BACKGROUND: Ventilatory failure is a well recognised complication of patients who have had a thoracoplasty for tuberculosis, but there are few data regarding the value of long term non-invasive assisted ventilation in this situation.
METHODS: Thirty two patients who had had a thoracoplasty 20-46 years previously and who had developed respiratory failure were treated with nocturnal cuirass assisted ventilation or nasal positive pressure ventilation. Their survival and changes in arterial blood gases, nocturnal oximetry, and pulmonary function tests were assessed.
RESULTS: The actuarial surviv

INTRODUCTION: Cosmetic concerns are one of the main complaints of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Several studies have shown a significant improvement in self-image scores after thoracoplasty. However, the effects of thoracoplasty on pulmonary function and clinical outcomes remain debated. The objective was to analyze the benefits and risks of thoracoplasty during AIS surgery using a hybrid construct with sublaminar bands.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this monocentric prospective cohort study, 68 patients with thoracic AIS were consecutively included between 2016 and 2017. Al

BACKGROUND: Razorback deformity with stiff thoracic scoliosis creates a complex three-dimensional deformity. Posterior spinal fusion (PSF) and thoracoplasty can correct rib hump deformity and improve patient satisfaction. However, conventional thoracoplasty may impair pulmonary function and increase complications. We present a modified thoracoplasty (MTP) technique for addressing rib hump deformity in stiff thoracic scoliosis patients, emphasizing its clinical efficacy and safety.
METHODS: This study included 44 patients with stiff thoracic scoliosis and razorback deformity who underwent surg

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Thoracoplasty, defined as the surgical resection of ribs to reduce pleural space volume, was first introduced in the late nineteenth century for the management of chronic empyema. Its use declined with the advent of effective antimicrobial therapy and advances in thoracic surgery. However, interest in thoracoplasty has reemerged in recent years. Tuberculosis and its sequelae remain prevalent globally, and complex pleural space infections continue to pose significant management challenges, particularly in patients who are not candidates for resection or in whom prior i

OBJECTIVES: Creating an aesthetically appealing result using thoracoplasty, especially when correcting extensive deformities, but only causing low morbidity, is challenging. The frequency of thoracoplasties in cases of pectus carinatum (PC) has increased due to improved experience and modified surgical techniques, resulting in low morbidity and low complication rates. The indications for surgical treatment are still controversial and, in most cases, remain aesthetic or psychological rather than physiological. However, whether cardiopulmonary function changes after surgical repair remains a mat

The patient was a 57-year-old male with lung adenocarcinoma arising in right upper lobe. Because the tumor invaded to the trunchus intermedius and B6, right upper lobe, middle lobe and S6 was resected with bronchial plasty which was performed between the main bronchus and basal bronchus. Because the bronchial fistula appeared after 12 days of operation, completion pneumonectomy was performed, and the stump of the main bronchus was covered with intercostal muscle. Although fistula of the bronchial stump did not appear, open drainage thoracotomy was performed because of deterioration of empyema

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities often suffer from tracheal stenosis due to chest deformation and brachiocephalic artery compression, which sometimes leads to serious complications, such as dying spell and tracheobrachiocephalic artery fistula. We herein described our experience of performing a novel and simple thoracoplastic procedure combined with brachiocephalic artery transection in two patients with severe chest deformation and tracheal stenosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patients were a 12-year-old female with cerebral palsy due to periventricular leukom

PURPOSE: Indications for surgical treatment for patients with pectus excavatum and carinatum are psychosocial issues, pulmonary or cardiac limitations or pain. When surgery is indicated in our institution, patients are treated with a modified thoracoplasty according to the Ravitch technique. In order to stabilize pectus excavatum, an allogenic bone strut is transplanted which does not require removal.
PATIENT AND METHODS: Seventy-one patients with a mean age of 17 years who were treated for pectus deformities between 1997 and 2007 were evaluated retrospectively.
RESULTS: The average period o

PURPOSE: Thoracoplasty is a procedure which involves rib resection from the costovertebral junction to the apex of the rib hump deformity to address the cosmetic concerns of patients of scoliosis. There is conflicting literature on its effect on pulmonary function. The present meta-analysis was conducted to review and analyze the available literature and ascertain the effect of thoracoplasty on pulmonary function.
METHODS: Search was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines on three databases. After analysis of all the search results by title, abstracts and full texts-10 studies were identifi

OBJECTIVE: Lung resection for complex aspergilloma (CA) carries high morbidity and mortality and remains controversial in high-risk patients. Cavernostomy followed by muscle-flap plombage has been recommended for patients considered unfit for resection, but subsequent muscle-flap atrophy may be a main cause of failure. We reviewed the place of a limited thoracoplasty in association with that procedure.
METHODS: Five patients complaining of haemoptysis related to CA were denied lung resection because of bilateral lung destruction (n=1), and required completion pneumonectomy (previous lobectomy

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study is to evaluate the results of thoraco-mediastinal plication for the treatment of post-pneumonectomy empyema.
METHODS: From 1 January 1985 to 1 January 2011, 30 patients underwent post-pneumonectomy empyema through a modified thoraco-mediastinal plication procedure (Andrews thoracoplasty). Indications for pneumonectomy included cancer (25 cases), tuberculosis (3 cases), and bronchiectasis (two cases). Rib resection was performed according to the topography of the cavity, ranging between 5 and 10. Neighbourhood muscle flaps were used in 22 cases but extensive mo

Bronchopleural fistula following pneumonectomy is a serious and frightening complication in chest surgery with a high mortality rate. The possibility of curing this complication using a conservative treatment is extremely poor. Below we describe a case of a patient affected by left pleural empyema due to a postpneumonectomy bronchopleural fistula. The patient had previously undergone an aortic prosthesis implantation. He was successfully treated using omental pedicle in order to cover the bronchial stump, to fill the pleural space and to protect the aortic prosthesis. He also underwent thoraco

INTRODUCTION: Video-assisted percutaneous thoracoplasty involves a complex surgical access with risk of damaging vital structures during the procedure. Historically, different traction and sternal elevation systems have been applied during the intervention to minimize the risk associated with the passage of the instruments between the sternum and the pericardium.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A new sternal traction system is presented by means of an illustrated description. Clinical and sociodemographic data were extracted from the 36 patients operated in our center for Pectus Excavatum between July
