A 2-month-old female infant with respiratory distress, cyanosis and swallowing difficulties following birth was referred to our hospital by the pediatric clinic. Flexible fiber optic laryngoscopic examination of the patient revealed a red-purple smooth-surfaced mass inside the tongue base and vallecula. No additional features were identified by otorhinolaryngological examination. A 2-cm cystic mass located at the tongue base was identified by neck computed tomography (CT) imaging. The cystic mass was marsupialized transorally with the assistance of the da Vinci robotic surgery system (TORS) an

The authors report a rare case of lingual thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) which is being treated by non-conventional technique of intraoral marsupialisation and the authors also review the embryology of TGDC and its diagnosis. The patient was operated upon by intraoral route and the cyst was marsupialised. There is no recurrence in the past 2-year follow-up. This approach avoids unnecessary scar and postoperative morbidity associated with opening neck planes and removing the central hyoid as indicated in conventional technique.

Lingual thyroid is a rare lesion caused by maldescent of the thyroid gland. It is an important cause of a mass on the posterior third of the tongue, and may coexist with other developmental abnormalities such as thyroglossal cyst. The diagnosis is made by radioisotope scan. Treatment is indicated in the presence of symptoms and consists initially of thyroxine. Severe or unresponsive cases require complete excision through a lateral pharyngotomy. Hypothyroidism is common postoperatively, but may be avoided in some cases by transplantation of excised tissue. We present a case report and review o…

Thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) is one of the more common causes of a pediatric neck mass. Lingual TGDC, which is located at the base of the tongue, is an unusual variant. Because of the oral pharyngeal location, lingual TGDC may cause dysphagia and respiratory distress. Previous investigators have advocated the use of a formal Sistrunk procedure for lingual TGDC. Herein the authors describe three children with a lingual TGDC in whom marsupialization of the cyst was performed, without excision. The follow-up period ranges from 2 to 5 years, and there has been no recurrence. Because of the low mo

BACKGROUND: Thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) is the most common congenital cyst in the neck and is removed by the Sistrunk procedure. This surgery involves a horizontal skin incision over the cyst that may leave a noticeable scar on the front of the neck. Therefore, this study examined the clinical outcomes and cosmetic benefits of the Sistrunk procedure by an incision in the submental area that is not easily visible from the front.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational study was performed on 152 patients who underwent the Sistrunk procedure by a submental approach to remove TGDC at a univer

A 61-year-old man died suddenly after a brief history of shortness of breath and hemoptysis. At autopsy he had lobar pneumonia involving the right upper and left lower lobes of the lung. Significantly there was also a 30 × 20 mm (in cross-section) thyroglossal duct cyst compressing the upper airway. Death was attributed to respiratory failure due to the combined effects of lobar pneumonia (cultures positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae) and airway narrowing from a thyroglossal duct cyst. Although such cysts are usually found in childhood they may on occasion be diagnosed in adults. Despite bei

Thyroglossal duct cyst of the tongue is a rare entity. Occurrence in the anterior part of the tongue is exceptional. We report in this paper a rare case of thyroglossal cyst of the anterior part of the tongue, discovered in a five-days-old newborn at delivery. Images have shown a cystic mass with homogenous liquid content. A transoral complete resection of the lesion was performed, with no postoperative complication. The histological analysis confirm the diagnosis of lingual thyroglossal duct cyst. There were no recurrence with a follow-up of eight months.

Thyroglossal duct cysts arise from remnants of embryonic thyroglossal duct that connects the foramen cecum at the base of the tongue to the thyroid gland. The remnants enlarge secondary to secretions from the epithelial lining. Usually, thyroglossal cysts present as non-tender masses. However, they may also become infected, produce fistulas or give hoarseness and dysphagia. Rarely, especially if the mass is located at the base of the tongue, airway obstruction and dyspnea can ensue. This unusual presentation has been mainly seen in very young children and has caused death in about half of thes…

Thyroglossal duct carcinoma is a rare malignancy that is usually diagnosed postoperatively. Approximately 150 cases have been reported in the literature. Eighty-five percent of these were papillary carcinomas. Controversies exist concerning its nature and treatment. In this report, we present an 11-year-old boy with an anterior cervical cystic mass originating in the thyroglossal duct. After a primary Sistrunk procedure, the cyst and tract extending to the foramen caecum at the base of the tongue in continuity with the midportion of the hyoid bone were resected. Histopathologic study demonstra

AIM: To describe the magnetic resonance (MR) features of thyroglossal duct cysts (TDC) in adults.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with TDC underwent MR imaging to obtain T1- and T2-weighted images and T2-weighted fat saturation images. In addition, contrast enhanced images were obtained in five patients.
RESULTS: The signal intensity of TDC was of that of a simple cyst in seven (44%) patients, yielding high signal intensity on T2- and low signal intensity on T1-weighted images. In nine (56%), the signal intensity was either intermediate or high on T1-weighted images, the T2 signal int

Thyroglossal duct cysts and branchial cleft anomalies are important in the differential diagnosis of cervical lesions. Both lesions are common and are seen more commonly in the child than in the adult. Considerable discomfort and morbidity may be associated with severe infections occurring in both of these lesions. Of importance is the observation that once these congenital cysts become infected, subsequent surgical removal is very difficult, and recurrence may result. For these reasons it is essential that the clinician become familiar with the embryology of these lesions, which is vital to t

Deep, midline cervical cysts clinically diagnosed as thyroglossal duct cysts (TDCs), have been pathologically classified as dermoid cysts because of the presence of skin appendages and a squamous epithelial lining. In 75 midline cervical masses preoperatively diagnosed as TDC, we could classify only 54 as TDC, using the preexisting criteria of squamous or ciliated columnar epithelial lining associated with a tract or thyroid follicles. Eleven cysts were reclassified as dermoid, and six were called "mixed" because of features of both dermoid cysts (skin appendages) and TDC (epithelial tract or

A review of a series of 63 patients suggests that a high incidence of recurrence occurs following surgery for this condition. Histological examination demonstrates that this is due to failure to remove the central portion of hyoid bone and inadequate dissection of the tract into the tongue base. To overcome these problems, an en bloc anterior neck dissection is recommended which will encompass multiple duct formation associated with the tract.

Thyroglossal duct cysts are the most common midline neck swelling in childhood, occurring in the line of descent of the thyroid, anywhere between the foramen caecum and the isthmus of the thyroid. However, the most common location is the thyrohyoid. We present a case of an adolescent male who presented with a suprasternal mass, which was clinically diagnosed as a branchial cyst. However, on histopathology, it was diagnosed to be a suprasternal thyroglossal cyst. With this article, we aim to highlight the importance of keeping thyroglossal cyst as a differential diagnosis for midline neck swell…

OBJECTIVE: To describe the diagnosis and management of lingual thyroglossal duct cyst in newborns.
CASE REPORT: A one-month-old girl presenting with inspiratory stridor and chest wall retraction was referred to our department for management of stridor. Upper airway endoscopy and neck CT scan showed a round mass at the base of the tongue causing upper airway obstruction. Computed tomography showed a well-circumscribed, low-density lesion at the base of the tongue. Endoscopic marsupialization of this lesion was performed under general anaesthesia. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosi

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 14-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was evaluated because of a large fluid-filled mass on the ventral aspect of the neck that failed to resolve after repeated draining.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Radiography and computed tomography revealed a fluid-filled mass 13 cm in diameter extending from the level of the first cervical vertebra to the manubrium. No evidence of metastasis was seen. Cytologic examination of the fluid revealed it to be a transudate with a T4 concentration considered to be normal. Incisional biopsy of the cyst wall was performed and led to a diagnos
