Examining Development Processes for Text Messaging Interventions to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease: Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Interventions delivered by mobile phones have the potential to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD) by supporting behavior change toward healthier lifestyles and treatment adherence. To allow replication and adaptation of these interventions across settings, it is important to fully understand how they have been developed. However, the development processes of these interventions have not previously been systematically examined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically describe and compare the development process of text messaging interventions identified in the Text2PreventC

Text Messaging Versus Email Messaging to Support Patients With Major Depressive Disorder: Protocol for a Randomized Hybrid Type II Effectiveness-Implementation Trial.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) accounts for 40.5% of disability-adjusted life years caused by mental and substance use disorders. Barriers such as stigma and financial and physical access to care have been reported, highlighting the need for innovative, accessible, and cost-effective psychological interventions. The effectiveness of supportive SMS text messaging in alleviating depression symptoms has been proven in clinical trials, but this approach can only help those with mobile phones. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the protocol for a study that will aim to evaluate the feasib

Intraoperative text messaging to reduce parental stress during outpatient pediatric surgery: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: This study examined parental stress indicators during outpatient pediatric surgery and whether intraoperative text messaging could alleviate stress. METHODS: This randomized trial assigned parents of children aged 6 months to 6 years undergoing minor outpatient surgery to an intervention group, receiving standardized intraoperative text messages, or a control group without messages. Both groups received a postoperative phone call. Stress was assessed using salivary cortisol, heart rate, heart rate variability, and subjective ratings at multiple perioperative time points. RESULTS:

The effect of text messaging on latent tuberculosis treatment adherence: a randomised controlled trial.

There is limited high-quality evidence available to inform the use of text messaging to improve latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) treatment adherence. We performed a parallel, randomised controlled trial at two sites to assess the effect of a two-way short message service on LTBI adherence. We enrolled adults initiating LTBI therapy from June 2012 to September 2015 in British Columbia, Canada. Participants were randomised in a 1:1 ratio to standard LTBI treatment (control) or standard LTBI treatment plus two-way weekly text messaging (intervention). The primary outcome was treatment completi

Lessons Learned From iCare: A Postexamination Text-Messaging-Based Program With Sexual Assault Patients.

BACKGROUND: Although beneficial, few sexual assault patients seek follow-up healthcare or counseling after a medical forensic examination. Mobile technology interventions may help patients engage in postcare, but there is a dearth of research on patients' utilization of these interventions. The current study examines patients' engagement with a 4-week postassault text message program (iCare), which assessed patients' safety and well-being, if they needed assistance with accessing nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis, or scheduling appointments for follow-up pregnancy and sexually transmitt

Development of text messages for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in persons with HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Persons with HIV (PWH) have increased risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite this increased risk, perceived cardiovascular risk among PWH is low, and interventions that are known to be beneficial in the general population, such as statins, have low uptake in this population. We sought to develop a bank of text messages about (1) the association between HIV and CVD and (2) advice on reducing cardiovascular risk. METHODS: We developed an initial bank of 162 messages. We solicited feedback from 29 PWH recruited from outpatient clinics providing HIV care at a la

Text4Health: impact of text message reminder-recalls for pediatric and adolescent immunizations.

OBJECTIVES: We conducted 2 studies to determine the impact of text message immunization reminder-recalls in an urban, low-income population. METHODS: In 1 study, text message immunization reminders were sent to a random sample of parents (n = 195) whose children aged 11 to 18 years needed either or both meningococcal (MCV4) and tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (Tdap) immunizations. We compared receipt of MCV4 or Tdap at 4, 12, and 24 weeks with age- and gender-matched controls. In the other study, we compared attendance at a postshortage Haemophilus influenzae B (Hib) immunization recal

The efficacy of SMS text messages to compensate for the effects of cognitive impairments in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Many people with schizophrenia have severe cognitive impairments that hamper their activities. The effect of pharmacological and behavioural interventions on cognitive functioning has been demonstrated, but even after successful intervention considerable impairments can remain. Therefore, we sought for alternative ways to help patients cope with the effects of their cognitive impairments. In the present study, we have evaluated the efficacy of short message service (SMS) text messages to compensate for the effects of cognitive impairments in schizophrenia in daily life. D

IMPORTANCE: Colorectal cancer screening rates in the US remain suboptimal, particularly among low-income and minoritized populations, despite the availability of effective, low-cost options such as the fecal immunochemical test (FIT). Scalable outreach strategies are needed to improve uptake and reduce staff burden in safety-net settings. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a behavioral economics-informed, automated text messaging strategy was associated with increased FIT completion compared with nurse-led telephone call outreach. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This quality improvement rando

The Systematic Development of a Mobile Phone Delivered Text-Messaging Tobacco Cessation Intervention in India.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco consumption is a leading cause of mortality globally. Eighty percent of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Despite this, there is a large treatment gap due to both demand and supply-side barriers. Digital interventions are an innovative solution to bridge this gap. We describe the systematic development of ToQuit, a text-messaging intervention for tobacco cessation in India. AIMS AND METHODS: ToQuit was developed in sequential steps: (1) Identifying Behaviour Change Techniques (BCTs) from evidence-based tobacco cessation interventions; (2) Identifyin

Text Messaging Intervention for Young Smokers Experiencing Homelessness: Lessons Learned From a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Smoking rates are significantly higher among young people experiencing homelessness than in the general population. Despite a willingness to quit, homeless youth have little success in doing so on their own, and existing cessation resources tailored to this population are lacking. Homeless youth generally enjoy the camaraderie and peer support that group-based programs offer, but continuous in-person support during a quit attempt can be prohibitively expensive. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of an automated text messaging intervention (TMI)

Bidirectional Text Messaging to Monitor Endocrine Therapy Adherence and Patient-Reported Outcomes in Breast Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Up to 40% of patients with breast cancer may not adhere to adjuvant endocrine therapy. Therapy-related adverse effects (AEs) are important contributors to nonadherence. We developed a bidirectional text-message application, BETA-Text, that simultaneously tracks adherence, records symptoms, and alerts the clinical team. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We piloted our intervention in 100 patients. The intervention consisted of text messages to which patients responded for 3 months: daily, evaluating adherence; weekly, evaluating medication-related AEs; and monthly, regarding barriers to adhe
