Arterial complications of thoracic outlet compression have serious potential implications; however, these complications rarely appear. Between 1990 and 2006, prospectively collected data on 27 patients with arterial complications of thoracic outlet syndrome were analyzed. The causes of arterial compression were cervical rib (20 [74.1%]), abnormalities of the first thoracic rib (three [11.1%]), soft tissue anomalies (two [7.4%]), and hypertrophic callus after clavicle fracture (two [7.4%]). In all cases, a combined supraclavicular and infraclavicular approach was used. Decompression was achieve

The aim of this study was to examine the internal thoracic artery (ITA) in human foetuses. The research material consisted of 32 human foetuses (18 female, 14 male) from the 21(st) to 24(th) week of intrauterine life. After intravascular injection with white latex LBS 3060, the foetuses were fixed in 10% neutral formalin solution. The whole course of the ITA was prepared. Photographic documentation was performed with a Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital camera, and source pictures of arteries were rendered in a Digital Computer System Analysis. The ITA was evaluated with regard to its origin, length,

The lateral costal artery has sometimes been identified as the culprit for the "steal phenomenon" after coronary artery bypass grafting, besides being occasionally used for myocardial revascularization. Its branches make anastomoses with the internal thoracic artery through lateral intercostal arteries. We aim to report, on three cases, the clinical significance of a well-developed lateral costal artery after coronary artery bypass grafting. Two out of three patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery in our center between June 2010 and August 2017, applied to us with stable an

Numerous technical and physiologic problems have been described with conventional systemic-pulmonary artery shunts. We report the case of a 1-year-old girl in whom the internal thoracic artery was used to create a systemic-pulmonary artery shunt after the failure of a previous Blalock-Taussig shunt. The internal thoracic artery as an alternative systemic-pulmonary artery shunt may offer several potential advantages and can be used successfully to improve cyanotic heart disease in selected cases.

Systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunts may be useful for palliation of cyanotic congenital heart disease. We report the two cases of a 2-year-girl and a 5-year-girl in whom the internal thoracic artery was used to create a systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunt. This technic may have distinct advantages in selected cases and should be considered as an alternative during investigation of the older child who requires a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt.

BACKGROUND: Contrasting results of recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing off-pump and on-pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, as well as the lack of evidence for any survival benefit of bilateral internal thoracic artery (ITA) grafting over single ITA use, has intensified the debate about the role of the off-pump technique and bilateral ITA use in CABG surgery. We therefore investigated our 15-year experience in off-pump CABG with bilateral ITA grafting and evaluated temporal trends in preoperative characteristics and postoperative outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Statins may enhance vascular function independently of effects on cholesterol. This study investigated the ability of statins to modulate the vascular recovery of arteries used as coronary bypass grafts.
METHODS: Specimens of radial artery and left internal thoracic artery were obtained during coronary artery bypass grafting. The specimens were divided into vascular rings, which were incubated in the absence or presence of cerivastatin (10(-6) mol/L) for either 2 or 24 hours. Using an organ bath technique, endothelial function was examined using acetylcholine (10(-9) to 10(-5) mol

BACKGROUND: This investigation compared the incidence and the degree of atherosclerosis present in radial artery (RA) and internal thoracic artery segments remaining after coronary artery bypass grafting.
METHODS: One hundred seventy specimens from 102 patients were histologically analyzed, including 106 RA specimens.
RESULTS: The mean degree of pathology for the RA was 0.89 on a 0 (none) to 4 (lumen completely obliterated) scale; the mean grade of pathology for the internal thoracic artery was 0.30 (p < 0.001). Presence of diabetes, aortofemoral disease, femoral-popliteal disease, age, and

Ascending thoracic aortic dissection (ATAD) is a well-known vascular cause of sudden death. Spontaneous coronary artery dissections (SCAD) are emerging as an important cause of early-onset myocardial infarction and sudden death. Genetic variants in multiple connective tissue genes have been recognized to underlie ATAD; other genetic variants have similarly been recognized to underlie SCAD. Little data are available regarding any genetic commonality between ATAD and SCAD. Our objective is to determine and characterize any genetic overlap between genes coding for ATAD and SCAD. We identified and

Arterial occlusive disease of supraaortic vessels, particularly the subclavian and innominate arteries, is infrequent. Hemodynamically significant proximal lesions of all supraaortic arteries are uncommon and the combination with coronary artery disease is even rarer. So far, the surgical management and operative timing of patients with coexisting severe disease of brachiocephalic and heart vessels is still a matter of debate. We report the case of a patient with severe polydistrectual atherosclerosis treated with single-stage aorto-carotid, carotid-subclavian and aortocoronary bypass.

BACKGROUND: Although internal thoracic arteries (ITAs) and radial arteries (RAs) have been shown to have similar patency, RAs tend to be more vasospastic postoperatively compared with ITAs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of histamine subclass 1 (H1) receptors and histamine subclass 2 (H2) receptors on vasoreactivity in human ITAs and RAs.
METHODS: Vessels were obtained from coronary artery bypass grafting patients. Human arterial rings (2 mm) were mounted in tissue baths, and baseline contractility was determined. Histamine concentration response curves (10(-9)

In an attempt to elucidate the causes of occlusion of radial arteries used for coronary artery bypass grafts and to improve the results of these procedures, we studied the biometry and histology of the coronary, radial and left internal thoracic arteries. These arteries were harvested from 20 cadavers (13 males, 7 females). The specimens were calibrated to the various bypass graft sites using coronary calibrators, and were then submitted to histological examination to determine the structure and innervation of the vessel wall. No correlation was observed between the internal calibers of these

OBJECTIVE: To provide the incidence, origin, size and the safety area of the accessory internal thoracic artery (AITA) in the fourth intercostal space.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: One hundred and thirty two thoracic cages were dissected and examined for the presence of AITA. The origin, course, diameter and location in the fourth intercostal space of detected AITA were investigated.
RESULTS: AITA with diameter ranging from 0.6 to 3.05 (mean = 1.76 +/- 0.69) millimeters existed in 10 of 132 (7.58%) cadavers. They originated from the upper part of the internal thoracic artery, close and inferior to t

Coronary artery bypass grafting was performed successfully on a patient by anastomosing the left internal thoracic artery and its pericardiacophrenic branch to the obtuse marginal and the posterior descending coronary artery, respectively, to form a Y graft. Preoperative angiography of the internal thoracic artery had revealed the presence of an unusually large pericardiacophrenic branch almost the size of the main trunk, which allowed us to plan for bifurcated artery grafting.

Variation of the main branches of the abdominal aorta is not uncommon and its spectrum is broad. However, here we present the supradiaphragmatic origin of the coeliac artery, superior mesenteric artery, and bilateral renal arteries - a variation that has not been reported previously in the literature.
