The thymus is an endocrine organ. A unified, physiological concept of humoral regulation of the immune response emerged in the last three decades. The thymus is the primary major site of production of immunocompetent T-lymphocytes from their haematopoietic stem cells. The thymus provides a superior humoral microenvironment for the development of immunocompetent T-lymphocytes. Although yolk sac derived pre-T stem cells enter the thymus using a homing receptor, the immigration process requires also secretion of a peptide, called thymotaxin by the cells of the reticulo-epithelial (RE) network. Interactions between the immune and endocrine systems are not well studied in marsupials and monotremes. One exception to this is the phenomenon of semelparity, which is well covered in the literature as this is an unusual reproductive strategy amongst mammals and is only observed in some dasyurid and didelphid marsupials. Thymus involution provides a direct link between the endocrine and immune systems and warrants further study in marsupials and monotremes. The thymus is a primary immune tissue which is essential for overall immune function. Whilst the organ is large in juvenile animals, it

SD female rats were bilaterally adrenalectomized or sham-operated at the age of 20 days and were given dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHAS; 50 or 100 mg/kg body wt. p.o.) for 7 days. Twenty-four hours after the last administration the animals were sacrificed and levels of serum estrone, estradiol, estriol, testosterone (T), progesterone(P), aldosterone, 11-OH-corticosteroid (11-OH-CS), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA) and DHAS were determined. Uterus, ovary, pituitary gland, thyroid, thymus, liver and kidney were weighed and examined histologically. Adrenalectomy significantly reduced serum level

Hypopituitary dwarf mice are immunologically deficient. This deficiency can be overcome by injection of somatotropic hormone and thyroxin. Antibody formation in hormonally reconstituted mice as measured by the number of plaque-forming cells against sheep erythrocytes equals or surpasses that of normal mice. The number of nucleated spleen cells is increased in both normal and dward mice after treatment with hormones. The hypotrophic thymus and peripheral lymphoid tissue of dwarf mice can be reconstituted to normal by treatment with somatotropic hormone and thyroxin. Anti-somatotropic hormone an

T-cell ontogenesis has been disclosed to depend on the interactions of thymus with endocrine glands and nervous system as follows: i/ Thymic deprivation not only impaired the immunological development but also brought about the dysgenesis of pituitary anterior lobe. Conversely, hypophysectomy resulted in thymus atrophy with the disturbed immune responses. ii/ Binding of pituitary acidophilic cell hormones to their receptors on thymus epithelial cells (TECs) augmented the release of thymic hormonal peptides (THPs) in vitro. iii/ Elevation of blood glucocorticoid level after stress caused atroph

BACKGROUND: The brain and the immune systems represent the two primary adaptive systems within the body. Both are involved in a dynamic process of communication, vital for the preservation of mammalian homeostasis. This interplay involves two major pathways: the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system.
SUMMARY: The establishment of infection can affect immunoneuroendocrine interactions, with functional consequences for immune organs, particularly the thymus. Interestingly, the physiology of this primary organ is not only under the control of the central nervous

The thymus is an endocrine organ. A unified, physiological concept of humoral regulations of the immune response has emerged in the last three decades. The thymus is the major site of production of immunocompetent T lymphocytes from their hematopoietic stem cells. This complex process required direct cell to cell, receptor based interactions, as well as in situ paracrine information via the numerous cytokines and thymic hormones produced by the cells of thymic microenvironment. Thymic hormones induce in situ T-cell marker differentiation, expression and functions. These polypeptide hormones ha

Progesteron and estradiol, administered in doses equivalent to those used for therapy caused a marked transient reduction of the thymus mass, but did not affect the cellularity of other lymphoid organs. Humoral and cellular immune response of the hormone-treated mice was normal at the time of thymus involution. The same was true for the stem-cell differentiation capacity. The remaining thymus cells after hormone treatment showed increased DNA-synthesis.

The thymus is a critical immune organ with endocrine and immune functions that plays important roles in the physiological and pathological processes of the body. However, with aging, the thymus undergoes degenerative changes leading to decreased production and output of naive T cells and the secretion of thymic hormones and related cytokines, thereby promoting the occurrence and development of various age-associated diseases. Therefore, identifying essential processes that regulate age-associated thymic involution is crucial for long-term control of thymic involution and age-associated disease

Objective: This study investigated the impact of maternal subclinical hypothyroidism on fetal thymus size and development and explored how inadequate thyroid hormone production in pregnant women affects the fetal thymus. Methods: Conducted at the Giresun Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Pediatrics Training and Research Hospital, this case-control study involved 86 pregnant women, 43 with hypothyroidism and 43 without. Maternal thyroid function was assessed using TSH and free T4 levels, and fetal thymus size and thymus-thorax ratio were measured using ultrasound. Exclusion criteria were chronic hype

The interrelations of circannual rhythms of the functional state of pineal gland, hypophysis, adrenal cortex, thymus in healthy women and men from 20 to 79 years were studied. Fluctuations of melatonin, ACTH, cortisol and thymic serum factor, which were exchanged in aging (the season peaks of hormones and its acrophase) were found in blood of healthy 20-29 years old people. The changes of rhythmicity of indices were in male earlier (pineal gland and hypophysis over 30 years, thymus and adrenal cortex over 40 years) and more impressive than in women. The aging changes of pineal gland function's

Ozone exposure induces neuroendocrine stress response, which causes lymphopenia. It was hypothesized that ozone-induced increases in stress hormones will temporally follow changes in circulating granulocytes, monocytes- and lymphocyte subpopulations. The goal of this study was to chronicle the changes in circulating stress hormones, cytokines, and leukocyte trafficking during 4 h exposure to ozone. Male Wistar Kyoto rats were exposed to air or ozone (0.4 or 0.8 ppm) for 0.5, 1, 2, or 4 h. After each time point, circulating stress hormones, cytokines, and lung gene expression were assessed alon

Snell's pituitary dwarf mice (dw) were used for studies on the relationship between hypophysis and lymphoid organs. The age-dependent changes of thymus or spleen weights of dwarf mice were compared with those of normal littermates. The suppression of growth of the thymus or spleen in dwarf mice was recognized at 5th day of age. Although involution of the thymus varied among animals, a strong positive correlation was demonstrated between relative thymus weight and body weight in 30 approximately 40 days old dwarf mice. Lymphoid organs of dwarf mice were reconstituted by injection of growth horm

Morphological changes of the T cell immune system compartments (thymus and spleen) and the steroid hormone producing glands (adrenal and testis) in the submandibular-ectomized (SMx) male mice of CBA/H strain were analyzed. Thymus, spleen, testis and adrenal gland were weighed and processed for the morphological examination by light- and electron-microscopy. The serum level of testosterone was evaluated by radioimmunoassay. No weight and morphological changes were observed in the testis and adrenal gland, and the testosterone level in sera was not changed after SMx. These results indicate that

Growth hormone (GH) is a classic pituitary-derived hormone crucial to body growth and metabolism. In the pituitary gland, GH production is stimulated by GH-releasing hormone and inhibited by somatostatin. GH secretion can also be induced by other peptides, such as ghrelin, which interacts with receptors present in somatotropic cells. It is well established that GH acts directly on target cells or indirectly by stimulating the production of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), particularly IGF-1. Notably, such somatotropic circuitry is also involved in the development and function of immune cell

A major process through which the immune system becomes tolerant to self-proteins involves the deletion of self-reactive clones in the thymus, but clonal deletion is not single mechanisms of thymic tolerance. There is now much evidence that intrathymic antigen expression results in anergy induction of T helper type-1 (Th1) clones in the periphery. Blood-thymus barrier is most important structure for prevention of unwanted penetration of antigens into the thymus. Impermeability of the barrier restrain induction of acquired thymic tolerance on unwanted antigens like microbes and tumor cells. Nev

Crosstalk exists between the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, and perturbations in these interactions have been associated with disease. This includes production of neuroendocrine factors that alter immune system activity and increase susceptibility to or severity of immune-related conditions, such as myasthenia gravis (MG)--a T-cell-dependent, B-cell-mediated autoimmune disorder. MG results from impairment of transmission to the neuromuscular junction and involves the thymus--especially in early-onset disease, but the exact mechanism by which the thymus impacts disease is unclear. MG a
