Use of a thermal comfort wearable improves temperature intolerance in patients with postural tachycardia syndrome.

PURPOSE: Temperature intolerance is a common and often debilitating symptom of postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), however treatment options are limited. In this open-label pilot study, we examined the use of a novel wearable thermal watch (Embr Wave2™) on thermoregulatory and other autonomic symptoms in POTS. METHODS: Participants with POTS and temperature intolerance were recruited from the Stanford autonomic disorders clinic. All patients completed an online battery of autonomic and sleep questionnaires including the composite autonomic symptom score-31 (COMPASS-31), the Delphi interocep

The influence of shading facilities on outdoor thermal comfort, pedestrian walking speed, and indoor satisfaction.

As urban development increases, the use of air conditioning, industrial activities, and transportation makes human heat a major contributor to the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI). Common strategies to mitigate UHI include expanding water areas and green spaces, designing effective ventilation systems, and promoting energy-efficient buildings. In addition, shade structures have become a widely used thermal adaptation measure in outdoor environments. In this study, we investigated the walking speed and thermal comfort of pedestrians during the transition from outdoor to air-conditioned indoor spa

Strategies for thermal comfort in university buildings - The case of the faculty of architecture at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil.

Buildings constructed according to bioclimatic architectural principles in amenable climates have often experienced posterior interventions that have closed ventilation openings for the installation of air conditioning units. The present work sought to investigate the reasons for installing air conditioning equipment in buildings even under adverse economic conditions and with the awareness of their negative environmental implications. The Faculty of Architecture building at the Federal University of Bahia, located in the city of Salvador, Bahia State, Brazil, was the focus of the present inve

Predictive value of three thermal comfort indices in low temperatures on cardiovascular morbidity in the Iberian peninsula.

The natural environment has been considered an important determinant of cardiovascular morbidity. This work seeks to assess the impact of the winter thermal environment on hospital admissions from diseases of the circulatory system by using three biometeorological indices in five regions of the Iberian Peninsula. A theoretical index based on a thermophysiological model (Universal Thermal Climate Index [UTCI]) and two experimental biometeorological ones (Net Effective Temperature [NET] and Apparent Temperature [AT]) were estimated in two metropolitan areas of Portugal (Porto and Lisbon) and in

Residual limb skin temperature and thermal comfort in people with amputation during activity in a cold environment.

Thermal comfort remains a common problem for people with lower-limb amputation. Both donning a prosthesis and engaging in activity at room temperature can increase residual limb skin temperature; however, the effects of activity on skin temperature and comfort in more extreme environments remain unknown. We examined residual limb skin temperatures and perceived thermal comfort (PTC; 11-point Likert scale) of participants with unilateral transtibial amputation (n = 8) who were snowshoeing in a cold environment. Residual limb skin temperature increased by 3.9°C [3.0°C to 4.7°C] (mean difference

Air temperature versus thermal indices (UTCI and PET) across Türkiye: reanalysis evidence that thermal comfort and heat stress cannot be inferred from air temperature alone.

Air temperature (Ta) remains the most widely communicated measure of heat, yet human heat stress also depends on air humidity, wind conditions and radiation fluxes. We quantified the difference between Ta and two human-biometeorological indices, the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) and the Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET), across Türkiye using hourly May-September reanalysis data for 1950-2024. ERA5-Land supplied Ta, humidity, wind and pressure at ~ 0.1° resolution, while mean radiant temperature (MRT) was taken from the Copernicus thermal-comfort dataset derived from ERA5 (E

Designing for mild winters: evidence-based thermal comfort benchmarks from urban parks in a sub-tropical city.

Outdoor thermal comfort in the cool season remains under-specified for humid subtropical cities. We conducted a winter field study across four urban parks in Hong Kong, collecting 611 paired questionnaire-microclimate records (December-March). On-site measurements (air temperature, globe temperature, humidity, wind) were linked at 60-s resolution to Cantonese surveys of thermal sensation. Neutral temperature was estimated with ordinary least squares and confirmed with proportional-odds models; 2,000-fold bootstrap confidence intervals and 0.5 °C binned regressions quantified uncertainty and se

Effectiveness of a new thermal insulation blanket in the control of inadvertent perioperative hypothermia and comfort: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in the thermoregulatory system can precipitate inadvertent hypothermia in patients undergoing surgeries lasting over 60 min, causing serious complications in the recovery process. Cutaneous thermal protection is relevant for the control of temperature of patients in the perioperative setting. The standard thermal protection widely utilized is an electric forced warm air blanket. This study compared a new layered textile blanket with the standard protection. The hypothesis posited that the textile blanket could provide cutaneous thermal protection comparable to that of

Dynamic impacts of face masks and walking duration on pedestrian thermal comfort in shaded outdoor environments during summer.

The normalization of mask-wearing in the post-pandemic era has raised concerns regarding its potential thermal burden during outdoor physical activities, especially in hot and humid climates. This study examines the combined effects of face mask type (no mask, surgical mask, and KN95 mask) and walking duration on physiological responses and thermal comfort in shaded outdoor environments during summer. Field experiments were conducted in Guangzhou with 28 participants walking at three speeds (1.2, 1.4, and 1.6 m/s). Key physiological parameters (mean skin temperature, heart rate, tympanic tempe

A comprehensive assessment of indoor air quality and thermal comfort in chain stores: a case study from Iran.

This study thoroughly examined indoor air quality in six chain stores in Isfahan, Iran and involved the measurement of air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO2, bacteria and fungi), alongside noise levels and thermal comfort over four seasons (2023-2024). To address the diversity of pollutants and enhance decision-making, an indoor air quality index (IAQI) was proposed, based on the importance coefficient and pollutant duration of presence. The results revealed that concentration of PMs in the autumn was relatively higher than in other seasons, with a strong correlation (R2 = 0.926) observed

Wearable Sensing for Personal Thermal Comfort in the Built Environment: A Systematic Review of the Gap from Sensing to Actuation.

Wearable sensors enable continuous, non-invasive monitoring of physiological and near-body environmental parameters, offering an occupant-centric alternative for thermal comfort assessment and building control. This systematic review analyses 117 studies (2008-2026) using body-worn sensors, tracing them along a four-stage pipeline: sensing, signal integration, comfort modeling, and building actuation. This reveals a previously unquantified bottleneck: while all 117 studies perform sensing and 83 (71%) integrate physiological and environmental signals, only 52 (44%) build predictive models and

Heat ameliorative measures in Murrah buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) heifers during summer: effect on microclimate, thermal comfort, and behavior.

Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is the mainstay of milk production in Asian countries including India. However, the hot climate of the country remains the biggest bottleneck to exploit the potential of this species. Therefore, a study was conducted to assess the effect of heat ameliorative measures on microclimate, thermal comfort, and behavior of Murrah buffalo heifers during summer. Buffalo heifers (n = 24) between the age of 15 and 20 months with a mean body weight of 363.75 ± 11.27 kg were randomly grouped into four treatments based on their age and body weight. The heifers kept in the she

Health effects of filtering facepiece respirators: Research and clinical implications of comfort, thermal, skin, psychologic, and workplace effects.

Filtering facepiece respirators (FFR's) such as N95s have become widely used in appropriate settings for personal respiratory protection and are increasingly used beyond workplace settings. Concerns about possible adverse effects have appeared in many publications, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic led to much more widespread use. This paper synthesizes known effects based upon review of publications in PubMed since 1995, addressing effects other than pulmonary and cardiovascular (reviewed elsewhere). Findings: (1) Subjective discomfort is very frequently reported; this includes general
