A combination of motor and phonic tics is the hallmark of Tourette syndrome (TS). This complex neuropsychiatric disorder is often associated with psychiatric comorbidities such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The first step in management is to establish the diagnosis of TS, avoiding potential diagnostic confounders (such as compulsions, stereotypies, or habits). Once a diagnosis of TS is made, a discussion with the patient and family about the level of impairment and presence or absence of comorbidities will guide the decision and choice of treatm

Tourette disorder is a developmental neuropsychiatric condition characterized by vocal and motor tics that can range in severity from mild to disabling. It represents one end of a spectrum of tic disorders and is estimated to affect 0.5-0.7% of the population. Accumulated evidence supports a substantial genetic contribution to disease risk, but the identification of genetic variants that confer risk has been challenging. Positive findings in candidate gene association studies have not replicated, and genomewide association studies have not generated signals of genomewide significance, in large

This review summarizes animal models of Tourette syndrome (TS) and associated tic disorders that have been developed through pharmacological manipulation. These models provide a useful platform to explore the pathophysiology and the therapeutic interventions available for these disorders. The current pharmacological models, primarily using rodents and nonhuman primates, are classified in this review into two major categories depending on the methodology used for administration, that is, systemic and focal (intracerebral) injection protocols. The systemic protocol primarily targets monoamines s

Tic disorders, including Tourette syndrome, are an intriguing group of paroxysmal movement abnormalities that begin in childhood, have a fluctuating course, are capable of causing psychosocial and physical problems, and often improve by early adulthood. These disorders are frequently associated with a variety of comorbid problems whose negative effects may exceed those of tics. Therapy is strictly symptomatic and usually includes educational, behavioral, and a variety of pharmacological therapies. Although there is strong evidence supporting an inherited basis, the precise genetic abnormality

The aims of this study were to examine a non-English (Hebrew) version of a scale that measures the premonitory urge in children suffering from tic disorder, as well as examine the correlations of the urge with demographic and clinical aspects of Tourette Syndrome. Forty children and adolescents, suffering from tics participated in this study. They were assessed with the Premonitory Urge for Tics Scale (PUTS); the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS); the Childhood Version of the Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CYBOCS); the ADHD Rating Scale IV (Conners) Scale; the Screen for Child Anx

Tic disorders are stereotypic behaviours, more frequent than once believed, and therefore likely to be encountered by primary care physicians. Tics usually begin in childhood and are the clinical hallmark of Tourette Syndrome (TS), the most common cause of tics. TS is a relatively common neurobehavioural disorder with a spectrum of manifestations that wax and wane during its natural course. The pathophysiology of tics, at molecular and cellular level, is still unknown, whereas structural and functional neuroimaging studies have shown the involvement of the basal ganglia and related cortico-stria

BACKGROUND: To describe the rarely reported characteristics of pollakiuria in children with tic disorders (TD).
METHODS: During a period of one year, all patients visiting our Tourette Syndrome (TS) Clinic with TD were studied for presentation of pollakiuria.
RESULTS: We found that nine (1.9%) out of 467 children with TD had pollakiuria: 407 boys and 60 girls, with a mean age of 8.7 years. Of these nine children, there were eight boys and one girl, and their mean age was 7.4 years. Five had transient TD, one had chronic motor TD and the remaining three had TS. Their pollakiuria recovered wit

THE AIM OF THE WORK: Tic disorders are differentiated in their symptomatology and time of duration. Assessing the courses of tics can be crucial for more successful treatment. The aim of the study was to identify the egzogenic and endogenic causes of tic disorders.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The group of 20 children and adolescents, 6 girls and 14 boys, aged 4-16 years, with tic disorders were analysed. 8 of them were identified as having transient tics 6 chronic motor or vocal tics and 6 Tourette's syndrome. Twenty-six children diagnosed with chronic tic disorders (18 with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and 8 with chronic motor tic disorder) were studied for unexplained physical complaints. Compared to normal controls, an excess of somatic complaints was found in the tic disorders group; this was similar to an excess of somatic complaints in a mixed psychiatric clinic group. Medication produced no significant effect on somatic complaints for patients in the tic and psychiatric clinic groups. Within the tic disorders group, no significant correlation was found between the increased somatic complain

Common otolaryngologic symptoms such as coughing and sneezing may not be manifestations of disease of the upper respiratory tract. Two cases are reported in which these symptoms were the first evidence of tic-like disorders. A short discussion of one such disorder, Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome, is presented. The entity of paroxysmal sneezing is also mentioned. It is pointed out that, in the absence of otolaryngologic disease, these disorders may first present to an otolaryngologist for diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Tics are the hallmark of Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic tic disorders (CTD). Although typically involving the face, especially at onset, tics may involve any muscle under voluntary control, including axial muscles of the neck (causing head movements), shoulders and trunk (thorax and abdomen). We aimed to characterize these tics and provide a clinical frame for their associations and complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed video recordings and clinical history of 196 patients with TS or CTD according to DSM-5.
RESULTS: Any axial tic was identified in 75% of patients.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are common in and may affect the severity of chronic tic disorder (CTD). We assessed anxiety phenotype in youth with CTD and evaluated for relationships among anxiety, tics, and related symptoms.
METHODS: Participants ages 6-17 years with a diagnosis of CTD were enrolled from clinic into a cross-sectional study. Participants and one parent were interviewed by a psychology study team member and a neurology study team member at separate visits. Anxiety disorder presence was determined by the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule Child/Parent Version (ADIS-IV). Anxie

Infectious pathogens may represent an environmental risk factor for chronic tic disorders (CTD). This cross-sectional study aimed to determine whether Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) IgG positivity is associated with the presence or severity of tics. We compared M. pneumoniae IgG positivity across three groups: children and adolescents (3-16 years) with CTD (CTD group; n = 302); siblings (3-10 years) of people with CTD who developed tics within a seven-year follow-up period (tic onset group; n = 51); siblings (4-10 years) who did not develop tics within the study period and were ≥10-year

This article is the first of four articles designed to explore the complex interrelationship between Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD); Obsessive compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRD) and Tic Disorders/Tourette's Syndrome (TD/TS). We begin with an overview TD/TS and follow-up with reviews of OCRD and ASD. The final article in this series represents a synthesis of the neurobiological and genetic markers shared by patients presenting with all three syndromes. The goal is to describe the complex endophenotype of these patients in an effort to better define gene markers that underlie these heterog

Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in patients with tic disorders and Tourette syndrome, with up to 80% of patients experiencing sleep difficulties. Insomnia is notably present, and pediatric patients often experience parasomnias, including sleepwalking and night terrors. Disruptions in circadian rhythms are also reported, with a pronounced evening chronotype. Concurrently, patients may also suffer from sleep-related movement disorders, and tics are reported to often persist during sleep, further contributing to significant sleep fragmentation. The presence of comorbid attention-deficit h

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple motor tics and at least one vocal tic lasting for more than a year. It is a complex, polygenic, and multifactorial disorder. In this chapter, we briefly discuss the early genetic studies on TS, and then provide a detailed overview of current efforts to uncover common and rare variants contributing to TS susceptibility. We also summarize pathway analyses which combine information from multiple loci to identify converging cellular processes and pathways associated with TS pathogenesis. Since TS is h

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize and update information on the course of tic disorders from childhood through later life.
RECENT FINDINGS: Tics tend to improve substantially over the first year after they appear. However, contrary to widespread opinion, tics usually last longer than one year, though usually at minimal severity. Tics often wane to clinical insignificance over the teen years, possibly resurging occasionally over the lifespan. However, in an important minority of patients, tics remain clinically relevant throughout life. Tics rarely first come to clinical attention later in adult

INTRODUCTION: Although circumstantial evidence suggests children with tic disorders (TD) experience challenges in handwriting which may be attributed to their tics, few studies have systematically investigated handwriting performance among children with TD. This study examined the relationship between handwriting deficits and TD using a causal comparative research design.
METHODS: Thirty-four children with TD completed the Test of Handwriting Skills-Revised (THS-R). The overall percentile ranks of the THS-R were analysed to determine if children with TD have lower scores compared to the test'

BACKGROUND: This study examined the incidence and clinical correlates of suicidal ideation (SI) in youth with tic disorders (TD). The independent contribution of tics, anxiety, depressive and externalizing symptoms on SI severity in youth with TD was assessed.
METHOD: Participants were 75 treatment-seeking youth with a TD (N=75) aged 6-18. Participants completed diagnostic assessments, clinician-ratings, self- and parent-report measures of emotional functioning and the presence and/or severity of suicidal ideation.
RESULTS: Based on youth-report, 61% of youth endorsed at least some symptoms
