Background. Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune vesiculobullous disease, affecting the skin and mucous membranes. It is reported to be associated with other autoimmune diseases including autoimmune thyroid diseases. However we report herein a case of pemphigus vulgaris associated with autonomous toxic nodule. Case Presentation. A 51-year-old woman was evaluated for blisters and erosions that develop on her trunk, face, and extremities, with a five-year history of progressively enlarging neck mass, and a past medical history of pemphigus vulgaris seven years ago. The condition was associated wi

All ultrasound examinations for thyroid nodule should include a malignancy risk assessment based on the markedly hypoechoic nature of the nodule, presence of microcalcifications, ill-defined margins, nodule with shape taller than wide and intra-nodular hypervascularity at color Doppler. In patients with multinodular thyroid gland, precise nodule mapping is necessary to allow accurate follow-up of each nodule, correctly identify which nodule(s) is hyper functioning on iodine scan (if done) and guide fine needle aspiration (FNA) of suspicious nodules. As such, all reports of US examinations for

Schwannomas are rare tumours arising from peripheral nerve linings. A case of a schwannoma arising from cervical sympathetic chain is presented. The clinical presentation was that of a right solitary thyroid nodule. Intra-operatively, a 3 x 3 cm encapsulated lesion was seen arising posterior to the vagas nerve and attached to the cervical sympathetic trunk. The lesion was excised together with part of the nerve. Post-operatively, the patient developed Horner's syndrome that persisted. Unitil 2000, less that 50 cased of cervical sympathetic schwannoma have been described in the Englidh literatu

Hemorrhagic thyroid nodules are rare in the pediatric age group. They present as rapidly enlarging neck masses. Diagnostic modalities available are laboratory evaluation, ultrasound, radionuclide imaging, and fine needle aspiration. Depending on the pattern of growth of the lesion, one may observe or proceed with surgery. A rapidly enlarging thyroid mass raises the suspicion of malignancy, and hemorrhagic nodules, though rare, must be considered in the differential diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: To report two cases of thyrotoxicosis associated with amiodarone therapy and to discuss how the presence of a thyroid nodule alters management.
METHODS: We describe two patients with amiodarone-induced hyperthyroidism, review the mechanisms of disease, and outline a strategy for decision making relative to treatment in the presence of a thyroid nodule.
RESULTS: Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis occurs by two mechanisms: a direct toxic effect and iodine loading. This condition may be treated medically or surgically, but when discontinuation of amiodarone therapy is not possible and

A 37-year-old male with a history of neck irradiation in childhood presented with thyrotoxicosis due to an autonomous thyroid nodule. Adjacent to the nodule was a radiation scar from radiotherapy administered 35 years previously. Hemithyroidectomy was performed and histological examination excluded malignant change. Long term follow-up should continue to detect possible nodule formation in the contralateral lobe.

OBJECTIVES: Fetal and neonatal hyperthyroidism are most commonly seen in patients whose mothers have Graves' disease. Rarely, it can be caused by non-autoimmune conditions. As these conditions are rare, the workup and treatment is not uniform and can lead to persistent symptoms and long-term negative health effects.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a patient with congenital hyperthyroidism from a toxic adenoma presenting with fetal tachycardia. The patient was initially managed medically after birth, but was eventually treated with thyroidectomy.
CONCLUSIONS: This case report highlig

CONTEXT: Thyroid nodule size is routinely measured, although its impact on thyroid cancer risk is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate the association of nodule size upon cancer risk.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis at an academic hospital with 4955 consecutive patients evaluated between 1995 and 2009.
INTERVENTION: Ultrasound and ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of nodules >1 cm was done. Indeterminate and malignant nodules were referred for surgery, and histopathology was reviewed.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The presence and his

Most thyroid nodules discovered during pregnancy are benign. In this article, we propose a pragmatic attitude for the diagnosis and treatment of such nodules, insisting particularly on the importance of thyroid echography and fine needle aspiration. For women who have successfully been treated for thyroid cancer before pregnancy, we discuss the adaptation of thyroxine substitution when they become pregnant, the obstetrical and fetal risks (spontaneous miscarriage, fetal abnormalities of the thyroid gland and others), and also potential later risks for the child, in relation with previous radio

The aim of this paper is to synthetically focus on current views on the use of radioiodine for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in single autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFN). Radioiodine administration represents a simple and effective alternative to surgical ablation of AFN, especially in elderly patients with small nodules (< 3 cm diameter). Radioiodine is very selectively accumulated in the thyroid, where it can deliver its energy without virtually affecting any other organ. Since its first use in 1942, 131I is (as Na131I) still the radioisotope of choice, due to easy availabilit

Indications for the surgical removal of autonomous nodule are mainly based upon the failure of therapeutical options. The histological definition may be advantageous for detecting the rare but possible association between autonomous goiter and carcinoma of the thyroid. In personal experience, based on 176 hyperfunctioning goiter (among which there were 40 cases of autonomous nodules) 6 carcinomas of the gland were observed, 2 of these were associated with autonomous nodules. The extension of thyroidectomy is related to the size of the adenomas considering the incidence of postoperative complic

A definitive evaluation of different therapeutic approaches to patients with papillary and follicular thyroid carcinomas requires a prospective multicenter long-term study, with careful documentation of variations in histologic classification and all other factors that can possibly influence prognosis. Until such information is available, every patient with a thyroid nodule should be given the treatment that offers the best prospect for cure to the greatest possible number of patients; this treatment appears to be hemithyroidectomy for benign unilateral thyroid tumors and total thyroidectomy f

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has gained recognition as a highly effective treatment for benign thyroid nodules (BTNs). However, post-procedural thyroid function changes have been reported.
OBJECTIVES: This study specifically focuses on the potential link between changes in thyroid function and the volume reduction ratio (VRR) of treated nodules. Additionally, it seeks to evaluate whether fluctuations in thyroid function at mid-term follow-up can serve as early indicators for the development of long-term hypothyroidism following RFA.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS:

Cribriform-morular thyroid carcinoma is a rare type of thyroid cancer. It has a strong association with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a hereditary genetic disorder that predisposes individuals to the development of numerous polyps in the colon and rectum. We describe the case of a young female patient who presented with an enlarging goiter, notably without detectable thyroid nodules or masses on ultrasound, who after total thyroidectomy was found to have cribriform-morular thyroid carcinoma. This diagnosis led to genetic testing and diagnosis of FAP syndrome. We demonstrate that this r

Primary thyroid lymphoma, although a rare malignancy, can arise in common chronic inflammatory conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Incidental finding of a thyroid nodule with chronic thyroid inflammation warrants further investigation. Early detection of malignancy can play a vital role in improved outcomes. We report a case of a 60-year-old male who presented to the clinic for a routine visit. An enlarged, firm, non-tender thyroid gland was appreciated on exam with high thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level. Fine needle aspiration of the mass revealed nonspecific atypical lymphocyte

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the detection of thyroid nodule calcifications on ultrasound and their relationship to thyroid carcinoma.
METHODS: Microcalcifications (≤2 mm) and macro calcifications (>2 mm) on preoperative ultrasound examination of thyroid and lymph nodes were compared with postoperative pathological diagnoses in 4186 patients undergoing thyroid surgery.
RESULTS: Higher incidences of micro- and macrocalcifications were found in patients with thyroid carcinoma than in those with benign disease. The incidence of malignant disease was significantly higher in patients with m

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is still controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of coexistence of PTC with AT versus that of the coexistence of benign nodules with AT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional retrospective study including patients operated on for thyroid nodules from January 2011, to April 2021. The frequency of papillary carcinomas cooccurring with AT was compared to that of benign nodules cooccurring with AT, which was assessed based on cytopathological diagnosis after thyr

BACKGROUND Thyroid nodules, common in adults, especially females and older individuals, are mostly asymptomatic. While the nodules are largely benign, distinguishing malignant lesions is crucial. Overdiagnosis and overtreatment pose risks. Knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) surveys can identify knowledge gaps and inform targeted education; however, no studies have explored this in Chinese patients with thyroid nodules. This study aimed to investigate the KAP toward thyroid nodules among patients with thyroid nodules. MATERIAL AND METHODS This web-based cross-sectional study was conducted
