The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei, is the most important pest of coffee throughout the world, causing losses estimated at US $500 million/year. The thrips Karnyothrips flavipes was observed for the first time feeding on immature stages of H. hampei in April 2008 from samples collected in the Kisii area of Western Kenya. Since the trophic interactions between H. hampei and K. flavipes are carried out entirely within the coffee berry, and because thrips feed by liquid ingestion, we used molecular gut-content analysis to confirm the potential role of K. flavipes as a predator of H. hamp

The western flower thrip (WFT) Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) is a serious agricultural pest with a wide host range which has developed resistance to several groups of insecticides. In this study, the effect of insecticide resistance on WFT host adaptability was explored by examining changes in detoxification enzyme activities and thrip development, and reproduction on preferred and less preferred host plants, eggplant Solanum melongena L. and broad bean Vicia faba L., respectively. Thrips were screened with spinetoram on kidney bean for six generations. Activities of glutathione S-tran

To help understand the mechanisms of gene rearrangement in the mitochondrial (mt) genomes of hemipteroid insects, we sequenced the mt genome of the plague thrips, Thrips imaginis (Thysanoptera). This genome is circular, 15,407 bp long, and has many unusual features, including (1) rRNA genes inverted and distant from one another, (2) an extra gene for tRNA-Ser, (3) a tRNA-Val lacking a D-arm, (4) two pseudo-tRNA genes, (5) duplicate control regions, and (6) translocations and/or inversions of 24 of the 37 genes. The mechanism of rRNA gene transcription in T. imaginis may be different from that

Understanding predator-prey interactions at different developmental stages is crucial for improving biocontrol strategies against small, elusive pests such as thrips. The greenhouse thrips, Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis (Bouché) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a globally significant pest, with significant differences in susceptibility and nutritional value to predators across its developmental stages. This study conducted no-choice experiments, choice experiments, and food suitability tests of first- and second-instar green lacewings Mallada basalis (Walker) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) feeding on th

Thrips-infesting soybeans were considered of minor economic importance, but recent evidence of their ability to transmit a newly identified soybean virus, Soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV), has raised their profile as pests. Season-long surveys were conducted using suction traps to determine the effects of temperature and precipitation on the spatiotemporal patterns of three vector species of SVNV, Neohydatothrips variabilis (Beach) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) (soybean thrips), Frankliniella tritici (Fitch) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) (eastern flower thrips), and Frankliniella fusca (Hinds) (Thys

As a result of our field surveys in April and July 2025 in the Kim Bang Proposed Species and Habitat Conservation Area, we provide an extended morphological description of three syntopic anuran species, namely Microhyla heymonsi, M. mukhlesuri, and Occidozyga lingnanica based on newly collected specimens. In addition, we present data on the diet and trophic niche overlap of these syntopic anuran species. Using the stomach-flushing method, we analyzed stomach contents of 26 individuals of M. heymonsi, 42 individuals of M. mukhlesuri, and 48 individuals of O. lingnanica. We found 878 prey items,

BACKGROUND: Field control of pest thrips mainly relies on insecticides, but the toxicity of insecticides can vary among thrips species and populations. In this study, we examined the susceptibility of multiple field populations of two thrips pests, Frankliniella occidentalis, and Thrips palmi, that often co-occur on vegetables, to nine insecticides belonging to seven subgroups.
RESULTS: The highest level of variation in susceptibility among F. occidentalis populations was for spinetoram (73.92 fold difference between most resistant and most susceptible population), followed by three neonicoti

Putative mechanisms underlying spinosyn resistance have been identified in controlled studies on many species; however, mechanisms underlying field-evolved resistance and the development of a molecular diagnostic method for monitoring field resistance have lagged behind. Here, we examined levels of resistance of melon thrips, Thrips palmi Karny (Thysanoptera:Thripidae), to spinetoram as well as target site mutations in field populations across China to identify potential mechanisms and useful molecular markers for diagnostic and quantifying purposes. In resistant populations, we identified the

Florida is the second-highest producer of strawberries in the USA. Chilli thrips Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) have become a major pest in Florida strawberries following its establishment in the USA after 2005. Insecticide application is the leading management approach for S. dorsalis. However, this pest demonstrated the tendency to develop resistance to a broad range of active ingredients. Host-plant resistance (HPR) may contribute to the management of this pest, yet mechanisms of HPR, including antixenosis and antibiosis against S. dorsalis in strawberries, are not wel

BACKGROUND: Species displacement by the outcome of interspecific competition is of particular importance to pest management. Over the past decade, spinetoram has been extensively applied in control of the two closely related thrips Megalurothrips usitatus and Frankliniella intonsa worldwide, while whether its resistance is implicated in mediating interspecific interplay of the two thrips remains elusive to date.
RESULTS: Field population dynamics (from 2017 to 2019) demonstrated a trend toward displacement of F. intonsa by M. usitatus on cowpea crops, supporting an existing interspecific comp

BACKGROUND: Elevated CO2 can directly affect the toxicity of insecticides to insects and the physiological response of insects to insecticides. Frankliniella occidentalis and F. intonsa are highly destructive pests that target horticultural crops. Spinetoram is an effective pesticide against thrips. This study sought to explore the effect of elevated CO2 on efficacy of spinetoram against F. occidentalis and F. intonsa and effect of the spinetoram on activities of protective and detoxifying enzymes under elevated CO2 . Notably, these enzymes can be exploited in further studies to develop interv

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) causes a serious plant disease and is transmitted by specific thrips including the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis. The persistent and circulative virus transmission suggests an induction of immune defenses in the thrips. We investigated the immune responses of F. occidentalis to TSWV infection. Immunofluorescence assay demonstrated viral infection in the larval midguts at early stage and subsequent propagation to the salivary gland in adults. In the larval midgut, TSWV infection led to the release of DSP1, a damage-associated molecular patter

BACKGROUND: Thrips (order Thysanoptera) infestations of cotton seedlings result in plant injury, increasing the detrimental consequences of other challenges to production agriculture, such as abiotic stress or infestation by other pests. Using Frankliniella fusca as a thrips species of focus, we empirically developed a composite model of thrips phenology and cotton seedling susceptibility to predict site-specific infestation risk so that monitoring and other resources can be allocated efficiently, to optimize the timing of thrips control measures to maximize effectiveness, and to inform stakeh

BACKGROUND: Thrips Anaphothrips obscurus are one of the cosmopolitan major pests feeding on cereals and other grasses. In order to develop alternatives of chemical insecticides for thrips control, based on fumigant activity screening and evaluation of 22 essential oil (EO) compounds against the thrips, the binary interactions of methyl salicylate and carvacrol (MS-C) with high fumigant toxicity were studied systematically by bioassay and field trials.
RESULTS: The bioassay results showed that six in 22 EO compounds had high fumigant toxicity against both the second-instar nymphs and adults of

Pulses are vital to sustainable global food systems, supplying plant-based protein, minerals, and vitamins while improving soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation. Cultivated on ~99.26 million ha with ~99.06 million tonnes annual production, their demand is rising, particularly in Asia and Africa. Yet production stability is increasingly threatened by climate variability, expanding vector niches, and predominantly rain-fed cultivation systems, where viral diseases impose major yield losses. While begomovirus-induced yellow mosaic disease remains the most destructive in Asia, the th

BACKGROUND: Two consecutive field trials using a blend of entomopathogens in combination with a new chemistry insecticide were conducted to determine treatment effects on onion thrips (Thrips tabaci Lindeman) populations, crop damage, plant development, crop yield and impact on natural enemies. Products were tested in an onion cropping system and included the insect pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (isolate WG-11), an entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (strain VS) and the new-chemistry chemical insecticide spinetoram.
RESULTS: In all treatments, a significant decrease

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Invasive thrips, Thrips parvispinus Karny recently reported in India, causing a widespread severe infestation in more than 0.4 million ha of chilli (Capsicum annum L.) growing areas. This species is native to Thailand and most prevalent in other South East Asian countries. Large scale cultivation of the major host plants (chilli and papaya), and favourable climatic conditions in India and other countries similar to native range of Thrips parvispinus expected to favour its further spread and establishment to new areas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was unde

Frankliniella occidentalis, the western flower thrips, is one of most notorious pests on a variety of crops worldwide and many populations have high resistance to different types of insecticides. In order to determine the susceptibility of F. occidentalis to the insecticide pyridalyl in the field and to understand the potential mechanism of resistance, we conducted field monitoring of resistance and investigated cross-resistance, fitness cost, and synergism for the 75.8-fold pyridalyl-resistant strain (PY-R) established with a long-term successive laboratory selection. The results showed that

Western flower thrips (WFT) Frankliniella occidentalis cause extensive damage to crops either by direct feeding injury or by transmitting diseases. Current management strategies against this pest rely heavily on synthetic insecticides, leading to issues such as resistance development and environmental concerns. Several safer alternatives including RNA interference (RNAi), also referred to as post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS), are being extensively researched to develop species-specific molecular pesticides for the management of this pest. However, the success of RNAi depends on the se

The improvement and application of pest models to predict yield losses is still a challenge for the scientific community. However, pest models were targeted chiefly towards scheduling scouting or pesticide applications to deal with pest infestation. Thysanoptera (thrips) significantly impact the productivity of many economically important crops worldwide. Until now, no comprehensive study is available on the global distribution of pest thrips, as well as on the extent of cropland vulnerability worldwide. Further, nothing is known about the climate change impacts on these insects. Thus the pres
