardiac auscultation skills of medical students and physicians are declining, mainly because of an ineffective teaching method for this technique. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of a digitally enhanced cardiac auscultation learning method on participants' theoretical knowledge and auscultation skills. METHODS: This will be a controlled study w

Nonverbal communication and early language acquisition in children with Down syndrome and in normally developing children.

Many children with Down syndrome display asynchrony in development with the acquisition of language preceding at a slower pace than the acquisition of other cognitive skills. Recent research suggests that the expressive language delays that are displayed by these children may be associated with an earlier disturbance in the development of nonverbal requesting skills (Mundy, Sigman, Kasari, & Yirmiya, 1988; Smith & von Tetzchner, 1986). To test this hypothesis, a longitudinal study of 37 children with Down syndrome and 25 children with normal development was conducted. The results of the study

A survey of Cambodian health-care providers' HIV knowledge, attitudes and intentions to take a sexual history.

Cambodia has one of the highest prevalence rates of HIV in Asia and is scaling up HIV testing. We conducted a cross-sectional survey with 358 health care providers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia to assess readiness for voluntary testing and counselling for HIV. We measured HIV knowledge and attitudes, and predictors of intentions to take a sexual history using the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Over 90% of health care providers correctly answered knowledge questions about HIV transmission, but their attitudes were often not positive towards people living with HIV. The Theory of Planned Behaviour constr

Genetics education for midwives.

Advances in genetic science have increased the number of health interventions undertaken with regard to genetic disorders. Genetics is therefore expanding into the domains of national screening programmes, disease prediction and pharmacogenetics. This expansion means that a growing range of health professionals, including midwives, need skills and knowledge in genetics in order to take on new roles. The government is increasingly recognising the importance of genetic science for health and an expansion of genetic services is now underway. It is acknowledged that education of a wide range of he
