Across social species, social touch enhances well-being and reduces pain - two seemingly distinct benefits that enhance survival. Yet where and how the nervous system integrates these functions, and whether a single mechanism could serve both, remains unknown. Here we show that massage triggers oxytocin release, which shapes both pain and touch reward at the earliest stage of central processing - the spinal cord - through a single, state-dependent circuit mechanism. We report that in humans, massage enhances well-being, effects that correlate with endogenous oxytocin release. In mice, gentle t

OBJECTIVE: Psychedelic therapies are promising new treatment options in psychiatry. Including the use of physical touch as part of treatment is an area of debate. This study aimed to characterize the viewpoints of practitioners on the use of touch in psychedelic therapy.
METHODS: An anonymous survey was distributed via e-mail to the contacts listed on ClinicalTrials.gov for trials of psilocybin and lysergic acid diethylamide, via e-mail to personal contacts of the current authors, and through snowball sampling. Survey items focused on topics related to the facilitation of psychedelic treatmen

Interoception, or the sensing and integration of bodily state signals, has been implicated in anorexia nervosa (AN), given that the hallmark symptoms involve food restriction and body image disturbance. Here we focus on brain response to the anticipation and experience of affective interoceptive stimuli. Women remitted from AN (RAN; N = 18) and healthy comparison women (CW; N = 26) underwent a pleasant affective touch paradigm consisting of gentle strokes with a soft brush administered to the forearm or palm during functional neuroimaging. RAN had a lower brain response relative to CW during a

BACKGROUND: Pain felt in an amputated limb is quite common. Phantom pain affects the lives of individuals in many ways and can negatively affect the holistic well-being of individuals. Distant Reiki can be used in the management of these problems.
AIM: This study was conducted to examine the effect of distant Reiki applied to individuals with extremity amputation on pain level and holistic well-being.
METHOD: This a quasi-experimental single group pre-test. Post-test design research was conducted between September 2022 and April 2023 and included 25 individuals with extremity amputation. The

PURPOSE: Breast cancer and its treatments cause multifaceted symptoms in women, affecting their physical, psychological, and emotional well-being. Complementary practices such as Reiki are increasingly used to support symptom management, particularly during chemotherapy. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of Reiki practice on improving symptoms in breast cancer patients within the framework of Martha E. Rogers' "Science of Unitary Human Beings."
METHOD: This study was conducted as a systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive literature se

While tactile perception has long been studied through the lens of discriminative touch, recent research has highlighted the existence of a distinct affective touch system. Pleasant touch refers to specific forms of light tactile stimulation, such as gentle stroking or caressing applied to hairy skin. This type of sensation is primarily conveyed by unmyelinated C-tactile (CT) afferents expressing a subclass of mechanoreceptors with low-threshold activation and slow-to-intermediate adaptation. Importantly, CT firing correlates strongly with subjective pleasantness ratings but not with intensity

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a chronic brain disorder associated with a high risk of relapse and a limited treatment efficacy. Relapses may occur even after long periods of abstinence and are often triggered by stress or cue induced alcohol craving. C-tactile afferents (CT) are cutaneous nerve fibers postulated to encode pleasant affective touch and known to modulate physiological stress responses. However, their translational potential has not yet been explored extensively in controlled clinical trials. This randomized controlled study aimed to investigate the potential of CT stimulation in

Social touch interventions have the potential to modulate psychological and physiological stress in intensive care settings. In individuals with disorders of consciousness (DOC), tactile stimulation combined with other sensory modalities, (e.g., visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and proprioceptive), has been proposed to enhance arousal, behavioural responsiveness, and recovery, while mitigating sensory deprivation. However, tactile stimulation encompasses heterogeneous forms of touch and the extent to which clinical benefits can be attributed to specific tactile qualities remains unclear

BACKGROUND: Infants with complex congenital heart disease (CCHD) demonstrate impaired autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation, which may contribute to commonly observed impairments in feeding, growth, and development. Close mother-infant physical contact improves ANS function in other high-risk infant populations.
OBJECTIVE: Our purposes were to examine feasibility of a 2-week daily skin-to-skin contact (SSC) intervention and to describe change in ANS function in response to the intervention.
METHODS: Feasibility was assessed by recruitment and retention rates, safety, and acceptability. A

Therapeutic touch applied to primary tumors can increase metastasis. The goal of this project was to determine whether touch applied to metastatic tumors also increases metastasis. We evaluated touch on a mouse model of experimental metastasis using a manual treatment called Lymphatic Pumping Technique (LPT), which increases lymphatic fluid flow and is contraindicated in patients with cancer. The LPT, or a sham treatment, was administered for 5 minutes while the mice were anesthetized with vaporized isoflurane. Young adult (3 months old) and aged (20-24 months old) mice received daily sham or

ABSTRACT Many people with autistic disorder have problems with oversensitivity to both touch and sound. The author (an autistic person) developed a device that delivers deep touch pressure to help her learn to tolerate touching and to reduce anxiety and nervousness. The "squeeze machine" applies lateral, inwardly directed pressure to both lateral aspects of a person's entire body, by compressing the user between two foam-padded panels. Clinical observations and several studies suggest that deep touch pressure is therapeutically beneficial for both children with autistic disorder and probably c

INTRODUCTION: Cancer treatment with chemotherapy frequently leads to side effects such as fatigue, pain, nausea, and anxiety. Healing Touch is a non-invasive complementary therapy often used by cancer patients to address side effects of treatment. To better inform the use of complementary therapies, there is a need to understand the biological mechanisms underlying the effects of such treatments.
METHODS: This study included 44 patients with cervical cancer undergoing chemoradiation randomized into a Healing Touch (HT), a relaxation training (RT) and a usual care (UC) group. An exploratory me

BACKGROUND: Infants with complex congenital heart disease requiring surgical intervention within the first days or weeks of life may be the most seriously ill infants needing intensive nursing and medical care. Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is well accepted and practiced as a positive therapeutic intervention in premature infants but is not routinely offered to infants in cardiac intensive care units. The physiologic effects of SSC in the congenital heart disease population must be examined before recommending incorporation of SSC into standard care routines.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this case

A scoping review investigated the effectiveness of different communicative interventions for patients with dementia. It demonstrated that communication between caregivers and dementia patients is improved by music, multisensory stimulation, and communication training. As a result agitation, mania, fear, anger and corrective touching are reduced, and fluency, spontaneous speech, eye contact, smiling and affective touching are enhanced. The recommendations, summarized in a fact sheet, also contribute to improved therapeutic decision making with bystanders and oral health of people with dementia.

Touch-based therapies (massage, acupressure, reflexology/shiatsu, and therapeutic/healing touch) are used in dementia care, but effectiveness remains uncertain. The authors evaluated their impact on behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and pain, and extracted pragmatic "dose" and delivery parameters to inform a research blueprint. The authors searched major databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, CENTRAL) for studies from January 2005 to February 2023 involving people with any dementia aetiology/severity in community, residential, or inpatient settings. Eligible desi

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression affect many people. Treatments do not have complete success and often require people to take drugs for long periods of time. Many people look for other treatments that may help. One of those is Reiki, a 2500 year old treatment described as a vibrational or subtle energy therapy, and is most commonly facilitated by light touch on or above the body. There have been reports of Reiki alleviating anxiety and depression, but no specific systematic review.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of Reiki for treating anxiety and depression in people aged 16 and ove

Hamstring muscle length may be associated with specific pelvic and trunk postures, but the influence of hamstring length on trunk postures is not well documented. The purposes of this study were to examine the influence of hamstring length on 1) the pelvic angle, lumbar angle, and thoracic angle in standing; and 2) the flexion ranges of motion of the pelvic angle, lumbar angle, and thoracic angle during the toe-touch test. Surface platform pointers over bony landmarks and photography were used to examine the pelvic and trunk angles and ranges of motion of 10 men with short hamstrings, 10 men w
