Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a new disease category involving many organ systems, including the endocrine system in general and the thyroid in particular. Since an initial association was made between hypothyroidism and autoimmune (IgG4-related) pancreatitis, more forms of IgG4-related thyroid disease (IgG4-RTD) have been recognized. Four subcategories of IgG4-RTD have so far been identified: Riedel thyroiditis (RT), fibrosing variant of Hashimoto thyroiditis (FVHT), IgG4-related Hashimoto thyroiditis, and Graves disease with elevated IgG4 levels. Although a male predominance

Iodine, an essential component of the hormones produced by the thyroid gland, is widely but unevenly distributed in the earth's environment. Great difference exists in the iodine nutritional status of populations residing in different region. Both iodine deficiency and iodine excess can injure the thyroid gland. Iodine deficiency tigers endemic goiter, cretinism, and hyperthyroidism, while iodine excess can result in high iodine goiter, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, iodine-induced hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism; also, iodine deficiency or excess may affect the histological type of thyr

OBJECTIVES: Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) is frequently accompanied by other organ-specific diseases. We investigated the frequency of the association AITD-Biermer's disease (BD) in patients with AITD by investigating the prevalence of intrinsic factor antibodies (IF-Ab).
DESIGN AND METHODS: Sera from 113 patients with AITD (hypo- or hyperthyroidism) were screened for the presence of type I IF-Ab with a competitive automated immunoassay based. Matched sera from 113 patients with dysthyroidism (not AITD) were tested.
RESULTS: Four IF-Ab positive patients suffered from AITD. BD was known f

BACKGROUND: In cases of thyroid diseases, many of the symptoms arise on the skin. In this study, we aimed to detect and compare the skin findings and accompanying dermatoses of patients with thyroid diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 220 patients with thyroid diseases, who did not have any medical cure, and 90 healthy individuals as a control group attended our study. All of the cases were examined, and the skin findings and/or dermatoses were recorded. The skin findings in the patients and the control group were compared statistically.
RESULTS: Among 220 cases, in 125 (56.8%) skin findings we

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) are the far most common autoimmune disorders, their prevalence in Western countries exceeding 5% of the general population. In the large majority of individual cases the clinical impact of AITD is not severe, however, their widespread diffusion renders them a significant health problem. AITD are heterogeneous in their clinical presentation: the two main forms are autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) and Graves' disease (GD). Although they probably share, at least in part, a common genetic background and may occur in the same family as well as in the same individual, t

Goiter is endemic in some parts of Nigeria. Kano is populated by people from various geographical areas. There has not been any report of thyroid gland diseases pattern in Kano, hence the need for this study. A retrospective review of 75 cases of thyroid gland diseases seen and managed at Aminu Kano Teaching hospital, Kano over a 5-year period forms the basis for this study. Of the 75 patients with goiters 69(92% ) were females. Simple non-toxic goiter was the most common histologic type accounting for 51 (68.0% ) of cases. There were 10 cases (13.3% ) of thyrotoxicosis, 4 (5.4% )with follicul

The incidence ratio of thyrotoxicosis among 14 patients with thyroid diseases associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was compared with that in 7686 patients with thyroid diseases, to find the possible correlation between thyrotoxicosis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Thyrotoxicosis did not predominate over other thyroid diseases in the 14 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Thus, the occurrence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy does not appear to be associated with thyrotoxicosis.

The gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in maintaining the homeostasis of the digestive and immune systems. Dysbiosis compromises the intestinal barrier and triggers systemic inflammation, thereby contributing to metabolic and immune dysregulation. Emerging evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship between the gut microbiota and thyroid function. The microbiota influences the absorption and metabolism of micronutrients essential for thyroid hormone synthesis, including iodine, selenium, iron, and zinc. Dysbiosis enhances intestinal permeability, facilitating the translocation of bacterial

Thyroid disorders are known to cause neuropsychiatric manifestations. Various neuropsychiatric manifestations are depression, dementia, mania, and autoimmune Hashimoto encephalopathy. Numerous investigations carried out in the previous 50-60 years have been evaluated critically. The pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric symptoms of thyroid diseases is described in the current study and its link with autoimmune Hashimoto encephalopathy is also discussed. Furthermore, this paper also describes the association between thyroid-stimulating hormones and cognitive impairment. Hypothyroidism is associat

The human microbiome plays an integral role in health. In particular, it is important for the development, differentiation, and maturation of the immune system, 70% of which resides in the intestinal mucosa. Microbiome studies conducted to date have revealed an association between disturbances in the microbiota (dysbiosis) and various pathological disorders, including changes in host immune status. Autoimmune thyroid diseases are one of the most common organ-specific autoimmune disorders, with a worldwide prevalence higher than 5%. The predominant autoimmune thyroid diseases are Hashimoto's th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Thyroid disorders, especially hypothyroidism, are known to be associated with pericardial diseases. The aim of this paper is to review the current knowledge of the pericardial manifestations of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
RECENT FINDINGS: Many reports have described associations between dysthyroidism, which encompasses hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, and several pericardial diseases, including acute pericarditis, constrictive pericarditis, pericardial effusion, and tamponade. The diagnosis of dysthyroidism-induced pericardial diseases consists of a combination o

Epidemiological studies aimed at defining the association of thyroid diseases with extra-thyroidal malignancies (EM) have aroused considerable interest in the possibility of revealing common genetic and environmental factors underlying disease etiology and progression. Over the years, multiple lines of evidence indicated a significant relationship between thyroid carcinomas and other primary EM, especially breast cancer. For the latter, a prominent association was also found with benign thyroid diseases. In particular, a meta-analysis revealed an increased risk of breast cancer in patients wit

Increasing evidence suggests that epigenetic modifications, including changes in DNA methylation, covalent modifications of histone tails, and gene silencing mediated by non-coding RNA molecules, play a substantial role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders and might be seen as the result of environmental insults that trigger these conditions. Studies in cells and tissues of patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD), and particularly in Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), are increasingly revealing altered epigenetic marks and resultant deregulation of gene expr

Thyroid hormones are essential for skeletal development and are important regulators of bone maintenance in adults. Childhood hypothyroidism causes delayed skeletal development, retarded linear growth and impaired bone mineral accrual. Epiphyseal dysgenesis is evidenced by classic features of stippled epiphyses on X-ray. In severe cases, post-natal growth arrest results in a complex skeletal dysplasia. Thyroid hormone replacement stimulates catch-up growth and bone maturation, but recovery may be incomplete dependent on the duration and severity of hypothyroidism prior to treatment. A severe p

In this review we summarize recent opinions on the possible role of vitamin D in the risk of thyroid diseases development. It may be concluded from the available data that vitamin D deficiency, particularly levels below 12.5 ng/ml should be considered as an additional, but important risk factor for development of thyroid autoimmunity, both chronic autoimmune thyroiditis and Graves' disease. A higher risk of Graves' disease development is also associated with several polymorphisms in the gene encoding for vitamin D binding protein and for the specific receptor of active form of vitamin D - 1,25

Thyroid diseases are very common in women of reproductive age. The aim of this study was to review the current evidence on physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of women with thyroid disorders that are currently seeking fertility, undergoing assisted reproduction technologies (ART) or being pregnant. Normal thyroid function is essential for normal function of the gonadal axis, thus important in maintaining normal reproductive capacity. On the contrary, any type of thyroid dysfunction may reduce the likelihood of pregnancy; the latter can be restored to normal after appropriate
