Plants of the genus Teucrium (Lamiaceae or Labiatae family) are known historically for their medicinal value. Here, we identify and characterize the anticancer potential of T. mascatense and its active compound, IM60, in human cancer cells. The anti-proliferative effect of a T. mascatense methanol extract and its various fractions were analyzed in MCF-7 and HeLa cells in a dose- and time dependent manner. The dichloromethane fraction (TMDF) was observed to be the most effective with cytotoxicity against a more expanded series of cell lines, including MDA-MB-231. A time and dose-dependent toxic

Teucrium yemense, a medicinal plant commonly grown in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, is traditionally used to treat infections, kidney diseases, rheumatism, and diabetes. Extraction of the dried aerial parts of the plant with methanol, followed by further extraction with butanol and chromatography, gave twenty novel neoclerodanes. Their structures, relative configurations and some conformations were determined by MS and 1-D and 2-D NMR techniques. Most were fairly conventional but one contained an unusual stable orthoester, one had its (C-16)-(C-13)-(C-14)-(C-15) (tetrahydro)furan unit present as a s

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most common form of the vector borne parasitic disease, causing skin lesion and ulcer. Several studies have reported the resistance of cutaneous leishmaniasis parasite to antimonial drugs. Hence, there is a need to develop cheaper and effective alternative therapies for resistance breakdown. In the current study we report the effectiveness of Teucrium stocksianum extract mediated green synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) against Leishmania tropica (KMU25), a causative species of cutaneous leishmanaisis. ZnONPs was successfully synthesised at 70 °C by co

Ten previously undescribed nor-clerodane diterpenoids, teuvinoids A-J (1-10), were isolated from the whole plants of Teucrium viscidum. Comprehensive structural elucidation, including unambiguous determination of absolute configurations, was accomplished using spectroscopic analysis, electronic circular dichroism, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Teuvinoids A (1) and B (2) are particularly noteworthy for featuring an unusual 2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxylated tetrahydrofuran moiety. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited anti-hepatic fibrosis effects in TGF-β1-induced LX-2 hepatic stellate cells, as demonstr

Teucrium chamaedrys L. is a herbaceous plant common in European woods that has been used for many purposes for centuries. Recently, T. chamaedrys L. has become popular as a slimming decoction without any scientific proof of efficacy notwithstanding its well-known hepatotoxicity. Hydroalcoholic extracts are currently used as flavourings in the preparation of wines, bitters and liqueurs. Teucrin A and teuchamaedryn A are the major toxic components of the diterpenoid fraction of T. chamaedrys L.
