Comparative study of mouthparts of four species of Culicoides from Tibet.

Mouthparts of four species of Culicoides from Tibet were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Photomicrographs were made of the mandible, labrum, hypopharynx, lacinia, and the sensory pit of the third palpal segment for each of the four species. Values for eighteen characters of five structures are presented graphically. Mean values for ten of the eighteen characters evaluated were significantly greater for C. circumscriptus and C. mamaensis than for C. maculatus and C. tibetensis. Photomicrographs revealed specific differences in camber and pitch of the fifth mandibular to

Reusing wasteroot of Rubia wallichiana dyeing from Monpa of Tibet in China.

Humans have dyed textiles and leather, colored food, and paint body parts using natural dyes throughout history. Natural dyes have suffered drastically due to recent socioeconomic changes and replacement with synthetic dye in the textile industry. Hence, it is urgent to study indigenous dye plants and dyeing craft in local communities to protect these resources' potential ecological, economic, and cultural values. In 11 Monpa villages of Mêdog County, South-east Tibet, China, we conducted field research to record the indigenous method of cloth dyeing using madder dye. An aqueous extract of the

[Epidemiological characteristics of canine Echinococcus infection in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China].

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is known as one of the highest endemic areas of echinococcosis. However, the dog infection rates of Echinococcus granulosus in the plateau regions were similar to other non-Tibetan areas with the high endemic, and most of the rates were below 40%. The infected dogs with E. multilocularis were ubiquitous in Ganzi Prefecture of Sichuan Province and Qinghai Province where many survey data were done and available, which was much different from those in non-Ti-betan areas where the geographical distribution of dogs infected with E. multilocularis was sporadic. The total in

County-level heat vulnerability of urban and rural residents in Tibet, China.

BACKGROUND: Tibet is especially vulnerable to climate change due to the relatively rapid rise of temperature over past decades. The effects on mortality and morbidity of extreme heat in Tibet have been examined in previous studies; no heat adaptation initiatives have yet been implemented. We estimated heat vulnerability of urban and rural populations in 73 Tibetan counties and identified potential areas for public health intervention and further research. METHODS: According to data availability and vulnerability factors identified previously in Tibet and elsewhere, we selected 10 variables re

Human cystic and alveolar echinococcosis in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), China.

Human cystic echinococcosis (CE) is known to be endemic in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), China; however, there is relatively little data from hospital records or community prevalence studies, and the situation regarding occurrence of human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is unclear. Here we review the available reports about human echinococcosis in the seven prefectures of TAR. In addition, two pilot studies by mass screening using ultrasound (with serology) were undertaken (2006/7) in Dangxiong County of Lhasa Prefecture (north central TAR) and Dingqing County of Changdu Prefecture (eastern

Selenium: a protective factor for Kaschin-Beck disease in Qing-Tibet Plateau.

There is a close relationship between selenium deficiency and Kaschin-Beck disease (KBD). Although the etiology of KBD is not known and selenium deficiency is not its actual cause, it is an important environmental risk factor. In particular, in the Qing-Tibet Plateau, a selenium-deficient region, the prevalence of KBD is serious and still increasing and continues to damage public health. By providing selenium to the population in appropriate amounts, and especially to children, KBD can be effectively controlled and prevented.

A new intermediate host of Echinococcus shiquicus in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China.

Echinococcosis is a severe parasitic zoonosis worldwide distribution, caused by the genus Echinococcus. One of its recently identified species, Echinococcus shiquicus, is believed to be endemic to the Qinghai-Tibet plateau in China. Research has confirmed that Tibetan foxes are the definitive hosts for E. shiquicus, while plateau pikas (Ochotona curzoniae) serve as intermediate hosts. In this study, cyst containing protoscolices was first observed in the lung of plateau zokor (Eospalax baileyi) in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gannan, Gansu Province, China. This observation was confirme
