The textile web as a probiotic interface.

Microbiome of the Built Environment research exhibits a marked 'hard-surface bias', overlooking the dynamic soft materials that dominate human-microbial exchange. We propose a theoretical reorientation: the home as a textile web of dynamic, porous microbial reactors. Grounded in immunology's Danger Theory and the principle of 'tissue-based class control', these soft interfaces function as an external tissue analog. By treating textiles as designable interfaces (ranging from airway exchange nodes to laundry bioreactors), architecture becomes a site for proactive probiotic rituals. This framewor

Hearing loss in a textile factory.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence rate of hearing loss at different levels of noise in a textile factory and to find out the levels of hearing loss according to duration (years) of employment in the factory. METHODS: Seventy workers exposed to different levels of noise were matched with 70 persons in the community who were not exposed to occupational noise. Noise levels dB(A) were measured at different locations in the factory. Hearing was assessed in all participants. Few cases were excluded from the study because hearing loss was due to factors other than exposure to noise. RESULTS: The

Byssinosis in a Bombay textile mill.

BACKGROUND: Till a national campaign against dust-related lung diseases was launched by a voluntary agency in Ahmedabad in 1992, government records for the 150-year-old textile industry showed no cases of byssinosis--the disabling occupational disease caused by cotton dust. The worldwide incidence of byssinosis among workers in the dusty sections of textile mills is nearly 40%. We assessed the prevalence of byssinosis in a Bombay mill so that the Employees State Insurance Scheme would start conducting medical checks in all the 55 textile mills in Bombay and officially recognize the disease. [Allergic and irritative textile dermatitis].

Textile dermatitis is only one example of adverse health effects due to clothing. It may present with a wide spectrum of clinical features, but the main mechanisms are irritant dermatitis, often observed in atopics intolerant to wool and synthetic fibers, and allergic contact dermatitis, usually caused by textile finishes and dyes. The newer azo dyes Disperse Blue 106 and 124 in particular are potent sensitizers that have caused significant problems, most recently in the form of "leggins dermatitis". Although severe textile dermatitis appears to be a rare event, more systematic population-base

Pernicious anaemia in the textile industry.

The objective was to examine whether the observed excess mortality from anaemia in textile and clothing workers was associated with any specific anaemia type or occupational activity. The design was a death certificate based case-control study of textile and clothing workers who died in England and Wales in the years surrounding the decennial censuses of 1961, 1971, and 1981. The main outcome measures were type of anaemia, place of residence, place of birth, and occupation. The frequency of the different types of anaemia in textile and clothing workers differed from that of England and Wales w

Chronic bronchitis in textile workers.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to cotton is known to produce a specific occupational disease known as byssinosis. A large population of textile workers was investigated to determine whether such exposure was also associated with chronic bronchitis once other possible aetiological factors had been accounted for. METHODS: A total of 2991 workers were investigated for the presence of symptoms compatible with chronic bronchitis. An MRC adapted respiratory questionnaire and MRC definition of chronic bronchitis were used for diagnostic labelling. Current and lifetime exposure to dust was estimated by persona

Droplet impact onto textiles: Wetting, spreading, and lamella-controlled splashing.

HYPOTHESIS: Textile weave structure, surface roughness, wettability, and liquid viscosity play a role in droplet spreading and the splashing behavior on commercial textiles following impact. We hypothesize that, collectively, these parameters define whether the droplet undergoes smooth spreading or splashing. EXPERIMENTS: In our experiments, we visualize the impact dynamics of droplets on textile samples. Experiments were conducted on eight commercial textiles featuring satin and plain weaves. Here, we used three Newtonian fluids (water, silicone oil, and a 45 wt.% aqueous glycerol solution)

Clothing Textiles as Carriers of Biological Ice Nucleation Active Particles.

Microplastics have littered the globe, with synthetic fibers being the largest source of atmospheric microplastics. Many atmospheric particles can act as ice nucleators, thereby affecting the microphysical and radiative properties of clouds and, hence, the radiative balance of the Earth. The present study focused on the ice-nucleating ability of fibers from clothing textiles (CTs), which are commonly shed from the normal wear of apparel items. Results from immersion ice nucleation experiments showed that CTs were effective ice nucleators active from -6 to -12 °C, similar to common biological i

Effects of Technical Textiles and Synthetic Nanofibers on Environmental Pollution.

Textile manufacturing has been one of the highest polluting industrial sectors. It represents about one-fifth of worldwide industrial water pollution. It uses a huge number of chemicals, numerous of which are carcinogenic. The textile industry releases many harmful chemicals, such as heavy metals and formaldehyde, into water streams and soil, as well as toxic gases such as suspended particulate matter and sulphur dioxide to air. These hazardous wastes, may cause diseases and severe problems to human health such as respiratory and heart diseases. Pollution caused by the worldwide textile manufa

Body louse remains found in textiles excavated at Masada, Israel.

A leg of the body louse, Pediculus humanus humanus L. (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae), was found in a storeroom at Masada build during the reign of King Herod the Great. The unearthed culture material clearly indicates that the room was occupied by the rebels during the first Jewish revolt against the Romans (AD 66-73/4). The context of the textiles associated with the louse and their nature suggest a rebel origin. An exuvium of a leg of the third nymphal stage of body louse was found. The first three parts of the leg (tarsus, including the tarsal claw, tibia and femur) were preserved entirely, wh

UiO-66 Inspired Superhydrophobic Coatings Fabricated from Discarded Polyester/Spandex Textiles.

We report on a method for synthesizing superhydrophobic coatings using a UiO-66 metal-organic framework (MOF) with discarded polyester/Spandex fabrics as raw materials. Unlike traditional recycling techniques that involve separating non-poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) components, our approach directly uses blended polyester/Spandex fibers. Discarded polyester/Spandex fabrics were exposed to an alkaline depolymerization process to produce disodium terephthalate (Na2BDC), which is a known linker for UiO-66 synthesis. We conducted experiments under two different conditions involving different

3D Printing onto Textiles: A Systematic Analysis of the Adhesion Studies.

The article reviews the literature focused on investigating the adhesion strength between the 3D-printed polymers and the textile substrates, and its dependence on different factors related to materials, printing parameters, and fabrics type and structure. 3D printing (3DP) onto textiles is a domain in expansion as it allows developing products with new functionalities by gathering the advantages of design freedom, tailor-fit, comfort, variety, and mass customization provided by both the textiles and the additive manufacturing technology. In this context, it becomes important to document and u

Development of copper impregnated bio-inspired hydrophobic antibacterial nanocoatings for textiles.

Due to their bactericidal and fluid repellent capabilities, antimicrobial textiles with hydrophobic properties have aroused a lot of interest in healthcare, hygiene, air purifiers, water purification systems, food packaging, and other domains. Silver and silver-derived compounds have long been employed in antimicrobial coatings; nevertheless, they are costly, limiting their widespread use. In this work, we combined mussel-inspired polydopamine (pDA) coating chemistry with graphene oxide (GO) and antimicrobial copper compounds (Cu(NO3)2, CuCl2, Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs), and Cu-Carbon nanofibers
