Human thelaziasis is a zoonotic eye disease caused by a nematode parasite called Thelazia. In India, seven human cases of Thelazia have been reported earlier. This is the first case report of an infant infected with Thelazia. During the month of July, 2012, the infant was presented with an eye problem to the eye clinic from a village of Dibrugarh. Five worms (three female and two male) were recovered from the left eye of the infant. Thelazia infection is rare in infant, and report of this case is suggestive of prevalence of infection in the area and warrants further investigation.

Spirocerca lupi is a parasitic nematode responsible for spirocercosis, a potentially severe disease in domestic dogs. Clinical manifestations are variable and nonspecific, often leading to confusion with other gastrointestinal, respiratory, or neoplastic disorders and making diagnosis challenging. Although canine spirocercosis has previously been reported on Reunion Island, the molecular epidemiology and data on its occurrence remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the circulation of S. lupi on Reunion Island, using endoscopy, coproscopy, and molecular assays. Over a 75-day period, 88

Thelaziasis, also known as thelaziosis, is a neglected vector-borne disease caused by parasitic nematodes from the genus Thelazia, belonging to the family Thelaziidae. The disease is transmitted biologically by various fly species, including the genus Musca (family Muscidae), Phortica (family Drosophilidae), and Fannia (family Fanniidae). These flies act as intermediate hosts (IHs) by depositing infective third-stage larvae (L3) during their tear feeding. Thelazia spp., such as T. gulosa, T. skrjabini, and T. rhodesi, inhabit the ocular regions of various animals, including humans and birds. A

This report describes Schizangiella infections in colubrid and viperid snakes. A captive eastern ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis) was presented for a large intraoral mass associated with the mandible. The mass was debulked and histologic examination revealed severe, granulomatous stomatitis with intralesional fungi exhibiting morphologic features consistent with Schizangiella serpentis. PCR and sequencing of affected tissues confirmed S. serpentis. Because of declining health, the ratsnake was euthanized and postmortem examination identified a disseminated S. serpentis infection involvin

BACKGROUND: Thelaziasis is a zoonotic disease mainly caused by Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida, Thelaziidae, Thelazia), which can cause mild to severe signs and lesions, such as foreign body sensation, itching, tearing, eye pain, conjunctival bleeding, conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, and even blindness. Thelaziasis cases have been reported mainly in agricultural areas and areas with high potential for contact with domestic animals [1].
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of Thelazia callipaeda infection in the right eye of a 41-year-old woman working in an office. The patient presented with pe

Infection with Thelazia nematodes results in eye disease in wild and domestic animals. The aim of the present study was to describe the occurrence of Thelazia nematodes in European bison, and to subject the isolated parasites to molecular identification and phylogenetical analysis. The eyeballs of 18 European bison from the Bieszczady Mountains, culled due to dysfunctional vision, were collected for study. The conjunctival sacs, tear ducts, corneal surface and nictitating membrane were rinsed with a saline solution. Any obtained nematodes were isolated under a stereoscopic microscope, and then

Thelaziasis is a zoonotic disease which affects the eye of domestic and wild carnivores caused by the nematode Thelazia. It is transmitted to humans by secretophagous arthropod-borne zoophilic nonbiting flies of the family Drosophilidae. Human thelaziasis is rare and occurs in poor socio-economic families of the rural locations where people live in close proximity with animals. A one and halfyear-old was presented to the outpatient ophthalmology clinic after her mother noticed a whitish, thread-like worm in her right eye. A total of four worms were mechanically removed from her right eye. All

Cases of gnathostomiasis, an infection caused by consuming infected seafood, have been reported in Australia. However, doubt exists over the validity of these diagnoses as there are no reports of Gnathostoma spp. in Australian teleost fish. Also, the diagnoses in human cases were based on a serological test developed in Thailand. The specificity and sensitivity of this test in non-endemic areas are uncertain. Interestingly, parasites belonging to the genus Echinocephalus, which morphologically are very similar to Gnathostomum, are commonly found in Australian fish and shellfish and can potenti

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing number of reports of autochthonous cases of ocular thelaziosis in dogs in several European countries, and the evident emergence of human cases, the distribution and spreading potential of this parasite is far for being fully known. In Romania, despite intensive surveillance performed over recent years on the typical hosts of T. callipaeda, the parasite has not been found until now.
METHODS: In October 2014 a German Shepherd was presented for consultation to a private veterinary practice from western Romania with a history of unilateral chronic conjunctivitis

Gnathostomiasis by Gnathostoma hispidum has occurred mainly in southern and western areas of Japan since 1980. In all cases, patients had eaten live loaches, freshwater fish imported from southeast Asia. Chief symptoms were creeping linear skin eruptions and eosinophilia, both of which disappeared in most patients within three months after the onset, and never recurred thereafter. In order to study how gnathostome larvae may survive and behave in humans, rats were infected with gnathostome larvae. Loaches were purchased in city markets in Fukuoka. Gnathostome larvae (G. hispidum) were recovere

Indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) was performed on sections of Gnathostoma spinigerum advanced third-stage larva with gnathostomiasis, angiostrongyliasis, trichinosis, strongyloidiasis and cysticercosis sera. Positive fluorescence was observed with the first three sera. Fluorescence was associated with the anterior part of the esophagus, surface of the cuticle and cytoplasmic granules of the intestine. Absorption of sera with gnathostome antigen did not elicit fluorescence. The results suggest that substances secreted from the esophagus and intestine constitute antigens in excretory-se

We report a case of thelaziasis in a 26-year-old female, acquired in Oregon. A total of 14 worms were removed from the patient's left eye and were morphologically identified as being Thelazia gulosa. Until now, only two species of Thelazia have been implicated in causing human disease, Thelazia callipaeda in Asia and Europe and occasional reports of Thelazia californiensis from the United States of America. Here, we describe a third, previously unreported parasite of humans, T. gulosa (the cattle eyeworm) as an agent of human thelaziasis and the first reported case of human thelaziasis in Nort

The current report describes granulomatous pneumonia due to Spirocerca lupi in 2 free-ranging maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus). Both wolves had multiple, white, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, soft, encapsulated granulomas in the caudal lung lobes, which contained centrally placed parasites on cut sections. Microscopically, there was granulomatous inflammation with numerous intralesional sections of spirurid nematodes. Representative complete adult specimens of nematodes derived from these lesions were submitted for parasitological exam and identified as the spirurid S. lupi. To the authors' knowled

A 5 years old girl was admitted to Ophthalmology department of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh with excessive watering, redness and movement of something in her right eye for last 2 months. She had unaided visual acuity- 6/6, matted eye lashes and mucoid discharge in right eye. Follicles were present on the fornices and lower palpebral conjunctiva of the same eye. On eversion of the right upper lid there were silicon tube like coiled moving structures seen at the lateral part of the upper fornics. Six nematodes were seen in the upper fornics around the duct of lacrimal glands.

We report a rare case of human thelaziasis. A 31-year-old man from Nakhon Pathom, Thailand presented to the hospital with a foreign body sensation in and excessive lacrimation from the right eye for one week. His visual acuity was normal. He gave a history of a fly flying around his face; he then rubbed it against his right eye. Five adult worms were collected from the right eye. Two were removed by the patients and three were removed on the ward, using a small cotton swab, from the conjunctival sac. All five worms were identified morphologically as Thelazia callipaeda. The patient became free

Between November 2021 and January 2023, the eyes of either slaughtered or deceased male American bison (Bison bison) and European bison (Bison bonasus) from Romania were investigated for the presence of Thelazia spp. nematodes (eye worms). These included seven farmed American bison from two locations and two wild European bison from reintroduction sites. Thelazia rhodesi and Thelazia skrjabini were present in three American bison and both European bison. A total of 38 nematodes were recovered, with T. rhodesi being the predominant species. Molecular analysis confirmed these findings and identi

This study was conducted to determine how reducing the parasite burden in a definitive host may affect the prevalence in intermediate hosts. Here we used the eyeworm Oxyspirura petrowi and cecal worm Aulonocephalus pennula as model species. Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) were provided an anthelmintic medicated feed in wild systems because of convincing evidence that these parasites were suppressing their populations. Eyeworm and cecal worm prevalence were measured in Orthopterans, which act as intermediate hosts, using polymerase chain reaction. Individuals were collected from a

Thelazia callipaeda, a parasitic nematode that causes thelaziosis in various mammals, including humans, is known to be endemic in Korea. However, life cycle-related information on the parasite, primarily from human infection and a few dog cases, is limited. This study reports additional cases of T. callipaeda infections in dogs from both rural and urban areas in Korea, indicating the potential for transmission to humans and other animals. We collected 61 worms from 8 infected dogs from Paju and Cheongju Cities and observed their morphological characteristics under a light microscope. The findi
