Thymolipoma is a rare, benign tumour in the anterior mediastinum, representing about 2-9% of thymus neoplasms. It consists of fat tissue mixed with thymus tissue and is often discovered incidentally. Symptoms may occur due to compression of nearby structures. In this case, a 41-year-old woman with upper back pain and shortness of breath was diagnosed after an MRI showed a large lipomatous tumour in the mediastinum. The tumour was surgically removed, and pathology confirmed thymolipoma.

Primary mediastinal neoplasms encompass a long list of histologically diverse lesions that can arise from a wide variety of mediastinal structures. Recent advances in diagnostic techniques have considerably enhanced the evaluation of the mediastinum with use of noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures. In adults, most primary mediastinal neoplasms can be classified in one of four categories: thymus-derived neoplasms, neurogenic tumors, lymphomas, or germ cell neoplasms. In children, neurogenic tumors (especially neuroblastomas) and lymphomas are most frequently encountered. Because of the

Pten/Mmac1+/- heterozygous mice exhibited neoplasms in multiple organs including the endometrium, liver, prostate, gastrointestinal tract, thyroid, and thymus. Loss of the wild-type allele was detected in neoplasms of the thymus and liver. Surprisingly, tumors of the gastrointestinal epithelium developed in association with gut lymphoid tissue. Tumors of the endometrium, thyroid, prostate, and liver were not associated with lymphoid tissue and appeared to be highly mitotic. In addition, these mice have nonneoplastic hyperplasia of lymph nodes that was caused by an inherited defect in apoptosis

The pathologic classification of neuroendocrine neoplasms has evolved over the past decades, as new understanding of the biological behavior, histologic characteristics, and genetic features have emerged. Nonetheless, many aspects of the classification systems remain confusing or controversial. Despite these difficulties, much progress has been made in determining the features predicting behavior. Genetic findings have helped establish relationships among different types of neuroendocrine neoplasms and revealed potential therapeutic targets. This review summarizes the current approach to the d

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus is an extremely rare malignant mediastinal neoplasm, and to our knowledge, only 13 cases have been reported. We report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus that was seen in a 53-yr-old man with right chest pain. Chest CT scan showed a huge, cystic mass having a focal solid portion with direct invasion of the adjacent anterior chest wall and pericardium in the anterior mediastinum. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus should be included in the differential diagnosis for masses of the anterior mediastinum associated with extensive cystic chang

Conventional radiographs show the mediastinum to be the most frequent location of thoracic masses in children. The compartmental approach to evaluation of pediatric mediastinal masses is advised. Compartmental localization and lesion internal characteristics are best determined by cross-sectional imaging techniques. These techniques as well as the causes and significance of the common pediatric mediastinal masses are discussed. Imaging of the thymus is emphasized because normal thymic tissue can mimic pathologic conditions and the thymus is a common thoracic location for neoplasms in children.

Immature T cell neoplasms in three young Holstein cattle with neoplastic involvement of the thymus are described. Case 1, with a precursor T lymphoblastic leukemia (calf form of leukosis), was an 86-day-old female calf. The leukemia was characterized by replacement of the bone marrow and spleen by leukemia cells, but preservation of epithelial frameworks throughout the thymus. The other two neoplasms were thymic γδ T cell lymphomas, which were observed in a 246-day-old steer (case 2) and a 16-month-old heifer (case 3). Histological examination revealed obliteration of the normal thymic archite

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus is an unusual, but well-recognized variant of thymic malignant tumors. Its biologic behavior generally depends on the degree of differentiation and the amount of cellular atypia. High grade tumors can be aggressive neoplasms with a tendency to invade and develop metastases. We report on a case of a 53-year-old man, who presented chest discomfort, dyspnea, and weakness. As heart function tests were normal, the patient underwent radiologic examination, which showed a well-demarcated mass in the anterior mediastinum. Histologic examination of the surgically

AIMS: Cases of intrathyroidal epithelial thymoma (ITET)/carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) were examined for CD5 immunoreactivity, a feature of true thymic carcinoma, but not other thymic epithelial neoplasms or carcinomas of other sites. ITET/CASTLE, a rare, low-grade malignant neoplasm arising within the thyroid gland which resembles lymphoepithelioma-like and squamous cell carcinoma of the thymus, is postulated to arise from remnants of branchial pouch capable of thymic differentiation, but thymic differentiation in this neoplasm remains unproven.

Expression of SV40 large T antigen was correlated with the development of pathology in three lines of transgenic mice. Immunohistochemical detection of large T revealed positive cells only in subsets of choroid plexus epithelium, thymus and renal tubular epithelium, which was first observed during the first month of post-natal life. Morphologic abnormalities became apparent several weeks later. Only some of the choroid plexus cells which expressed T antigen progressed to form neoplasms, suggesting the need for one or more secondary events to effect transformation. Tumors did not develop in thy

The ectopic cervical thymoma is a rare site for a thymus neoplasm. It is frequently confused with cyst or with later neck mass of uncertain diagnosis until a histological diagnosis is made. Thymic neoplasms normally arise in the mediastinum, causing signs and symptoms of compression of the adjacent structures. Although rare, malignant thymomas may develop from an ectopic thymus, situated in the thyroid gland (Miyauchi et al., 1985; Matsuura et al., 2004), the neck (Yan et al., 2010; Yao et al., 2010; Jung et al., 1999), the lungs (Myers et al., 2007), and the heart (Miller et al., 2005). Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) has emerged as a strong diagnostic tool for the diagnosis and staging of neoplasms. Uptake in the thymus at (18)F-FDG PET complicates the assessment of mediastinal involvement by tumor in children and young adults. Increased thymic (18)F-FDG uptake may represent normal physiologic uptake but may also indicate the presence of thymic hyperplasia, lymphomatous infiltration, primary thymic neoplasm, or metastatic disease. Familiarity with the patterns of (18)F-FDG uptake that characterize these pathologic conditions is crucial

Anterior mediastinal neoplasms are known to be causes of pressure symptoms on the heart and great vessels. This report describes a case of true thymic hyperplasia, a rare non-neoplastic condition, and speculates that pressure from this hyperplastic thymus may have produced a cardiac murmur.

Carcinoid tumour of the thymus with systemic manifestations: a radiological and pathological study. Following recent reports of an unusual mediastinal tumour described as `mediastinal endocrine neoplasm of probable thymic origin, related to carcinoid tumour' (Rosai and Higa, 1972), a further case, in a 72-year-old man, has been studied. Polyarthropathy was the presenting feature, and the patient also had clubbing of the fingers and clinical evidence of a probable proximal myopathy an

Carcinoid tumor of the thymus is a rare neoplasm. Formerly confused with thymoma, a tumor of thymic epithelial cells, carcinoid tumor of the thymus has recently been shown to arise from cells of neuroendocrine origin that are normally present in the thymus. About half of the tumors are either functionally active (usually producing Cushing's syndrome) or are found in association with other endocrine tumors, as part of a multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome. The remainder occur as symptomatic or asymptomatic anterior mediastinal masses, clinically indistinguishable from thymoma. At least 30% of

Hematopoietic neoplasms represent about 1% of all laryngeal neoplasms. MALT lymphoma arises from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue and is associated with chronic inflammatory disease. Patients with Sjögren syndrome have a higher risk for development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (MALT lymphoma). To date, only cases of MALT lymphoma of the salivary glands, thymus and stomach associated with Sjögren syndrome have been published. We present the case of a MALT lymphoma of the larynx associated with Sjögren syndrome. Radiation and chemotherapy are the first line of therapy as published in the literature.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a subtype of epithelial neoplasms commonly found in salivary glands, but can also be seen in the thymus. Diagnosing MEC of the thymus is sometimes challenging due to its histological similarities with adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC). This case report describes a 64-year-old female with a history of metastatic endometrial adenocarcinoma who presented to an oncology clinic with a thymic mass as well as multiple mass lesions in the liver, bone, and abdominal wall. Initially diagnosed as thymic ASC based on histopathology, further genomic profiling revealed a CRTC1/

Tumours of the thymus include heterogenic group of benign and malignant organ-specific (thymomas and carcinoma) and organ-nonspecific (neuroendocrine, germinogenic tumours, lymphomas and others) neoplasms. Histologic classifications are now the most useful for the correlation with prognosis and clinical manifestations. It is obligatory to do verification of the progression stage.

Carcinoma showing thymus-like elements (CASTLE) is a rare neoplasm of the thyroid gland resembling lymphoepithelioma-like and squamous cell carcinoma of the thymus and is thought to arise from ectopic thymic tissue within the thyroid gland or rudimentary branchial pouches along the thymic line. Using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), chromosomal imbalances have been detected in several types of thymomas and thymic carcinomas. To evaluate whether there are hints of an underlying sequence in the pathogenesis of CASTLE analogue to those found in thymomas and thymic carcinomas, we evaluated

The majority of thymic lymphomas are either lymphoblastic lymphoma, large B cell lymphoma or Hodgkin's disease, and other types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma are rare. A case of low-grade B cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) in the thymus is reported. A 55-year-old Japanese female with a history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) complained of back pain. A mediastinal tumor was identified by computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and the thymus was resected through median sternotomy. The solid and nodular tumor had several small satellite extensions and was complete
