The biologic half-life of gold, a subject of controversy for many years, was found to be much longer in the rat than that reported for other species in the bulk of the literature. The longer observed half-life supports recent findings in man and is more consistent with the monthly maintenance dosing normally used in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Excretion studies revealed that, after administration of gold sodium thiomalate, gold was eliminated via urinary and fecal pathways by approximately a 2:1 ratio. A 54-year-old man developed severe cholestatic jaundice and pure red cell aplasia shortly after beginning treatment with gold sodium thiomalate. Although the hepatic toxicity began to spontaneously improve, the pure red cell aplasia was progressive. Treatment with prednisone and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) infusions was followed by prompt and complete hematologic recovery. Gold induced pure red cell aplasia should be added to the list of gold induced hematologic toxicities that can be potentially reversed with NAC infusion therapy.

In this paper we study the laser-induced modification of optical properties of nanocomposite based on cadmium sulphide quantum dots encapsulated into thiomalic acid shell which were embedded into a porous silica matrix. We found red shift of luminescence of the nanocomposite when exposed to laser radiation at λ = 405 nm. Using pump-probe method and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering technique it was found that laser radiation at λ = 405 nm also increases the absorption coefficient of the nanocomposite in 15 times due to agglomeration of quantum dots. A case of allergic contact dermatitis due to gold pierced earrings is reported. The patient developed recurring redness and swelling on her earlobes a month after the wearing of pierced-type gold earrings, which was followed by the appearance of reddish nodules around the puncture marks. The aim of this study was to investigate the origins of disturbances of immunoreactivity in patients with pemphigus vulgaris. Myochrysine (gold sodium thiomalate, GSTM) injections are the therapy of choice for children with refractory juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. In this single blinded study 8 children receiving GSTM were asked to rate their discomfort after a total of 185 injections of GSTM to which were added in random fashion either 0, 0.1, or 0.25 ml of 1% lidocaine. Studies of adoptive transfer of resistance to Histoplasma capsulatum were performed with athymic nude (nu/nu) recipients and heterozygous (nu/+) donor mice. The sixth case of an allergic contact gingivostomatitis to gold crowns previously misdiagnosed as erosive lichen planus is reported. Patch tests to gold chloride (0.5%) and 0.05 cm3 intradermal gold sodium thiomalate (Myochrysine 50 mg/cm3) were positive at 48-72 h.
